This railway pattern sounds exactly like a pipe/filter pattern to me. What would you say is the difference between the two?

In an actual pipe and filter, the filter is directly connected to the next filter, there is no caller it returns a result to.

In railway pattern, we return values to callers, which then call the next function in turn.
