umm so that other people wouldn't waste their time. I often read comments for longer articles first and if the top rated comments all agree its not worth reading I won't.

Anyways, HN is a place where both sides should be commented on. I certainly do not read HN hoping that the only people who comment are making congratulatory remarks on everything.
