Well, if what the author of the op-ed is saying is true, they are one of the few people holding back the worst of Trump's behavior from destroying this country.

Unmasking that person will surely make them unable to continue doing so.

That assumes that the op-ed is completely true and that the strategy being described (resisting the worst impulses of a dangerously inept leader from inside the administration) is the correct one, but it's not a hard argument to make under those assumptions at least.

If the content of the article is true, why did the author have it published in the New York Times?

He/she is a high-ranking republican starting the spin machine for the inevitable post-Trump era. If and when Trump gets the boot they can say "I, and such and such, were there the whole time saving the country from Trump's worst impulses. He's a Republican in name only, but we're the real deal. Trust us".

My betting money is on the VP, but it doesn't matter who wrote it. This narrative will be used to defend complicit Republicans in the event Trump goes down.

These people aren't protecting the country, if you believe that.

They are enabling a dangerous man to continue in one of the most powerful offices on the planet, because they refuse to stand up and tell the truth about the matter.

You can't actually impeach Trump from being incompetent. The people voted him in, and unless Trump is found to have commited a crime in winning the presidency, there really isn't anything that can be done by White House employees.

if he's actually deranged and incompetent to the point of being unable to handle the presidency they have the option of the 25th amendment.

But they obviously do not actually believe that.

Or they believe that the fallout from trying to go that route will be worse than the fallout from letting Trump continue but trying to contain him as best as possible.
