The theft here is for the purpose of freeing up science around the world instead of it being locked away by people who didn't even contribute to the science. In many cases, the science is publicly funded.
So freeing this information is not petty, in many ways it's selfless and honorable if you look at what can be done with it. A 'petty' thief would be somebody who rips out some of the copper from your home creating thousands in damage just to make a measly $10 from it, which could have been easily earned, possibly for less work and less time. That's selfish and petty.
