zinxq··on I analyzed SaaS billing dark patterns
We have tried both trials with and without CC - the latter is obviously more effective.

On the back-end however, this forced us to spend weeks developing an intelligent automated approval process to limit abuse (which is common).

After that, monitoring systems alert humans to suspicious trial activity for further review. So it continues to be a lot of work.

Financially, we love the idea of a true "free" trial. The abuse was the challenge but we're in a good place with it now. Customers/Potential-customers love it and so do we.

zinxq··on Google admits Kubernetes container tech is too complex
If I were a devops engineer, I'd always push for a migration to Kubernetes. That's job security.
zinxq··on Unverified.email
Mailinator does this (you can get a private SMS to API)
zinxq··on When an SQL Database Makes a Great Pub/Sub
I've always considered message-queues as a close cousin (if not sibling) of databases. Arguably performing the same function with different foci. Pub/sub focusing on the "oplog". DBMS focusing on "state".

(Blockchain another "oplog" that ends up caring a lot about state eventually).

It's no wonder you can use them interchangeably in many common base cases.

zinxq··on Show HN: I made an open-source anonymous email forwarding service
As a data point.. Mailinator lets you point ANY domain to it (for free). Email sent there will go into the public Mailinator system.

In the few times I've read (or started to read) one of Gladwell's books I always think "This book would make a great article".

zinxq··on The Architecture of Mailinator (2007)
Indeed. I thought about a blog post how to configure haproxy to proxy SMTP to mailinator and stay undetectable.

But Mailinator's use case has morphed over the years. It's now used as a tool for QA and UAT testing now a great deal. That use case has spawned private domains and API access.

Same thought process goes toward services that wish to ban it, if they really want to, that's their business.

(You can of course sign-up for a Mailinator account using a Mailinator email)

zinxq··on The Architecture of Mailinator (2007)
import javax.websocket.MessageHandler;

Stayed away from frameworks. Mailinator suffers from "do it yourself" syndrome where I wanted write most things myself for the educational value. No Spring, no web frameworks, straight servlets. Custom SMTP server.

(It does use Redis pub/sub but I did write my own first, Redis was just too easy not to rely on)

zinxq··on The Architecture of Mailinator (2007)
Surprised to see this here now after 11 years.

Needless to say, this is incredibly out of date. Mailinator now runs across several servers with a real-time websocket system tied to Redis channels for incoming emails. The multiple server system is more for fault-tolerance than scaling issues.

The Websocket-to-redis connection allows incoming emails to be available the instant they arrive (fully) at Mailinator. Instantly - no polling front-end or otherwise. Public email storage is still in-memory with a system that chunks emails into common parts and reuses them. A reference counting garbage collector cleans them up once no email in the system is still using that part. I tried compression a million different ways but nothing beat reusing parts of emails.

http://mailinator.blogspot.com/2012/02/how-mailinator-compre...

The 2007 article is a valid picture of things then, but the system has come a long, long way since that time.

Why can mobile providers be still so easily social engineered to this day? Seems like calling them and activating a new SIM (i.e. stealing a number) is still quite easy.
zinxq··on Selling My Bootstrapped SaaS Business
Can you give an idea of the multiples of X (i.e. revenue, Ebitda, etc) that you did consider? You mentioned 6x(monthly-revenue) was bad. But can you discuss the spectrum of what looked good/interesting?

(not asking $$$ .. just multiples that were presented)

zinxq··on Why functional programming matters
My apprehension comes from lack of seeing it in the wild (i.e. scaled businesses).

Google primarily uses C++/Java. Facebook: Hack. Twitter tried Scala and as far as I know, abandon it and went to Java. LinkedIn definitely tried Scala, failed, and went to Java. Square is Ruby/Java.

I'd like to have something to point to as a success story of a company at scale with functional programming. Anyone know of one?

zinxq··on Harland Clarke Acquires RetailMeNot for $630M
That's really interesting. Can you elaborate?
zinxq··on How to Get Rich Trading Bitcoin
The trading strategy aside.

The interesting part is that Bitcoin (or crypto in general) represents a limited supply commodity that will (eventually) start to decrease in available supply because it's also used as an active currency.

The users of it as an active currency (as opposed to the users of it as an investment) are price insensitive and don't care what they pay to borrow bitcoin for a few seconds. As long as volatility isn't crazy those few seconds, they are in and out of it as a store of value immediately.

That activity further limits supply. That's the thesis. Limited and dwindling supply along with having an active use that's price insensitive.

Hence his claim that apart from short-term volatility, as long as it increases it's use as a currency, it's long-term value must rise.

zinxq··on What is driving the Ethereum price spike?
(goes without saying, following is purely conjecture)

Bitcoin has systemic issues arising with transaction rate and block size. Those were ignored (from a speculation standpoint) with the prospect of the ETF. When the ETF was not approved, there's obvious downward speculation pressure on BTC in general. Hence money was looking to leave for some portion of owners.

Ethereum offers a potential haven in that it's well-known and has utility in smart contracts. It's also more attractively priced to hope for a huge price increase as Bitcoin once did.

Running http://www.clickrouter.com - worked out well because I needed it for my other projects and it was an instant revenue win for those use cases alone.
