zwog··on Adblocking people and non-adblocking people experience a different web
I hate auto-playing videos. Several news websites in Germany embed an auto-playing video in a news article. Often these videos have nothing to do with the article. And then there are some that even turn into a pop-up player when you scroll down.

What's the best way to block these videos (in Chromium)? I wouldn't mind a solution where videos are completely blocked with a whitelist, since I rarely consume videos except on dedicated video sites (e.g Youtube).

zwog··on Show HN: Web page that parses and explains the label on a bike tire
Not to forget: 29" wheels have the same rim diameter as 28" wheels used in road bikes (622mm). Obviously.

(The reason: mountain bikes use lager tires than road bikes, so the complete wheel is larger )

zwog··on Ask HN: Where are you going to find long-form content online these days?
I like aeon.co - a collection of essays, thinkpieces and articles about a wide range of topics
zwog··on Firefox 94 advertises VPN in new private browsing tabs
> > pushed me ever closer to just giving up and going to Chrome, where at least they exploit me in predictable ways.

> Chrome is worse, and the ways are much more intrusive. They aren't even predictable. If people keep attacking Firefox like that, there won't be any choice but Chromium/Google, and then it will get even worse.

I understand where they're coming from: With Chrome I don't see those ads. They are probably exploiting my data, but I don't see ads that come from the browser. Firefox on the other hand shoves the ads right under my nose.

I am out of the loop: what did Mozilla to Firefox on Android?

As far as I know it's the only browser for Android that supports the uBlock addon, that's why it is my go-to browser.

zwog··on Ask HN: Can you please add transcription to vocal messages in messaging apps?
There are several Telegram bots for this. But of course very questionable in terms of privacy. I had the idea to write one myself, I found an open source project to host it myself, but I don't remember the name.

Fortunately, the voice messages have largely stopped with my contacts, so I didn't pursue it any furth

zwog··on [dead]
That's a pretty ignorant statement. Facebook and its services, especially Whatsapp, are the most widespread form of communication in many countries. Particularly in poor/developing countries, hardly anything else is used because mobile Internet is available cheaply, unlike voice services and SMS. Whatsapp is indispensable there.

See https://www.statista.com/statistics/291540/mobile-internet-u... for example.

zwog··on Young, Dumb, and Broke: Why Outdoorsy Types Suck at Money
You really don't need expensive gear. My first long distance hike was 150km through scotland (West Highland Way) and I spent about 80€ for a pair of used hiking boots. The rest was borrowed from friends and I've used my family's old camping tent. Sure, I could have saved about 3kg if I had bought newer, lighter gear. Maybe I would have made fewer stops, maybe I would have been a day faster or even two. But why, the sole idea behind the trip was to walk outside.

On my first day I met another solo hiker and he was kind of a gearhead - or showboat - because most of the time he talked about how light his gear is and what functions it has and apparently it was most important to him that I know how expensive it all was.

Same with bikes: if your goal is to ride a bike almost every bike that fits to the person riding it and us technically in good condition works.

zwog··on The 'Fuck You' Pattern
I literally can't open Twitter links on my phone (Firefox as browser). It always says "something went wrong" and reloading a bunch of times doesn't help either. If I use the same link on Desktop (or change my phone browser's user agent) it works. I think its a fuck you pattern to get me to install the app.
zwog··on A teenager's guide to avoiding actual work
I have a kind of similar story when I started studying in the late 2000s years. There was a company that had a specialized and really expensive measurement device. But the vendor went out of service. They changed part of their system but kept the measurement device only to find out it could not talk to the new system because the file system of the data was proprietary to the measurement device.

I got a student job at that company and one of my first tasks (and that of several students before me) was to open measurement results on the device and type them into excel spreadsheets. I did this for an hour or so until I became totally bored so I started to tinker around. The measurement device had it's own PC that booted Windows (I think it was 95 or 98) and autostarted their software in full screen/some sort of . This was easy to bypass via the task manager and running explorer.exe. I found out that the proprietary file format was simplay an MS Access file with a different extension. I tried to open it, but the file was password protected. At this time I had little to none experience with programming or anything else that was "low level" computer stuff, but I occasionally stumbled about writeups about hacks and exploits and skimmed over them. So I was pretty sure that there had to be a hardcoded password somewhere. I started to open every file I could in a text editor with no luck. Then I got a hex editor and opened the binaries and finally, in a dll there was a password. The next few days at this job I spent teaching myself enough Python to read the Access files and write the contents into an Excel file.

