Given the fever pitch that is the current tone of American politics regarding "all the bad things our enemies are doing to us", could this entire case be explained as mass hysteria?
Until there is real evidence that The Americans are getting targeted by Their Enemies in this high technology game, I think the only sane thing to do is conclude that there is some collective madness going on here, especially among the "intelligence community", which never seems to pass an opportunity to extend its powers at every incursion, imagined or otherwise - and which also, by the way, seems to be weathering inspection 'by their own people' in ways that would seem more appropriate for kindergarten.
America today seems all too willing to find reasons for its aggressive domination, militarily, culturally, and economically, of 'lesser nations' - are these "attacks" just another case of Americans, whining about not being able to play with their toys?
