I agree with the first sentence entirely. The second sentence is not so hot, disabusing people of their misconceptions and reinforcing their logical positions is absolutely something that should be considered a public good.

This is the root of the sunlight is the best disinfectant argument; that no matter how offensive or absurd the position presented, at least it has the opportunity to be subject to peer review.
