Looking at this from a technological perspective, it reminds me of the shift from categorization to tagging in information categorization.
Instead of being 'Male or female', or 'Gay or straight', now there are a range of different adjectives people can apply to themselves (cis/trans, gay/straight, male/female, a/bi/homo/pansexual, a/bi/homo/panromantic, and so on).
Rather than having to fit into one of two boxes, people who cross those boundaries in one way or another can specify that specifically. I think a lot of the confusion a lot of people have these days with regards to gender and identity politics is the proliferation of new terminology to describe the wide variations in preferences and identities.
