I figure that's a more popular app among HN crowd than most places, and losing it is really painful.

I have used it on past releases (El Cap, Yosemite, etc) and it has always been a great source for tracking the software I care about as a developer.
EDIT: I read the comments at above issue; the version for MacOS Sierra is being developed as "Karabiner-Elements" [1]
And you can make a donation to the author here[2].

I mapped my Caps Lock to escape, but I just realized that it's not by Karabiner, and I need Seil from the same author to do it.

Maybe other people can chime in on their uses, since I'm not the best to fully answer your question.
With Karabiner that's an issue of a single tick.
It's not currently supported by Karabiner-Elements; I haven't found a way to do this on macOS Sierra yet.
I've postponed the Sierra upgrade on my main dev box until this is sorted out.
I use it for putting # on the § key, and it's as simple as:
{
"\U00a7" = (
"insertText:",
"#"
);
}
in that file. YMMV on >capitan though.
