If I am not mistaken, this is plaintext email. Traditionally, email had bold, /italics/ and _underline_. Markdown just extends on this. The danger is, however, that people continue to create their own Markdown extensions and we end up with emails, that are full with those "control-codes", which makes them ugly for anyone, not having a transformer in their email-client (aka: those, who read the plaintext)