This worked and I used the free time to study/eat/sleep while getting paid for it but then one of my supervisors found out that I wasn't doing anything but still got results and wondered how I did it. He immediately put me onto another problem they had, thus starting my career as a software engineer.

zwog··on Towards an HD44780-Based Video Mode
Amazing. HD47780 displays are not only commercially ubiquitous, they were used everywhere when casemodding was still a thing. But so far, hardly anyone seems to have thought to exploit the possibilities.

zwog··on Show HN: A social platform with music in focus. Download the app
The frontpage fails to inform me what this app acutally does. As far I can tell this is an app that lets be listen to a synchronized spotify session and lets me chat with people in this session?

Who or what are my "idols"? In which way am I able to interact with them?

I'd like less dancing people, less buzzwords, less flashy animations but more information on page.

And why does the app need all those permissions?

zwog··on Changes to LastPass Free
My problem with passwordstore is that it's just not convenient to add passwords (via browser).

With Bitwarden or KeepassXC the extension offers to store the login data when I sign up or use one login for a first time.

With pass i have to do it manually which isn't hard or does take long, but it's still additional work.

I ended up using KeepassXc with keepmenu[0] as a script for roffi/demnu

zwog··on Don't Offer a Free Plan
I'm not on board with this. It highly depends on the type of software or service you offer. Anecdotal example: I've used a lot of "free for students" or "free for personal use" software during my university time and switched a lot until I found the product that was best for me. When I started working I wanted to use the same product because I was used to it. That's why the company I worked for payed several thousand Euros for JetBrains IDEs for example and I even have a personal license for freelance work.

Regarding the argument that free users don't convert: this does not mean the would have bought the product when there was no free plan. Maybe the product is not good enough, maybe it does not integrate in to the user's workflow, maybe they tried and moved on.

And if I offer a free plan people have to apply for, what happens if I spend more time reviewing those applications as I had to "support" users on the totally free plan?

If you offer a free plan: clearly state there is no official. Maybe offer a public forum where users can help each other. You'll probably find users using your product in a way you had not thought of and use this to advance your product.

If you don't offer a free plan, have a long enough trial period and totally consider this:

> Bonus points if you don't require payment details, as this may increase the friction of an employee of a larger business from trying it out without approval.

In my company I simply can't give payment details without going to the whole way via department head and accounting department which usually takes a couple of days and is an annoying hassle. And privately am I extremely reluctant to give my payment data for a trial. I don't know how save it is, I don't know how easy it is to cancel my trial subscription and so on. Too many scams out there, can't be cautious enough.

zwog··on People Keeping BlackBerry Alive
I have used a lot of smartphones with keyboards in the last 20 years or so. I think it started with a Palm Treo 600[0] and on top of my head I've used plenty of others (in not the right order): HTC Blue Angel[1], Sierra Wireless Voq[2], Nokia Communicator E90[3], Motorola Milestone[4], Motorola Droid 4[5] (where I had to solder the SIM-Card into the phone to use it in Europe), Nokia E71[6] Nokia E75[7], Nokia N900[8] (running Debian on some point), BlackBerry Curve[9], BlackBerry Bold[10], BlackBerry Q5[11], HTC Dream[12] and I probably even forgot some.

I really loved the latest Nokia pones with Symbian S60 as long as it worked. Working browser (Opera Mini), GPS navigation, Emails, Calendar and Contact syncing (via ActiveX I think) and everything with a week long stand-by time.

I would love a recent Android phone with a small form factor, full QWERTZ keyboard (preferabbaly slide-out) and decent camera. But I think the BlackBerry Key2 is the most recent smartphone with a physical keyboard and unfortunately it doesn't get any software updates. Right now I just hate typing on my phone and most of the time I wait until I am at a computer before I respond to any texts or mails I get on my phone.

I don't know if this is only with music hardware or with 'professional' hardware in general, but yeah you get a lot of schematics and such.

While I was at University I made some money by repairing DJ-hardware. Controllers, CD-Players and Turntables. There things are often expensive, but they are quite easy to repair because there are detailed service manuals available. Not on the official sites, though.
