zingplex··on Go performance from version 1.2 to 1.18
You're right, ignition does generate bytecode from the AST; it also interprets it.

> With Ignition, V8 compiles JavaScript functions to a concise bytecode, which is between 50% to 25% the size of the equivalent baseline machine code. This bytecode is then executed by a high-performance interpreter which yields execution speeds on real-world websites close to those of code generated by V8’s existing baseline compiler.

Emphasis mine.

You can also find this information on the Wikipedia article you linked to

> In 2016, the Ignition interpreter was added to V8 with the design goal of reducing the memory usage on small memory Android phones in comparison with TurboFan and Crankshaft. Ignition is a Register based machine and shares a similar (albeit not the exact same) design to the Templating Interpreter utilized by HotSpot.

> In 2017, V8 shipped a brand-new compiler pipeline, consisting of Ignition (the interpreter) and TurboFan (the optimizing compiler).

zingplex··on Go performance from version 1.2 to 1.18
V8 does actually include a bytecode interpreter called Ignition to reduce memory usage on stuff that doesn't really need to be heavily optimized.
zingplex··on Ask HN: Best Alternative to Dropbox?
For a Linux user, you can replicate Dropbox trivially by getting an FTP account, mounting it locally with curlftpfs, and then using SVN or CVS on the mounted filesystem. From Windows or Mac, this FTP account could be accessed through built-in software.
zingplex··on The optional chaining operator, “modern” browsers, and my mom
I don't think Android uses a JVM. Android apps are AOT compiled from DEX bytecode.
zingplex··on Poll: Should NPM retain packages against the authors will?
Perhaps customers would be able to sponsor the review of specific packages.
zingplex··on Real Problems That Web3 Solves, Part 1
Perhaps, but I think in this case what killed Persona was lack of adoption and interest from the public, nothing inherent to the actual technology
zingplex··on Real Problems That Web3 Solves, Part 1
I have a hunch that many services they will probably want to collect the emails anyway. It provides websites a convenient excuse to ask people to join their marketing spam list. In most cases privacy isn't a profitable business proposition.
zingplex··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
Because they started their own streaming service, NBC Peacock.
zingplex··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
Isn't Meta still trading under FB, leaving you with FAANG?
zingplex··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
If you're changing a letter in the acronym from F (Facebook) to M (Meta), it is inconsistent to not change G (Google) to A (Alphabet).
zingplex··on Ask HN: Which programming language do you plan to learn in 2022?
Perl or Raku?

Isn't IPFS pretty closely tied with FileCoin?
zingplex··on Kodi: An Open Source Home Theater System
I'm not entirely sure, but perhaps there's an argument to be made that since it's pretty much the only way to get DRM free copies of certain materials piracy at times is justified.
zingplex··on Stop Facebook
I assume most people who go out of their way to route their lives around Facebook are also the type of people to have an ad blocker installed.

zingplex··on IMF warns El Salvador: “Bitcoin should not be used as a legal tender”
While I don't disagree that IMF recommendations should be taken with a grain of salt, they're hardly the only people speaking out to say this is a bad idea. There has been mass protest against the adoption of Bitcoin across the country citing fears around the stability of the cryptocurrency.

zingplex··on Free Apple Support
In the case of cURL, there's a much greater amount of network exposure. It would be extremely irresponsible for Apple to simply ship an older version missing security patches.
zingplex··on FBI held back ransomware decryption key to run operation targeting hackers
> The police will not help you much when your capital (i.e. private property)

Most people don't hold much private property apart from maybe their house. Pretty much everything else from vehicles to toothbrushes fall under the category of personal property.

Private property generates capital for the owner without the owner performing labour, personal property does not. Police will protect the former, not the ladder.

zingplex··on The Forever Trial at Guantanamo
The Taliban offered to turn over Bin Laden for trial in any country other than the US weeks after the attacks [1][2]. If there reason to invade Afghanistan was solely to kill Bin Laden surely they'd just take the Taliban up on their offer.

zingplex··on Psst: Fast Spotify client with native GUI, without Electron, built in Rust
If it's just for tracking, why not ship a JS runtime and run the tracking in a separate thread. No electron needed.
zingplex··on My debloating experience with Poco F3
Does Android even have a full disk encryption option anymore? Last I heard they moved to file based encryption. I don't know enough to knowledgeably discuss the tradeoffs though.
zingplex··on Can we survive technology? (1955) [pdf]
> I should also say that nuclear weapons in dictatorships (more so than oligarchies like Soviet Union) is dangerous.

I'd argue that nuclear weapons are no less safe in representative democracies. The only country to use nuclear weapons against another nation was a representative democracy. The only country to use nuclear weapons against another nation multiple times was a representative democracy. The only country to use nuclear weapons against civilian targets was a representative democracy.

zingplex··on Good Riddance, TurboTax. Americans Need a Real ‘Free File’ Program
I think something by Kafka would be far more apt. It seems that 1984 has become a shorthand for anything vaguely dystopian.

Because 71% of the workforce is preparing to quit.
