Here's a link to the character if someone wants to test it themselves https://pastebin.com/9Tr8ytTr

Wow, that even crashes Safari on my Mac.

And if it get's in your history, it'll crash every time the character shows up again. I ended up having to delete the entry manually:

  $ sqlite3 ~/Library/Safari/History.db
  SQLite version 3.19.3 2017-06-27 16:40:08
  Enter ".help" for usage hints.
  sqlite> delete from history_items where url = "https://pastebin.com/9Tr8ytTr";

Thanks!

Not crashing mine, using OSX 10.13.3, Safari 11.0.3

Try copy and pasting the character in your address bar.

Ohhh nice. Yep, definitely crashed Safari on OSX 10.13.3 when the character is in the address bar. Firefox seems fine and is my daily driver, fortunately

Firefox Developer Edition 59.0b9 here on latest High Sierra. Opening the link doesn't crash anything, but highlighting the paste did. I would have expected the tab at most to crash, but it took out the whole browser

Also crashed Chromium on my Mac.

also crashed firefox on mac and chrome somebody should just paste them here in the comments seeing the % of people here who run macos

HN is no fun allowed zone - it strips all unicode.

What about https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16388213

本気ですか？

Not all Unicode. Ąėīû displays back to me as written.

I sent this link to my phone and the character is in the meta-title, which then crashed my phone. It works!

Now how to fix it...

Option 1:

* Have someone else send you a message

* Click the notification and it'll open their message

* Navigate back and delete the corrupting message

Option 2:

* Sign up for the ios beta program (free) https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/ and install the latest beta which isn't impacted.

Thank you!! I tried deleting the conversations through the settings and no luck. Will try these now

For WhatsApp deleting the conversation through WhatsApp Web seemed to fix it.

tried option 1, did not work. app crashes when navigating back :(

make sure to get enough messages to push it out of the preview. I think that's how it worked for me anyways.

will give it a shot. thanks

That’s weird using safari on iOS 11.2.5 it didn’t crash the first time but now can’t open the pastbin link !

Edit: it’s random (it show in the 3D Touch to preview) https://imgur.com/a/xb5XV

Doesn't crash iOS 10.3 (although it doesn't seem to render correctly either)

Would be really nice if Apple would stop treating its beta software as a final release.

Same over here. Didn't crash when emailed through Gmail to a Mac running an outdated version of OSX. But also didn't render correctly.

Looks like it rendered as two characters instead on one

Do you mind trying to open the link again ?

Just did. Still no crash.

iTerm2 crashes if that character is echoed to the terminal. To reproduce, make a file containing the character and then `cat` it.

Very nasty (reported upstream.)

Original iPad here running iOS 9.3.5. Everything works as expected. I can't seem to crash anything with this string. Oh well, I guess that's the benefit of not upgrading, ever.

It doesn’t crash SublimeText and LibreOffice under macOS but seemingly all the other applications (Browsers, Terminal, TextEdit, …)

Crashed Chrome as well.

If if its the iPhone you're talking about. Chrome is a "wrapper" around Safari's web engine.

It's crashes Chrome on MacOS
