Have you checked out the cutter GUI (https://github.com/radareorg/cutter)? I found it helped a bit for me.

Try ired from same author; scriptable hex editor than can, among other things, search hex or ascii strings and output offsets; can read input and commands from stdin.

What's `hd` in this context?

It's hexdump. It outputs a hexdump alongside ASCII rendering (when possible) of a file.

In Debian it's in the `bsdmainutils` package.

I found it very useful for doing the initial guess work about the binary printer control language I was looking at.
