The only reason you can't buy a belt fed machine gun is because it's a machine gun. It has nothing to do with the magazine, and survived a legal challenge because all the pre-existing firearms that matched that definition were grandfathered in (which coincidentally, is why you can still purchase a fully automatic M4 for something like $30,000).
