zzzeek··on Using AI to negotiate a $195k hospital bill down to $33k
what are the other proposals? I like everyone else would love the option.

though at the moment I'm super happy DJT does not control my healthcare.

zzzeek··on Using AI to negotiate a $195k hospital bill down to $33k
not sure why you're getting downmodded. People will say M4A ("medicare for all") polls at super high levels, and they're right, it does. But poll those same people telling them "would you favor that your employer-based healthcare would be rescinded and you would instead get healthcare from a new government controlled plan, where there would be no other options", which is the assumption M4A's viability is based on, and that poll turns right upside down.

there's a very basic reason, you really don't know what it could be?
zzzeek··on US axes website for reporting human rights abuses by US-armed foreign forces
a giant 147000 square mile space like Montana with 1.1 M people, 2.8% the size of California's population, gets 2 Senators regardless.

That is, the Senate gives representation to empty land.

That's pretty structural !

zzzeek··on Police Break Up Lego Theft Ring
how about reporting on Kristy Noem stealing $172M from every American so she can have *two* luxury private jets? Thats....28666 stolen-lego rings worth.

im sure NYT reported on that as well, couched in typical "questions arise...." format which they reserve for those criminals whose crimes are so massive and so completely blatant, they couldn't possibly call them what they are. Those would be facts that their readers wouldn't accept. But a Latino man running a shoplifting ring, they'll nod their heads and dream of more Alligator Alcatrazes for "the illegals".

zzzeek··on Replacement.ai
> I kind of get it, but at the same time...isn't "we made a machine to do something that people used to do" basically the entire history of of technology?

this is not about machines. machines are built for a purpose. who is "building" them for what "purpose" ?

if you look at every actual real world human referenced in this website, they all have something in common. which is that they're billionaires.

this is a website about billionaires and their personal agendas.

zzzeek··on Ultrasound is ushering a new era of surgery-free cancer treatment
absoultely but I am in no hurry and I would like it to be Very Boring and Ordinary For My Particular Condition before I go anywhere near it
zzzeek··on Ultrasound is ushering a new era of surgery-free cancer treatment
I've got a node in my thyroid that can reasonably only be removed chemically, which has risks of blowing out my whole thyroid. ultrasound treatment is now available for it, however have been going to my endocrinologist every four months for a bloodwork checkup (because I need to take thyroid-suppressing drugs until the node can be removed) and am still waiting for him to have heard about this treatment outside of my own telling him so (even though his larger medical organization, NYU, offers it, it still seems to not be routine within his practice).
zzzeek··on Tennessee man arrested, accused of threatening a shooting, after posting meme
i live in a town full of Republicans. Some are more soft spoken than others, but to claim that any of them are not MAGA (which would mean they actually did not vote for Trump) is simply ridiculous. the "non-MAGA republican" is basically a few hundred famous podcast hosts who were ejected from the power they had under the Bush regime. That's pretty much it.
zzzeek··on Django: One ORM to rule all databases
what's the purpose of this blog post?

"My goal is to help you see quickly where each database works well and where it has some limits. I also hope this can be useful for anyone who wants to improve Django, or just understand it better."

OK, then I look at the feature matrix and see a lot of obvious errors, then I see:

"The data in the table below is entirely fictional and intentionally provided only for example! I included these features just to show what the final matrix could look like, to help start a discussion in the community. Do not use them for any real analysis or decisions."

OK...so....we'll come back when you've written it? What are we looking at?

why do we need to do that? Which of the two political parties in the US is known as "conservative"? What does that party look like now? What policies are being pursued by that party's elected officials, and how much do they differ in concept from what that same party was doing ten years ago, twenty years ago, fifty years ago? The Southern Strategy, Reagan's speech at Neshoba county fair, "Starve the Beast", "Brownie you're doing a heckuva job", you can draw a straight line all the way through to today.

we're living in the utter pinnacle of unfettered conservatism today.

kind to people....who he was speaking to directly in person? or making social media references while they were not present (or adding them to dox lists so they could be harassed for years with death threats [1]) ? This is the key difference of course. It's also a really basic technique of horrible people to come off as very empathetic and friendly in person under specific circumstances so people are fooled in exactly this way, giving them full leeway to do horrible things elsewhere (such as maintaining dox lists to terrorize people into submission, or referring to women of color as having lesser "brain processing power" - e.g. unfiltered racism [2]....oh or insisting that children should be forced to watch executions [3]).

