zorkw4rg··on GitHub Alternatives
the deep integration go has with github in particular seems more ridiculous then ever.
zorkw4rg··on Space Invaders from Scratch
Its certainly not hard to calculate but a if this index then this vertex coordinates, and so on, seems significantly simpler than having to calculate anything at all? It sure what be more verbose though.
zorkw4rg··on Discussion if Google Fonts is GDPR compliant
Yes competitors have an unjust advantage if they don't comply with GDRP and you can take legal action against them. There is no authority that goes around deciding when this actually makes sense or is harmful to the economy. Which was my point.

> the only one profiting is the lawyer

how would I not profit from my competition having to pay money, I don't care if I get the money.

zorkw4rg··on Discussion if Google Fonts is GDPR compliant
There is no major european internet company worth speaking about, so I think they probably don't care if it irreparable damages their own local companies in the process of damaging the foreign ones since they are virtually non existent anyhow.

Ironically the foreign big ones have enough resources to comply to the law, small local ones don't and will die/never be created in the first place.

> the regulating authorities can pick whoever they want to prosecute

It doesn't really work that way, at least not in germany, anyone can just sue (or threaten to sue) their competition over this (they already started) there is no such thing as this mythical benevolent authority who could stop this wanton destruction you are talking about.

now that unreadable shader trick might be neat and all, but since GLSL supports if statements why not use this and make it readable? There certainly won't be any performance issues with rendering a single triangle, but I suppose people want to feel clever?

zorkw4rg··on Strftime's alpha-sorted man page vs. well-meaning people
you might call this a gotcha of this obscure standard called UNIX/POSIX, although...

> %G The ISO 8601 week-based year (see NOTES) with century as a decimal number. The 4-digit year corresponding to the ISO week number (see %V). This has the same format and value as %Y, except that if the ISO week number belongs to the previous or next year, that year is used instead. (TZ)

I think that's pretty clear, so its actually just a case of not reading / bothering to understand the documentation. I think if you really want to bulletproof a system against incompetency we should probably not start with C.

zorkw4rg··on CPY – Code C/C++ with no redundancy
I would love to be able to write C++ without having to write header files, there is an insane amount of redundancy between header/sources in any C++ project. I don't even care about anything else, that would be the most important thing this tool should support flawlessly.
zorkw4rg··on How the Nintendo Switch prevents firmware downgrades
Maybe for their next console they could wire the case so it will destroy some crypto chips when anyone attempts to open it. Another idea might be to wire in a radio clock with a set date in the future that causes a over voltage in the SoC, that could be more accurate than to rely on the obsolescence of the glued in battery. Also I think they should learn from Sim City (2013), I know EA eventually released a patch that put the server side single player code in the client again, but Nintendo should learn from that mistake.

But with all seriousness, Nintendo really should learn from the failures in their past, I mean come-on! I can still play Zelda on my original Game Boy Pocket I can even replace the batteries without any tools, come on what were they thinking!

/edit although.. I do like that you damage the switch everytime you put it in the dock, must give them that

zorkw4rg··on Show HN: Create a personalized and optimized webpack configuration
You can use one tool to optimize and base64 inline images and another to compile SCSS and inline it of course. But then you discover that you also want to optimize and inline images placed within css url() properties so you implement that feature in your build pipeline, then you discover... you get the point. Webpack gives you a flexible configurable and extensible way to handle any such case in any environment which is why everyone uses it for modern frontend development. I think questioning webpack is like questioning why people are using dependency injection frameworks in modern java.

zorkw4rg··on Quake III Arena GPL Source Release (2012)
I'm pretty sure its perfectly aligned if you have the correct tab size that was used for the whole project. Which is the stupidest thing about using tabs over spaces.
zorkw4rg··on Quake III Arena GPL Source Release (2012)
looking at code like this in github always reminds me why I prefer spaces over tabs, look at all that broken alignment:

zorkw4rg··on Radio host Art Bell has died
I love art bell, really sad about this :( There is so many things I could point to, but probably my most memorable interview he ever had was with "mel waters" about a bottomless hole in his back yard. Just a fantastic creepy mystery fiction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA5KIRChve0

zorkw4rg··on ZFS on Linux: Unlistable and disappearing files
basically the reason I like my filesystems a few decades old and mature, I would not trust zfs or btrfs with anything critical.
zorkw4rg··on Computer system transcribes words users “speak silently”
how can you possibly claim this so confidently, but sure keep believing its impossible, until its not, but then its too late to worry about anyways. This seems like an incredibly foolish opinion on this matter.
zorkw4rg··on History of Spring Framework and Spring Boot
Just mentioning your IDE as an essential part of the "stack" shows how little core understanding you have. You should read up on the documentation of the basics of java, gradle and spring first. Not sure maybe rails developers expect everything to be spoon fed to them in pieces of 5 minute screencasts or something?
zorkw4rg··on Google is shutting down its goo.gl URL shortening service
I think thats good advice for anything, I would however put the caveat on things that use open protocols. I have no issue using AWS SES (Simple Email Service) because thats just SMTP, I would however never use something like Firebase. Just measure the time it would take you to get rid of it in a project.

I would also never use the sentiment shared on HN much for anything, half of the people here have a stake in their own little proprietary technology they want you to sell :P

zorkw4rg··on The Art of Assembly Language (1996)
I only got into assembly recently when programming the C64, its such a simple instruction set and there is so much documentation that it seemed to me much easier to get into. Also its fun to have to work around its limitations.
zorkw4rg··on ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2018 review: The only laptop in a professional’s paradise
I agree, however check out the gunmetal grey version, its very professional and modern looking. But I agree with the normal black one with this obnoxious lime green lid logo on the front. The razor logo is just horrible.
zorkw4rg··on ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2018 review: The only laptop in a professional’s paradise
exceptionally well, the only other comparable manufacturer would be Dell that offers some native Linux/Ubuntu machines. You can expect huge issues with all other vendors.
zorkw4rg··on ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2018 review: The only laptop in a professional’s paradise
I switched to a Razer Blade Stealth, its around 400€ cheaper with the same specs except a QHD+ display (glossy, touch, 3200x1800). I'm wondering why Thinkpad only offers their WQHD (highest available resolution, 2560x1440) glossy? Also still no 4K/QHD+ display, still no 32GB RAM support. I don't really see much of a advantage anymore, they only reason for me to stay with thinkpad would've been the keyboard that is just fantastic in comparison with _any_ other manufacturer.

/edit clarified resolution/ fixed grammar

zorkw4rg··on VPN leaks users’ IPs via WebRTC
Clickbait? Its not "VPN providers" its "VPN provider software", I never even thought of using their software, most just give you the credentials for OpenVPN/IPSEC/PPTP or similar. Also if anonymity is of "real" concern you should never use a system that knows your real IP address in the first place. Instead create the vpn tunnel on a separate host system and run something like Tails in a VM (or better yet separate physical hardware).
zorkw4rg··on Google starts blocking “uncertified” Android devices from logging in
Yep which makes sense for play store etc., except samsung pre-installs the facebook app in this way. I would be surprised if facebook does pay samsung nothing for this. Similar how google pays mozilla to keep google as the default search engine.
zorkw4rg··on Google starts blocking “uncertified” Android devices from logging in
with a rooted phone I was able to delete such a system app using pm uninstall, was this doing a remount,rw on the system partition to remove it under the hood, or how does this work then?

Because I thought that was more of a "you pay us to make your app unremovable preinstalled on all of our phones"-thing rather than anything technical.
