They are optimizing completely different metrics than you do. They want crème de la crème developers that are perfectly trained not to think about certain classes of problems and waste time there but instantly come with acceptable answers, immediately recognizing the structure of the problem and having the ability to faultlessly transform it into a piece of code without a debugger. It allows the training from the best universities to shine.
The problem is when everybody starts doing the same, but without the prestige, salary, equity and lifestyle that Google provides.
