To be fair, it was normal at that point in history at many parts of the world to have multiple wives (or one wife + multiple concubines).

That and the prophet was actually monogamous for 25 years (until his first wife who was 15 years older than him passed away).

Every religious scripture has many things that are barbaric by modern standards. This comment really is out of place.

I believe the reason for this was to protect the women. Not sure though.
