zucked··on Home Depot Finds DIY Success with Vector Search
It's a borked landing page, I suspect. Go up a product level: https://www.homedepot.com/b/Doors-Windows-Garage-Door-Opener...

Click on "Belt Drive" among the Opener Types. Same result. Not terribly related to the topic at hand, but its definitely a gripe I have the the HD website sometimes works great and sometimes is terribly unhelpful.

zucked··on Home Depot Finds DIY Success with Vector Search
Home Depot does some things right and some things so poorly I wonder if it's intentional.

Here's one I ran into just yesterday. I wanted to know the ballpark cost of a belt-driven garage door opener. So I google "home depot belt drive garage door opener". Landed on this page: https://www.homedepot.com/b/Doors-Windows-Garage-Door-Opener...

So... where's the garage door openers? I know you carry them. No amount of modification of the search options surfaces any belt-driven garage door openers. Thinking I was crazy, I went up a category to "Garage Door Openers" and clicked the "Belt Drive" category at the top. Same result.

WTH?

I will say that the accurate listing of item location in the store has saved me hours and hours of wandering and even if I can't find the specific item I'm looking for (see above) I can look up generic garage door openers and find what aisle it's likely to be in.

zucked··on Russian Bomber HF Activity, Amateur Radio / SDR
I've been poking around the WebSDR world for a year or so now since I first heard of numbers stations. As I explore the waterfall, one thing that has continually interested me is just how much data is still being transmitted in Morse code. It's EVERYWHERE on the dial.

It's truly an interesting time to be alive that I can stream radio frequencies from across an ocean.

zucked··on Russia 'Likely' to Default on Debts
Even that advantage is eroding over time. It obviously will take time, but there is a lot of onshoring happening. The west realizes what a mistake it was to outsource so much of the manufacturing and technology capacity to a singular entity.
zucked··on Finland or Sweden joining NATO would spark Russian response, Russia warns
NATO has not been viewed favorably in recent years, and some of it is for good reason. As much as I dislike Trump, he is right that many NATO members don't contribute their fair share. Many countries, even wealthy, highly developed ones, are missing the 2% target by a wide margin. On the name and shame highlight reel is: Norway, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the list goes on.

I suspect we will see a renewed interest in making NATO a stronger alliance after this dust settles.

zucked··on Finland or Sweden joining NATO would spark Russian response, Russia warns
This is all part of the plan. If you run around lighting a dozen tiny fires around the house, even the best firefighting efforts might miss one of them before it becomes an inferno. Russian strategy, time and time again, has been to sow chaos. They don't have the might, economy, or means to expand beyond their own sandbox, so they get by throwing sand at passersby. It's death by a thousand paper cuts; worldwide guerilla warfare in the economy, societal, and minds of their enemies.

TLDR; they're fucking with our collective heads.

zucked··on New York is using cameras with microphones to ticket loud cars
I think the OP is a little hyperbolic, but I wouldn't be so dismissive of the idea. My metro has a no-chase policy for motorcycles. Sure, it's a heck of a dangerous way to make a getaway, but as long as you can shake the first guy, a rider is pretty well free to make a getaway as long as there is no helicopter in pursuit.
zucked··on New York is using cameras with microphones to ticket loud cars
>You could just write a letter saying the person in the pic wasn't you. As long as the ticket is tied to a driver you can basically get away with it via this route.

That seems like an asinine way to apply that law. If the vehicle is registered to you, it's your responsibility. Lent it to your uncle and he rolled a stop? Well, the car's registered to an owner, that's their problem to sort out.

zucked··on Google Search Is Dying
That's not the point - the point is that paid shills are astroturfing reddit enthusiast subreddits, so that operator doesn't shield you at all. Once a hobbyist subreddit gets big enough, it attracts a lot of attention from shady types trying to capitalize on the captive audience. I've seen it happen numerous times (only when the offender is caught) in the /r/watches subreddit, the /r/overlanding subreddit, etc.
zucked··on New York is using cameras with microphones to ticket loud cars
This is happening in my major metro, as well. A kind of flippant attitude toward even the most basic of compliance seems to be taking root. Cars are running Stop signs and red lights without even slowing, the number of cars with no license plate displayed at all is on the rise and all of this seems to be happening at a time when enforcement is virtually non-existent. Even more alarming is that property crime (theft, particularly) is through the roof.

