zinssmeister··on Show HN: Straightforward way to manage your sales pipe
Yes we are in the process of rolling out customization of Lead states. MEDDIC is an interesting strategy and stay tuned for some stuff in that sense ;)
zinssmeister··on Ask HN: Built an app but don't know how to take it to the next phase
Without knowing exactly what your app does I'd say before taking funding or flying to SF you should start to get some kind of traction or a beta going with a user base to learn from. Also sounds like you are unsure how to market your app. If you need a certain size user/content base before your app is interesting you have an engagement wall problem. It might be a good idea to push installs by buying ads (twitter, facebook, etc.) on top of influencer marketing.
zinssmeister··on Ask HN: Open source social dashboard (buffer, hootsuite alternative)?
I'm pretty happy with buffer, its light weight and gets the job done for me. We use it to power https://ivyleads.co and it's very reliable.
zinssmeister··on How to Get What You Want – a short primer for ambitious people
Who is Jason Shen and why should I give him $10 for a book with a terribly silly title?
zinssmeister··on New Relic files S-1 for IPO
Two impressive things: Founder still owns more % than any investor (27.3%) and his Directors & VPs (12 people) together own 68.3% !
zinssmeister··on Ask HN: Can I make it in the Valley and live a well-rounded life?
At a later stage company (post A or B round) you will probably have a similar work-life balance than at your current gig. But if you are thinking about doing an early stage startup you should be prepared to "work" around the clock. Most of my friends working out here have to be available 24/7 and work well over 50hrs a week.

You will also most likely make more money outside of Silicon Valley by being able to save more of your take home pay.

zinssmeister··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2014)
Synack, Menlo Park, CA

Hiring Designers and several Engineering roles https://www.synack.com/careers

zinssmeister··on To Get a Home in San Francisco, First Get a $200,000-a-Year Job
totally agree. It might get you a home in the East Bay but no way you could find something in SF proper.
zinssmeister··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2014)
Menlo Park, CA

Just closed our A round with Google Ventures, Kleiner and Greylock. Looking to add Engineers and Designers https://www.synack.com/careers

zinssmeister··on Ask HN: If you worked with a grad from a code bootcamp, how effective were they?
We interviewed a few and will probably never consider resumes from bootcamp grads again. Calling them Jr. isn't even fair towards CS grads that are actual Jr. level
zinssmeister··on Tesla Announces $1.6 Billion Convertible Notes Offering
those meetings with Apple weren't really "recent". But yeah Apple has a high interest in batteries as well of course.
zinssmeister··on The Secret of Raising Money (Show HN)
I wish this looked less like a Sky Mall item. If I had not found this via HN I would have thought this was a scam.
zinssmeister··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2014)
Menlo Park, CA - Synack https://www.synack.com

Come work with me on building crowd security intelligence software. We are backed by some of the best investors (Greylock, Kleiner Perkins, others...) and offer great perks and benefits (free lunch, 401k, medical, flex time). Currently we are looking for JavaScript Developers (Backbone.js experience would be ideal), RoR Guys and a Sr. Designer.

If you have questions or would like to apply, shoot me an email bjoern@synack.com

zinssmeister··on Box has secretly filed for an IPO
"..its valuation was $10 billion." -.-
zinssmeister··on Why I'm Moving My Business From San Francisco To St. Louis
and if you make 6 figures your income tax alone would make for a mortgage payment in Texas. Property Tax in Cali is also pretty messed up with people paying almost nothing because they inherited their home from their parents along with their tax rate from the 60s.
zinssmeister··on Why I'm Moving My Business From San Francisco To St. Louis
I lived in both states and the weather in the Bay Area isn't enough to justify the heavy income tax, sales tax and cost of housing. It's great that it's in the 60s and 70s year round but with zero rain fall you got other cons making up for pros in that category. Sure Texas is hot and that is a downside but agreeing that the weather in the Bay Area is worth an insane amount of extra cash isn't correct.
zinssmeister··on Why I'm Moving My Business From San Francisco To St. Louis
And so it begins. The Bay Area is starting to lose some of its talent to other areas (in an already tight talent market). This is just one example and I ran into a few others in the past 2 months, that are in a gtfo state. I have also tried to hire good people from other areas of the country that used to be interested in SF but are no longer seeing it as a nice place to actually live, because they too can do the math.
zinssmeister··on Why I'm Moving My Business From San Francisco To St. Louis
"sun tax" is cheaper in Texas. It's zero as in 0% income tax.
zinssmeister··on How do I keep the passion and energy up after 17 years of writing software?
I think a few months or a year (depending on your cash in bank) of traveling/exploring other things aka a sabbatical to recharge the batteries is great.
zinssmeister··on [dead]
we make an easier target.
zinssmeister··on Rapgenius Uniques Fall 90%
It's quite painful to watch these guys take this beating. What they've done wasn't nice, but the consequences are extreme. What is most concerning is the monopoly Google Search has over driving traffic/revenue for most sites.
zinssmeister··on China Just Popped the Bitcoin Bubble
"tumbling to prices not seen since November." Which was 18 days ago.
zinssmeister··on Southwest Airlines Offering In-Flight iMessaging for $2 Per Day
We can argue about the price point, but charging a la carte is a great idea.
zinssmeister··on Server-generated JavaScript responses
Yep, I finished reading but I disagree with this approach. Even in a mostly document based project I would recommend using frontend templates. Fire and forget type actions are just really easy to do and the whole thing just makes more sense IMO
zinssmeister··on Server-generated JavaScript responses
"The template is just JavaScript instead of straight HTML" I guess that's one way to make this work. But for everyone that is serious about writing a web app with a slick UI should build things around api calls and move the views to the frontend (backbone.js & handlebars templates are great).
zinssmeister··on Employee Retention
I agree. It wouldn't hurt for SV to allow some focus on fixing local issues. Housing being the most important problem in my opinion.
zinssmeister··on A look at what lies ahead for Final Fantasy
Which is a weird statement to make. I'd stop making remakes of those SNES classics for all sorts of devices and start work on a true remake of the best (selling) Final Fantasy which was FF7. I can't help but feel they are scared to try.
zinssmeister··on A look at what lies ahead for Final Fantasy
"you can fit so much more game into one unit, of course you want to put in more content so you come up with even more ideas" I actually wish they wouldn't keep adding more and keep future games a bit shorter in play time. Focus.
zinssmeister··on Rails will Ruby-kill Meteor — on why
wow this is really great. thanks for sharing.. had no idea someone was working on this already.
zinssmeister··on Rails will Ruby-kill Meteor — on why
what I would like to see is a Rails type framework specifically geared towards building APIs. I like asset pipeline, give me that, I like gems, I like ActiveRecord, but take views, helpers and all that jazz. I will do that on the frontend thankyouverymuch
