zmarty··on Comcast won’t give new speed boost to Internet users who don’t buy TV service
Bandwidth is not a finite physical resource. The marginal cost to add more capacity is tiny. Their cost to serve is tiny. I HATE data caps.
zmarty··on Google's “Director of Engineering” Hiring Test (2016)
I think that approach is misguided. The resume has background information and my opinion is that interviews do not correctly capture the capabilities of a person.
zmarty··on Comparing Google’s TPUv2 against Nvidia’s V100 on ResNet-50
Slower alternative: "fastai with @pytorch on @awscloud is currently the fastest to train Imagenet on GPU, fastest on a single machine (faster than Intel-caffe on 64 machines!), and fastest on public infrastructure (faster than @TensorFlow on a TPU!) Big thanks to our students that helped with this." - https://twitter.com/jeremyphoward/status/988852083796291584
zmarty··on Tesla issues strongest statement yet blaming driver for deadly crash
They technically do, in a Tesla you can report a bug using your voice while you are driving. Now, I don't know if/how they act on the bug reports.
zmarty··on Tesla issues strongest statement yet blaming driver for deadly crash
And where exactly does it say that?
zmarty··on An Update on Last Week’s Accident
Yeah, I'm going to call BS on this one. More specifically, on the lanekeeping claim. The current non-Tesla implementations are worse or much more limited at the price point you mentioned (and frankly, at most price points).
zmarty··on AIM will be discontinued today
I am astounded of the faith people still have that companies and 3 letter agencies will not store and use their data forever, after all the revelations in the past years. And to think this is YCombinator News, not some random news website.
zmarty··on T-Mobile, Sprint break off merger talks
Good. Corporate consolidation is not good for consumers.
zmarty··on NTSB: Tesla’s Autopilot UX a “major role” in fatal Model S crash
Tesla has L2, barely. L3 in fact allows you to not pay attention. L3 requires several seconds (10-15) warning period for you to take over the wheel.
zmarty··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack
You are a "customer" if you want it or not.
zmarty··on AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1920X and 1950X CPUs Announced
I do a lot of video editing, color grading, and video encoding.
zmarty··on Net neutrality is in jeopardy again
If you have no problem with net neutrality, how about we just let it be?
zmarty··on Visual Studio for Mac
Not true, I work with projects where each minute of video is 8 GB. Multiply that with 100 or 120 and you are pretty much at 1 TB.
zmarty··on Let's Encrypt: Active Incident, DNS errors causing service disruption
Is there a Report Spam button anywhere?
zmarty··on 'We print people': The world of 3D portraiture
I cannot tell if the photos in the article are low quality, or the 3D prints themselves.
zmarty··on The Gigabit Age Is Upon Us
UHD video streaming (and I don't mean the super compressed Netflix version of it).
zmarty··on FBI conducts search by disrupting Internet service, posing as repairmen [pdf]
"Here, the government disrupted the internet service to the defendant’s hotel room in order to generate a repair call. Government agents then posed as repairmen to gain access to the defendant’s room and conduct a surreptitious search for evidence of an illegal sports betting operation. By creating the need for a third party to enter defendant’s premises and then posing as repairmen to gain entry, the government violated the defendant’s Fourth Amendment rights."
zmarty··on Larry and Sergey's CS349 at Stanford (last updated Oct 1998)
So... they were teaching a whole course while they were PhD students?
zmarty··on SSH scans - I caught one
Did you read what he said? Unprivileged users CAN start daemons which listen on ports above 1024.
zmarty··on New Amazon EC2 Instance Type - The Cluster Compute Instance
You actually helped make his point.