While I place a lot of the blame at the feet of the police for failing to enforce law, I also understand that at least in my city, even repeat offenders are being released back into the wild with no skin in the game - a "personal recognizance" bond.

I'm a left of center kind of guy, but this idea that we can totally kid-glove criminals (especially repeat ones) with peace and love and respect and whatever new-agey shenanigans that's helped us get to where our social order is falling apart doesn't fly with me.

zucked··on Google Release Chrome OS Flex
There isn't a single Samsung Device on the supported devices list. That seems odd to me, given how many Samsung devices I believe are out there.
zucked··on Google Search Is Dying
I, too, search "<search term> + reddit" often for product reviews and such. Thing is, the results on that front have started to slide as the paid review side of the internet catches on. I'm finding that it's getting harder and harder to trust the reddit search results - lots of shill accounts and obvious junk. That's not a google problem, specifically, but it's another degradation of a workaround for declining search result quality :(
zucked··on Thousands of Mazdas in the Seattle area are stuck on a single FM radio station
Sounds like an excellent time to do a pledge drive with NO ESCAPE.
zucked··on Building a modern home in the woods
Thanks for this - I have what you might call champagne taste on a beer budget. I've always wanted to live in a small, but highly efficient house in the woods. You know, something that looks like it came from an architectural magazine. But I am consistently blown away by what even pre-fab homes cost. I clearly don't have the budget that the author does, but the process felt eerily similar to mine so far.

It's never mentioned how much acreage was purchased, I don't think. My mental block is anything sub 5 acres where I am looking. My current trouble is that I don't live anywhere near where the property I am looking at is. Getting there is… quite a to-do. I'm leery of putting much trust in a realtor as my eyes/ears given that 1.) the property is cheap enough that their commission will be small potatoes and 2.) they have an incentive to sell you _something_. How does one navigate that part? How much of the soil test/survey/etc was done pre-sales, how much was a contingency, or do you just YOLO it?

zucked··on Google Is Forcing Me to Dump a Perfectly Good Phone
Furthermore - should the user succeed in flashing CalyxOS, they will inevitably be faced at one point with something about their device that doesn't work quite right. Maybe it's tied to Google Play Services (and the g-apps shim that Calyx supports) or a banking app that won't pass the security checks and thusly, won't open.

I've not run Calyx myself, but those are issues I've personally experienced with other ROMs. If the author just wants a phone that works, this isn't the best option. I find the "is forcing me to.." a bit hyperbolic, but their point stands.

zucked··on Order your rapid tests from the USPS (US only)
Well, I actually think it helps indicate how much a lower risk this variant is, for starters.
zucked··on Order your rapid tests from the USPS (US only)
I tested positive over the Christmas break via PCR with basically zero noticeable symptoms (I had a headache and a runny nose for half a day.) I only got tested out of a sense of due diligence for upcoming family visits.

I suspect that numbers in this wave are being VASTLY underreported not through any malfeasance, but by the fact that omicron has already run through a huge swath of the population more or less asymptomatically.

zucked··on Order your rapid tests from the USPS (US only)
A lot of people love to dogpile on the USPS, but they're AWESOME and I'd happily give them a bigger slice of the funding pie to continue to improve.

I occasionally schedule package pickups for the next business day via the USPS website. No issues - package gets picked up by my mail carrier every single time. I occasionally go on vacation and pause my mail. No problem - all done online and delivered together when I get home. I've changed my address three times in the last decade - all done online and executed flawlessly. My day's mail gets scanned and sent to me digitally so I can decide if I need to go to the mailbox that day. It all just works pretty darn well.

zucked··on When did Maytag go bad? (2007)
I did - I bought a Speed Queen set. To be fair, mine was a set of used units, but after reading thousands of these anecdotes across the internet, I knew that they were easily rated for 10k+ loads.

The part that was true - they're built like tanks. The part I didn't expect - they're super rudimentary machines. They're loud and not particularly efficient.

