zombieprocesses··on When CEOs’ Equity Is About to Vest, They Cut Investment to Boost the Stock Price
After the financial crisis, people were demanding that CEO pay be tied to company performance. So instead of large salaries, CEOs were given large equity positions ( options ). The politicians/people thought this was a punishment, but it was actually a great boon for CEOs. Not only do they pay 20% on capital gains instead of nearly 40% on salary, they can boost stock prices artificially over the short term by taking out loans ( nearly 0% for the last 10 years ) and then buy stocks back.

This is also a favorite hedge fund raid. Hedge funds open up large positions on companies. Demand board seats. Get board seats and then get the execs to sell assets, layoff employees and take out loans to buyback shares. Get out with a nice profit. And the company is left with a huge debt loan that'll crush them once interest rates rise.

Can you blame them? People act in their selfish self-interest.

It's the same thing with cops and firefighters. Their pensions are calculated based on the earnings of the last few years of employment. So that save vacation days the last few years to inflate their earnings the last few years.

If there is one thing you can count on, it's human greed. And I'm not pretending I'm above it myself.

The problem is that the system is set up to be exploited by the CEOs/etc.

zombieprocesses··on Google sued over excluding white and Asian men in hiring to boost diversity
It's an article from a reputable source. Why would it be flagged?
zombieprocesses··on The State of American Wages 2017
This is the correct answer. There simply aren't that many asians in the US ( historically and even currently ).
zombieprocesses··on The State of American Wages 2017
Asians get hand-waved out of statistics for the same reason native americans. There aren't that many asians in the US. As the asian population increases, I'm sure you'll see more analysis.

Keep in mind asians were barred from immigrating to the US for much of the 20th century.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_Act_of_1924

The asian population in the US was effectively 0% ( less than 1% ) for most of the 20th century.

It wasn't until the 1970s that immigrants from asia started arriving.

Also, asians ( particularly asian women ) marry outside their race, so that stagnates the US asian population and hence limits the statistical analysis that can or will be done.

Maybe racism was a reason decades ago, but it isn't why asians aren't included in these stats. It's because there aren't that many asians in the US.

Edit: You will find asians in data where there are significant asian population - california/hawaii and college population. But generally, in overall US population stats, asians are left out because of their low population numbers.

zombieprocesses··on For Whom the Cell Trolls
And trump and the liberal media are the main culprits of causing that doubt. As I said, the russia is just convenient scapegoat. And that in and of itself isn't helping people trust the media.

Everytime I see an article about russia now, I can't help but roll my eyes.

zombieprocesses··on For Whom the Cell Trolls
Russia's narrative? It's the narrative of Trump and the liberal media.

With trump calling everything he disagrees with "fake news" and the liberal media calling everything they disagree with "fake news", it's disingenuous for the media to blame russia. It's a scapegoat. Throw in foxnews and the conservative media and their attacks and accusations of "fake news". And you have modern america.

zombieprocesses··on China using big data to detain people before crime is committed
>Are you seriously whataboutism events from a few hundred years ago? Wow. Just wow.

Try a few decades.

> People in China cannot speak. We have to speak for them somehow.

Goodness.

> Here is a snippet from a reddit post from a student in China.

You mean the website full of russian, chinese, european and american propagandists where you can't take anything seriously? Where anyone can pretend to be anything and lie all day long? Did you write that reddit comment?

> sorry my English sucks

Going through your comment history, your english is fine. I don't know why you are pretending and faking as if your english sucks.

> I tried my best to write in English. As a native Chinese,

I thought native chinese couldn't speak? "People in China cannot speak. We have to speak for them somehow. "

> I can't stop to feel pessimistic about the future, hell, now I know we are doomed, it'll be easier to suffer if just push me off the building instead of letting me watch it burning for decades.

zombieprocesses··on China using big data to detain people before crime is committed
> we feel like we cannot change anything about China and how it governs its people

Who are we to change anything about china? Talk about hubris. Considering the horrors and war crimes we committed against china for 150 years, I don't think china is interested on our input.

> After reading about the uigher concentration camps in China

That's as silly as a chinese person saying after reading about the native american "concentrations", they need to take a stand.

> I don’t want to help the government terrorize my friends in China anymore.

Your friends? If the government is "terrorizing" your friends, what are they doing in china?

Get off your high horse. We aren't the world police and we certainly aren't saints. Pretending we are "moral" while destabilizing countries and murdering hundreds of thousands of innocent people is rather hypocritical.

Or it can stay irrational as long as it has a wealthier billionaire backing it.

People forget that HLF was headed for collapse until Icahn and a few other billionaires backstopped HLF.

There is a reason why Ackman is worth $1 billion and Icahn is worth $16 billion.

zombieprocesses··on Google Shopping is no longer filtering all searches containing “gun”
It is insane that google did that in the first place. The amount of censorship creeping into google the last few years is rather disappointing.

We need more competition in search and technology. Google would never have done this when they were fighting yahoo, excite, altavista and dozens of other search engines for their survival.

Now that they are a near monopoly, they are playing "political police man"?

There is too much politics seeping into tech.

Google should be displaying results that the user wants, not what they want the user to see.

zombieprocesses··on New York Will Never Be Silicon Valley. And It's Good with That
clickbait filler "news/journalism" like this just irritate me so much.

Firstly, who said we want to be silicon valley? Secondly, who are these two journalists that gives them the authority to say what ny is good or not good with? What the hell do they know about anything? Thirdly, they comparing a major city to what amounts to a business district. Maybe if they compared district ( garment, finance ) to silicon valley, there might be a point to this article.

