zingplex··on Linux Leading over Early Windows 11 Benchmarks for AMD Ryzen 9 5950X Performance
Can someone here explain why this is news? Isn't it to be expected that a highly optimized production operating system will outperform an OS that's still under development?
zingplex··on Safari 15 on Mac OS, a user interface mess
A setting that most electron and web apps will completely ignore.
zingplex··on It’s not just you – the Apple podcast app is a disaster
I know this is a bit off topic, but with regard to a secure but invisible browser isn't that just Chrome?
zingplex··on The Sad End of Jack Ma Inc
I'm not sure that's true. I've heard a great deal about billionaires and the things they do on their private islands.
zingplex··on Why are American workers becoming harder to find?
Could we put Nobel laureates in scare quotes. The Nobel Prize in economics wasn't actually established by Alfred Nobel but instead Sweden's national bank trying to add credibility to their pseudoscience. The official title of the prize is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

Even members of the Nobel family have come out and said the prize is bullshit.

zingplex··on Show HN: Rustpad, a self-hosted online collaborative text editor
Congratulations on shipping, what you have is very slick.

Quick question, not trying to start a flame war just genuinely curious. Why did you pick OT over other approaches to realtime collaborative editing such as CRDTs?

zingplex··on America’s Forgotten Tea Rooms
I think pretty much anything can be quality food if it's done well enough.
zingplex··on Ask HN: Show me some most beautiful fonts
Essential PragmataPro has a reduced character set for €19. I do think it's $250 dollars better than Iosevka. What convinced me is manual hinting.
zingplex··on Ask HN: Show me some most beautiful fonts
Not open source or free but I find PragmataPro [0] to be absolutely gorgeous. Iosevka comes close but I don't think it'll ever be able to bridge the gap for me.

zingplex··on Microsoft has built an AI-powered autocomplete for code using GPT-3
You don't need AI, just a few email forwarding rules at most.
zingplex··on Starting in August, Google will require that they sign apps, not you
Isn't this exactly why they're doing the reproducible build stuff?
zingplex··on Pandora says laboratory-made diamonds are forever
I normally just tell them "it was a few weeks back". This gives a full year for them to forget about it and has a sufficiently vague period of time that they can't nail you next year should they remember.
zingplex··on Yayagram
Yeah, you're right. My brain made the association between XLR and generic audio cables without thinking.
zingplex··on Yayagram
The use of an XLR cord is a stroke of genius. Having the state of the machine clearly visible and manipulatable by people with fine motor problems solves 90% of the problems I encounter when volunteering with the elderly.
zingplex··on Left-wing party opposed to rare earth mining project wins Greenland election
As someone who lives in a country that is essentially a collection mining companies with a flag (Canada), I'm glad to see other people are starting to take this seriously.
zingplex··on Why no Easter Eggs? (2005)
The fact a QA engineer didn't properly anticipate localization issues with the joke could be indicative of other performance issues.
zingplex··on Why no Easter Eggs? (2005)
I think they're remarking on the irony of getting up on a high horse about trustworthy computing while doing something remarkably untrustworthy only a few years later.
zingplex··on Muboard: Mathematics Chalkboard with LaTeX and Markdown Support
Can you take that and convert it to LaTeX?
zingplex··on rms-open-letter.github.io
I must be missing something. Why was RMS brought back?
zingplex··on Relay Hooks: Improved React APIs for Relay
More detailed post: https://relay.dev/blog/2021/03/09/introducing-relay-hooks/
zingplex··on Blender 2.92
Of those three, I think Firefox is the only one that could be said to be on par with their commercial counterparts. Inkscape is powerful, but the UI isn't very responsive or intuitive. LibreOffice is slow and buggy whenever I use it.
zingplex··on Blender 2.92
Once again Blender is killing it! I find Blender to be one of the best examples of how FLOSS software can be substantially better than their proprietary alternatives.
zingplex··on Infinitely nested iframes
That's a shame. I was interested in seeing how different browser engines handled it.
zingplex··on System76 Launch Configurable Keyboard with Open Source Code
I wonder how the latency is on this.

zingplex··on No support Linux hosting shutting down from hack
With shared hosting still being a thing, I think that's a pretty saturated market.
zingplex··on Chromium cleans up its act and daily DNS root server queries drop by 60B
I didn't think that was possible
zingplex··on The endless browser wars
What would you say their technical edge is now?
zingplex··on City Guesser – GeoGuessr but with video
Let's not forget all the planets that look like the Vasquez Rocks
zingplex··on City Guesser – GeoGuessr but with video
If Hollywood has taught me anything, it's that the answer is always Vancouver.
zingplex··on What I Use Instead of Google
Isn't OSM a major data source for Apple Maps?

Edit: I checked, the OSM wiki actually has a page about it [1]