I had mine for just over a year before my wife voluntold me to find something else.

zucked··on LastPass appears to be holding users' passwords hostage
Here's a hint: non-compliance is basically a finger wag, perhaps a slap on the wrist in the most extreme case.
zucked··on LastPass appears to be holding users' passwords hostage
This is going to turn into a thread full of recommendations for PW managers before long, so here's my plug for Bitwarden.
zucked··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
Similar story - boosted mid Nov. Travelled over Christmas. Have been wearing K95 masks as properly as I can as often as I can when out in public. No real symptoms to speak of, but took a PCR just to be sure. Bing! Positive.

Not sure from where I got it, but the contagiousness of Omicron is impressive.

zucked··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
I, too, think that Omicron is the beginning of the transition back to "normal" with Covid becoming endemic. Everyone is going to be exposed to Omicron if they haven't already.

I expect that for the next year or two, boosters will be recommended as a yearly "flu shot" to give you a decent chance of being minimally affected if exposed. Omicron will continue to be the dominate strain, finding hosts in both the vaccinated and unvaccinated. The difference will be that we will have a myriad tools at our disposal to prevent serious illness and treat it when it does happen.

zucked··on Lab Leak 2.0?
Heavy agree - I can entertain theories just fine, but those are the jankiest of sources that do not at all support the theory that Delta was a lab leak, simply that a technician was infected by Covid and the prevailing believe is that it was a mouse > human transmission.
zucked··on Lab Leak 2.0?
If any of this is true, and I don't have enough brain power to decipher if it is or is not, would it be at least in the realm of possibility that Omicron was not an accidental leak; perhaps, rather, a deliberate one, to counteract the original (and Delta variant's) virulence and impact?

We know that the virus is likely to continue to mutate in the wild, on its own - and that the virus in the wild has upended our way of life with great economic costs. Is this a viable path way to introduce widespread natural immunity? Omicron introduces mutations with extremely high contagious properties but very mild virulence. In one swoop, you expose vaccine-hesitant and developing nations to a virus they're likely to survive, help inoculate them against future mutations and outcompete the dominate strains such that the human race is somewhat protected against future infections.

In effect, you kind of "undo" the original mistake.

zucked··on Retailers say thefts are at crisis level. The numbers say otherwise
I also feel like the social order is slipping - anecdotal, of course, but I've noticed a couple of indicators:

I'm seeing an explosion of blatant moving vehicle violations - things that are hard to believe are "oopsie dasies". I drive _less_ now than I did ten or fifteen years ago, but I'm seeing double of careless red light running, stop sign running, excessive speeding, people spinning donuts in the middle of intersections, hit and runs. It's appalling.

On a similar token, I feel like I've never seen the level of clearly unregistered vehicles on the roads - expired temporary tags, expired tags, and often, no registration displayed at all. They seem to operate with virtual impunity.

Then you have people raising a fit about mask mandates, stealing in broad daylight, and the like. They know there's basically nothing going to be done about and it police departments all over are unlikely to respond. Petty theft of property (bikes, cars, etc) is through the roof and rarely is anyone implicated.

It's honestly depressing. I understand a lot of the factors are likely to be traced back to a diminishing economic prospects, but it's hard to see society coming apart at the seams like it is.

zucked··on Google is building a new augmented reality device and operating system
How is a tiny screen overlaid in an accessible field of vision, not totally obscuring your perception of reality, NOT "augmenting reality"? I agree it barely meets the threshold, but I don't write it off as not AR full stop.
zucked··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
I mean, I can appreciate the snark (CO born and raised) but the who "Californian" really hit the peak in the 90's. The next wave was Texas, and now there are so many people moving here it's hard to pinpoint a majority. Ironically, I'm very strongly considering leaving because all the things I love(d) about Colorado are being destroyed now.
zucked··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
You're decamping for Portland? You're in for a surprise.
zucked··on U.S. lawmakers call for privacy legislation after Reuters report on Amazon
It is a California regulation, yes. I suspect that OP is making reference to the fact that as California goes, often so goes the national policy. Or, at least that's how it's played out with regularity in the past.
