I waited for an invitation for 6 weeks and when I finally got it, I was required to login via twitter or facebook. I dropped it right then and there.

That seems like a hassle to me and will make me significantly less likely to sign up for anything, but maybe most people really don't care.
Everyone's OpenID is a bit different and I ended up with a lowest common denominator approach which was suboptimal in my opinion.
One thing to note is that after you login, you can disconnect your twitter and/or facebook account. I disconnected FB.
Even if you don't plan to join, I would recommend the HN crowd to check out some of the questions under startups -- excellent info.
