If jheriko had phrased their comment more constructively, there would likely be no issue.
I wouldn't say the article was particularly substantive, but by HN's standards the comment wasn't fine. It was (a) fluff, (b) generic, (c) ideological, (d) inflammatory, and (e) by an account that has done this before.
However, this article isn't that. Out of the 13 questions here, only 1 was about gender and how gender affected her experience as a scientist. Any less and you would be arguing that that her gender wasn't relevant to her life at all, which is a pretty tenuous position to take.
I have to ask, did you read the article? It was a pretty good article and worth re-reading if all you got from it was "rah rah women rah rah". I particularly liked the question "Why do you love trees?".
My female friends see themselves as people, not genders. I don't talk to them as women and it's fantastic: the conversations are very transparent. I rarely get along with a woman who defines herself by her gender or a guy who defines himself by his gender. It saddens me that the overwhelming majority of people can not look past their gender. Even HN with extensive open mindedness has many people who are incapable of seeing themselves past their own gender.
I do happen to disagree with her on a few key points, but I do think the discussion is important.
You seem to have posted this on the wrong article, because it appears that the interviewee agrees with you.
Personally, I feel like I am the worst kind of people. I remember being in Texas about nine years back talking to some young women who were passionately anti-choice (or pro-life as they call themselves) and I found myself thinking "but you're a woman". I don't I said anything that revealed my thought process. It feels like it should be easy, right? Just treat individuals as individuals and don't stereotype. Well, easier said than done in my case. Similarly with black people. Just because someone is black and American does not mean they have to be in favor of reparations. Just because someone is a woman does not mean they have to be a feminist. I remind myself of this fact every so often and I realize I am a bad person. However, worse than me are the people who dare tell others they are wrong and don't know what is best for them because of their ideas or choices.
Being open-minded is not something that you accomplish in one step. It takes constant effort to try to see something from different perspectives. Sometimes you end up changing your mind; or, on account of how nice you are and how well you explain your side, you may end up changing theirs.
It's good that you're at least trying to improve yourself. That means you're already doing better than many people out there.