It's such a non-story turned into one just because they need to publish rubbish everyday.

zombieprocesses··on After rising for 100 years, electricity demand is flat
> LED lightbulbs, LCD TVs instead of monitors, vastly improved efficiency standards/technologies for various appliances, fact you can do loads of stuff with a smartphone instead of watching a giant TV, etc etc

It's not this. We are getting bigger tvs. Bigger monitors. Residential sector energy use is increasing.

Commercial/Industrial sector uses most of the electricity.

The decline is a reflection of the stagnation of commercial businesses/industry in the TVA area.

zombieprocesses··on Stanford, USC, Duke study shows AI can read contracts better than lawyers
> The AI's effect is that some tasks get automated and require much less labor but in many cases a real human lawyer is still required to communicate with the client.

For every 1 lawyer in front of a client or jury, there are dozens if not hundreds of lawyers doing grunt work. The vast majority of legal work is reading documents. That's what most lawyers do and it pays well. If that goes, it's going to put a significant pressure on profession and wages.

It's going to be great for the top lawyers at top firms as they can charge more, work more clients and their overhead drops significantly.

Should be interesting how things pan out.

zombieprocesses··on Cities and Ambition (2008)
NYC always had a strong tech environment.

> finance and money seem to be losing prestige a bit in favor of tech.

Money will never lose its prestige in NYC. Tech is now where the money is going so I guess the prestige will naturally increase.

> I feel I walk around and see a lot more people these days whom I say to myself "they are definitely in tech" whereas 10 years ago or so that would rarely happen.

What? I worked all throughout the 2000s in tech in NYC. We've always been here.

The second largest tech industry in the world is in NYC after silicon valley. And it's been that way for a long time.

zombieprocesses··on New Maps Reveal Global Fishing's 'Vast Scope of Exploitation of the Ocean'
> I'm astonished at how much fishing is going on around Europe.

Why would that surprise you? Europe has a long tradition of fishing. And europe's population is 800 million strong. They even had a brief "war" in the north atlantic over fish.

http://britishseafishing.co.uk/the-cod-wars/

Japan and China are targeted in many fearmongering articles about fishing/whaling/etc because stories about them get traction/reaction. Maybe because of ethnic/racial tension. Who knows.

Try "Japan is killing whales" vs "Norway/Iceland is killing whales".

or

"China is overfishing" vs "Europe is overfishing".

The former gets the most reaction/clicks even though the latter outwhales and outfishes the former.

The biggest culprit is europe, then us, and then the japanese and then the chinese. It's primarily the europeans and us that are destroying fisheries. Not only that, europe's fishing reach is global due to their colonial heritage.

There is a very strong fishing tradition in europe. Nearly wiped out the whales in the 1800s. Wiped out the fish/tuna/etc in the mediterranean and the north atlantic. Then moved over to the US and wiped out our fisheries along our atlantic and alaska. And the regions destroying fisheries along africa are not the chinese, as you see on the news, but it's the europeans by a long shot.

zombieprocesses··on Denied Breaks, U.S. Poultry Workers Wear Diapers on the Job (2016)

zombieprocesses··on Compiler bug? Linker bug? Windows Kernel bug
This is the case with all major software releases. The bug tracker is filled with bugs for any major release. It's just a matter of team lead, project manager and higher ups deciding what the priorities are. Not every feature makes it and not every bug gets fixed.

The key is to hit the milestones and get the product working as much as possible.

zombieprocesses··on The oddness of Isaac Newton
> Modern education is very careful to remove any trace of unorthodox viewpoints from its pantheon of scholars.

It's not just modern education/history. It's said that history is written by people who either love or hate someone or some event. Also, history has innate biases of the writer. It's why we focus primarily on western history while arabs, indians, chinese, etc have their own version of history. All history throughout history is peppered with half truths and embellishments or sometimes outright propaganda.

> I never knew Newton was a staunch Arian before today, much like how I never knew that Pythagoras was a strict vegetarian, or that Socrates had a hatred of democracy

Or how columbus was an absolute genocidal butcher along with being a great discoverer. Or how genghis khan and the mongols were extremely cosmopolitan/egalitarian/merciful as well as been brutal conquerors. Or how the soviet union was at the forefront of the workers, lgbt, women's rights movement while being a horrific totalitarian nightmare. Or how Mao united a divided and brutalized china and freed china from european colonization while also starving tens of millions of chinese.

Depending on where you grow up and what history you are taught, you'll only see a particular snapshot. It's only when you make the effort yourself that you get to see the larger picture rather than the one framed by others.

zombieprocesses··on Orange juice exists due to climate change in the Himalayas millions of years ago
> You read the title, saw it had OJ in it, and rushed to the comments to rant about it?

It seems to be a strange quirk of HN lately. You see this often with facebook posts. "I quit facebook and it cured my cancer". There was a post about tea being good for you and someone chimes with something like, "I quit tea cold turkey and it helped me get a raise!".

Seems a lot of people on HN attribute their successes and failures to arbitrary things and something in a headline clicks and they have to evangelize.

zombieprocesses··on Ask HN: Is it 'normal' to struggle so hard with work?
Yes. It's normal. It's why people have to pay you to work. Unless you are a slavish minded individual, why else would you be motivated to work? You are trading your valuable time for something you don't want to do for money.

zombieprocesses··on How Apple is paving the way to a ‘cloud dictatorship’ in China
Not the best example of european "tech industry". Nokia failed horribly and pretty much went bankrupt and got bought up by MSFT.

Also, I wouldn't call nokia as part of the "internet industry".

Compared to the US and China, europe has performed rather poorly. Europe has hundreds of millions of more people than the US and yet lags far behind the US.

Where is europe's facebook, google, microsoft, amazon, netflix, etc? At least china has their baidu, alibaba, tencent, etc.

The most prominent tech company in europe is SAP and they are more of a software/database/etc company than an internet company.

Europe has to get its act together and get in the game.
