It also raises an interesting moral issue which might be a good plot for a novel:
The plan to introduce the mosquitoes runs into roadblocks, mainly from people who see all GMOs as inherently evil and utterly terrible, as a matter of basic dogma. A few of the scientists on the team developing these mosquitoes realize that those roadblocks are not going to go away, regardless of how well-argued the case in favor of the mosquitoes is and how many lives are being lost in the Third World, far from any anti-GMO activists. (See also: Golden rice, which could be curing blindness were it not for implacable opposition to GMO food.) The scientists proceed to release the modified mosquitoes into the wild, saving a lot of Third Worlders and making First Worlder anti-GMO activists go nuclear.