zzzeek··on Hackers leak Qantas data on 5M customers after ransom deadline passes
scam call you with further fake extortions like "I'm in jail mom you need to bail me out!" since they have birthdates they can target older people for this. my mom has received at least four of these calls, since I always get the "ARE YOU OK? WAS THAT A SCAM?" phone call afterwards. the first time it happened, they were about to go to the bank to wire money when dad said, "let's try calling his cell!"

we'd like to think these scams are stupid but unfortunately they work

zzzeek··on Show HN: Recall: Give Claude memory with Redis-backed persistent context
Yeah this is what I do, you want the knowledge in md files , but currently you don't want to stuff up the context with everything you know every time. I may be wrong here but my impression is the way that "context" is special and very limited in size vs "things the LLM is trained on" is still an unsolved problem getting AI to act like an "assistant" , AFAICT.
zzzeek··on America is now one big bet on AI
> That leaves us with only 2 possibilities - AI either replaces a significant part of the workforce or it does not. If it does not, the bubble bursts and the economy crashes. If it does, the economy still crashes because consumer spending is 70% of GDP and if the majority of the population becomes unemployed

close, but you see, part of the plan is also that immigration is basically shut off. so the majority of the population laid off from their office jobs will have plenty of work to do in the fields and food processing plants if they want to eat.

zzzeek··on A simple habit that saves my evenings
> A feeling of incompleteness will motivate you to come bac

Yeah this is exactly it but I cannot relax or sleep or anything when I have a bad case of that "incomplete" feeling. So I try not to get too embedded in code at all these days (I'm old and dont work for crazy startups anymore). But got pretty coded up this week and was all grumpy last night in one of those "just 20 minutes more" situations (which yes kept me coding til about midnight).

zzzeek··on [dead]
well Sam wouldn't just pick up a box 5 feet from a security guard and not even try to stuff it in his bag, and the doors wouldn't be 20 feet away from a shelf full of expensive stuff without any detectors or anything either. Obviously nobody would ever make a slightly more convincing scenario than this so there's no problem!
zzzeek··on EPA tells some scientists to stop publishing studies
> Can somebody explain the psychology behind these beliefs? I'm pretty sure they know how coal is mined. They must surely have heard about the black lung disease and COPD.

Of course they have? I'm sure you've seen pictures of miners back in the 19th century covered in soot? Why would the wealthy and powerful care about people who aren't them? You can't assume that everyone everywhere thinks "powerless people suffering and dying is wrong", that's quite demonstrably false. It might even be a plurality of people on earth who could not care less about the suffering of those outside of their immediate family and friends.

> I'm looking for an answer that doesn't assume that they're stupid or insane.

they just dont care! Why assume that people who ran for political office actually care about the welfare of others?

if the question is "why do this coal stuff when it's also unnecessary", well that gets into another MAGA value which is "dominance". That is, making people suffer and accept things that are horrible is also a big power play. Just watch any Game of Thrones episode for examples.

zzzeek··on EPA tells some scientists to stop publishing studies
we had a group like that called ACORN, and they worked to make sure as many people as possible were registered to vote. Being able to vote is popular and not particularly partisan. Somehow that group doesn't exist anymore! so strange
zzzeek··on Why I gave the world wide web away for free
Hypertext systems precede the web, I was using hypertext documents on CompuServe in the late 80s. It's hard to disagree given what was available at the time that putting the hypertext documents on another kind of network was a natural progression.
zzzeek··on The Theatre of Pull Requests and Code Review
I disagree with everything you wrote here. Prs must absolutely limit their scope both in terms of length as well as what they accomplish (e.g. don't do unrelated refactorings in a pr delivering something else), large features must absolutely be broken into individual commits if not individual PRs, I definitely read each one and each one definitely has to complete and pass tests 100%, else they are leaking details into the next or that would "fix" the problem. This is also absolutely nothing like "forcing TDD" in people and these are all practices that junior devs should absolutely be doing since it will help them to think about code, change and maintainability a ton.
zzzeek··on Python on the Edge: Fast, sandboxed, and powered by WebAssembly
