I don't think this is going to be mainstream very soon because these multi rotors can only fly for a few minutes.

Right now batteries are way too heavy. And combustion engines can't alter speed that quick.

Yes, batteries don't have the energy density of petrol yet, but they're improving. Also, hybrids are an option, with a combustion engine (running at optimal speed throughout) driving a generator recharging a battery - best of both worlds, potentially.

What of fuel cell vehicles or series hybrids? You'd still have electric motors, but with a more potent power source.
