Imagine putting all of science on a common (diagrammatic) footing, implemented down to the level of types so you can immediately perform calculations...mouthwatering.
zrkrlc··on Double Entry Accounting for Developers
Huh, you used `clojure.spec` but then used YAML. I get it for the UX reasons, but I would have guessed you'd be generating edn under the hood.

Symbol grounding is as much a problem in AI as whether or not our use of language is meaningful. Does our language encode particular models of the world? Yes? Good. Then AI models also encode models of the world.
zrkrlc··on I Am Deleting the Blog
It wasn’t an overreaction given that it’s happened to him before. And people absolutely called his clinic to try and get him fired.

Saying that this is merely an “amateur mistake” or “bureaucratic oversight” is naïve.

Seconding this. A threat is only credible if known.

With this, the recent executive order suspending temporary work visas, the cancellation of Robert Hanson and Steve Hsu, the recession...

Not a great time to be part of the grey tribe right now.

zrkrlc··on A History of Clojure [pdf]
All right. That's it. I'm porting over all my code to Clojure.

Any tips to get me started? I'm writing a web app to process DAG-formatted data.

EDIT: Looking at re-frame + reagent 'cause I have some React background. I also found The Joy of Clojure and Elements of Clojure from other threads. Anything else I should know before diving in? (Past experience: Haskell, Python, C#, JS)

How much would people pay for an expertise development app? Been coding one as a side project for some time now and I'm thinking I have to put it in front of actual users as soon as possible.
zrkrlc··on Let's remove quaternions from every 3D engine (2018)
Huh, it absolutely does. Alan Macdonald wrote a book about geometric calculus and made a companion video series for it. Here’s the section defining manifolds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfwdlW7Yr_I

That said, tensors are in fact more general than geometric algebra’s multivectors (in that the latter form a quotient algebra of the former). But not all tensors correspond to manifolds as we know them in physics and I argue that GA keeps track of the geometric properties we want better.

Neat idea, but still needs a lot of polish.

We have the opposite goal. Mind sharing why? (I mean, aside from skyrocketing rent and the shifting startup tide)
zrkrlc··on Ask HN: 2020 goals and resolutions?
That's an interesting problem. Maybe keep launching side projects until you can recoup what you can live on?

LinuxFromScratch.org might be up your alley, though I suppose it's still one level higher than actually writing your own kernel.
zrkrlc··on Show HN: Would appreciate your feedback on something I'm working on.
Hi Akina. Sounds like an interesting project, but my concern is that your title sounds rather demanding. In general, length until the request substitutes for politeness in English so I think better alternatives would be "Would appreciate your feedback on something I'm working on." or "Would like feedback on a project of mine." The word "want" is also rather forceful for someone who is soliciting other people's help. Just cultural tips.

I know we encourage a culture of straightforwardness on this site, but in my experience even people who say they want succinctness still get offended and/or take the wrong meaning away from direct statements.

zrkrlc··on The Cost of Avoiding Sensitive Questions
I know I don't sound like it, but I completely get where you're coming from. It's weird and rather sketchy to find out that someone you're talking to is just following rules in their head. It's just that for people like me, conversations are not primitive actions. We need an explicit mental model to anchor ourselves, and while that doesn't excuse predatory behaviour, models are still just tools at the end of the day and some people need them to be seen as "normal".
zrkrlc··on The Cost of Avoiding Sensitive Questions
Well, no. My point was that conversations are not zero-sum games. You produce intimacy via information exchanges, which you both benefit from, though there will always be an information asymmetry between you and your conversation partner.

I know analysing social interactions is seen as a rather, if you will forgive the term, "autistic" (or worse, sociopathic) way of looking at things , but some people do not have the natural capacity for social interactions that the vast majority of the population enjoy. I myself have wondered for years if I lay on the autism spectrum before getting diagnosed with ADHD and so all this I had to learn explicitly from years of observation.

zrkrlc··on Making Your System Observable from the Outside In
Logging and diagnostics in general seem to be cross-cutting concerns whose solutions keep getting discovered again and again. I wonder what happened to aspects, or monadic logging, etc.
zrkrlc··on The Cost of Avoiding Sensitive Questions
Hmm, in my head, I model conversation as a game of who can get the mine the most "intimacy", if you will, while revealing the least about oneself. So risque topics are, as the adjective suggests, high risk, but also high reward. Correspondingly, small talk is a lot of low risk, low reward back-and-forth. You don't have to be intimate with a stranger, but you need to stick your neck out if you want to progress beyond pleasantries.

Here's a longer piece about the whole topic of conversations that I wrote a while back: https://zrkrlc.wordpress.com/2018/11/27/a-long-guide-to-conv...

zrkrlc··on Monads, or Programmable Semicolons (2014)
That is absurd! Was this an April Fools joke (can't load the PDF right now)? I can't imagine any use case for that feature that isn't going to be hell to maintain.
zrkrlc··on When starting school, younger children are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD
ADHD is BOTH underdiagnosed and overdiagnosed, under a Bayesian interpretation of the data.

See a [Slatestarcodex article](http://slatestarcodex.com/2014/09/17/joint-over-and-underdia...) on it.

> In one of them, I was informed that America is medicalizing normal childhood mischief and loading anyone who gets worse than a B+ up with Ritalin or amphetamines as part of the pathologization of everyday life.

> In another, I was informed that ADHD is shamefully underdiagnosed and most of the children who need stimulants most are going without them and failing school unnecessarily, so we need better screening programs and more efforts to seek out potential sufferers of the condition.

> So I asked one of my attendings, Dr. L, which one it was. Are we overdosing ADHD? Or underdiagnosing it?

zrkrlc··on Reddit just passed Facebook as #3 most popular website in US
> The biggest value gain from Reddit, to me, is the ability to centralize effectively around different hobbies and activities.

Not only that, but I use subreddits to organise my research. I collect links to papers and articles as top comments in threads (along with BibTeX information for easy copying), and if it's a book I just list down passages. I then put my notes and thoughts as comments under each.

I know Zotero, wikis and (One|Ever)note are things nowadays, but honestly it gets tiring to have to keep switching contexts every so often.
