We build upon so much open souce software - Linux, GNU, compilers, editors, servers, and hundreds of libraries.
I use KDE on Ubuntu, and on the rare occasion that it is lacking, a bug report or a patch helps the whole community. All the users, in Ubuntu's statistics, help the KDE developers feel they're doing something worthwhile.
Running Windows and perhaps improving tooling on Windows helps Microsoft, something I refuse to do.
(Equally, I will correct Open Street Map, but not Google Maps.)
