zolbrek··on Ask HN: Open-Source Mobile Phones
The camera app is not great, I am considering switching to an iPhone simply to take better pictures. Occasionally the fingerprint sensor on my Pixel 6 on a secondary profile bugs out as well and decides to stop working even after entering the PIN, and the only solution I've found is to end the secondary session and start it up again.

Oh and the battery life with sandboxed play services is disappointing too, if I go out for the night I need to charge it beforehand.

Other than that I have no complaints.

zolbrek··on Two years of raising a bilingual daughter
I agree, it seems artificial to me. My daughter is bilingual but that's because her mother is German and we live in Germany. When we're all together we speak English, when my daughter and I are alone we speak English, and when I'm not around they speak German. When we're around Germans we speak German. That's how things just naturally unfolded. If our daughter replies in German during an English conversation we don't force her to speak English.

zolbrek··on Ask HN: Open-Source Mobile Phones
I don't think there's any open source hardware, but you can use GrapheneOS on a Pixel and it works well.
zolbrek··on US Must Be Ready for Simultaneous Wars with China, Russia
I agree, and I don't think the EU will be able to militarize to the degree required in the coming years. The language differences and the individual militaries of the various EU countries make coherency on the field more complicated than it is for the US, and only a fraction of European soldiers participate in NATO exercises.

I would vote with my wallet in this way too if I could afford a Porsche.
zolbrek··on Ask HN: Has anyone here dropped smartphones and used a dumb phone before?
I tried going back to a dumb phone in 2011 after having previously used an iPhone 3gs, I was able to manage just fine back then but I don't think I would be able to now. I used my dumb phone until the Nexus 4 came out and I started playing around with Cyanogenmod.
zolbrek··on US Must Be Ready for Simultaneous Wars with China, Russia
As someone who lives in Europe I would prefer to remain a subject of the Great American Empire than get swallowed up by the Russians or the Chinese, and I doubt Europe alone will ever have the military might necessary to defend its sovereignty against a possible Russian-Chinese-Iranian axis. Even if the US decides to give up its role as the world's judge, jury, and executioner, how long would a absolute insular existence last, and what would life for Americans under those conditions be like?
zolbrek··on Tainting the CSAM client-side scanning database
Yeah, I communicate with way too many people on iPhones who will simply not switch to Android. If it disappears from the Apple App Store we will have to use a different messenger.
zolbrek··on Oil sector is lobbying for inefficient hydrogen cars to delay electrification
>Ice vehicles gonna get squeezed out by economics

You mean ICE vehicles are going to get squeezed out by regulations.

zolbrek··on Oil sector is lobbying for inefficient hydrogen cars to delay electrification
>This means that the government cannot add taxes on electricity used in vehicles, as it does with gas.

You don't think you'll be paying a significant electricity tax once ICE cars are fully phased out?

Also, I don't know what you drive but my diesel has quite a bit more range than 350 km. Yours must be quite the guzzler.

zolbrek··on Travelling by Train in Germany
Only slightly exaggerated for the sake of humor, I'd say. I have a friend who frequently takes the train and she often has to call her husband to come get her in a nearby city to avoid scheduling catastrophes.
zolbrek··on Cats prefer to get free meals rather than work for them
Depends on the human. Some can live their entire lives on welfare, others would rather rot on the streets than accept any form of goverment help.
zolbrek··on Pixel 7 WiFi does not work in certain countries
GrapheneOS is very usable, I've been using it for the past three years or so. Regarding the lunatic part, I thought he resigned as lead dev.

I didn't have any problems with my 4a or 5, but my 6 is only about a year old and I no longer can use the USB-C port. I have to charge it wirelessly. The battery life is crap as well.

zolbrek··on As EV sales surge and cars get heavier, parking garages will have to change
Thanks, I understand where you're coming from better now. It's sort of the opposite with me, I move in circles where I sometimes have to be careful about even being slightly positive about EVs since so many are rabidly against them.

zolbrek··on Kevin McCarthy ousted as speaker in Republican-led House
It's my understanding that he didn't live up to his side of the bargain struck with Gaetz & Co. to become speaker, so Gaetz acted accordingly.

zolbrek··on The Shadowy Global Network Vilifying Climate Protesters
It's like the difference between tossing a firecracker onto someone's balcony and dropping a bomb on the entire goddamn building.

Don't get me wrong, radical green activism saddens me. I think the vandals that recently damaged the Brandenburg Gate should not be able to avail of any get out of jail free passes, and existing laws should be strengthened to discourage eco-vandalism to the fullest. I just can't put this sort of activism and J6 side by side and say they are the same thing.
