ziml77··on Getting syntax highlighting wrong
Your thoughts seem similar to mine. Going overboard with the colors just turns it all into visual noise. But cutting down as far as they have removes useful colors.

I've always thought the default Visual Studio color scheme was a nice balance. And I especially like the green comment color in that theme. It doesn't scream for your attention but also doesn't fade into the background (which, annoyingly, many themes do quite literally).

Of course if the author prefers their extra minimal colors I'm not going to tell them they're wrong. Though framing it as objectively better I do disagree with.

> I'm actually wondering why PC games never converged on a "left joy-con" style controller with a stick and buttons, for one hand, while the other hand holds the mouse. I guess the ordinary keyboard is good enough so there wasn't much pressure to replace it.

Really does seem to be a matter of the keyboard being good enough and knowing that most everyone has one connected to their PC. I've just come to accept that I need to prioritize what matters most for a given game. So, selecting between KB+M or controller on a case-by-case basis. I think the only game recently that annoyed me for not fitting one or the other very well was Cyberpunk 2077 because the cars were very touchy and would have been better with analog input.

ziml77··on Sony PlayStation 2 fixing frenzy
Yep! It was a very cool idea, though you were seriously lacking in easily accessible buttons so I didn't stick with it.

I think the problem I had with the left-half controller layout is that it still used A and B but they were hard to press. Same problem with holding 2 controllers in the center. The N64 controller definitely was not the greatest design for shooters. (And now that I've tried to use one more recently, not a great design in general for larger hands... mine don't really fit the center grip)

Forgive me sounding like Claude, but you’re absolutely right! I’ve played platformers from that era recently but it’s been a long time since I touched the shooters. I was mixing them up in my recollection. The shooters had a weird mix and for some reason even though Goldeneye had a bunch of control scheme options, none of them let you put all movement on one input and all camera control on the other.
ziml77··on DDoS Botnet Aisuru Blankets US ISPs in Record DDoS
Some people get very emotional about the games that they play and will pay to have them DDoSed because of something or someone they're angry about. Others just love to cause chaos and will happily buy a DDoS attack to screw other people over. They even get to watch the outcome in real-time because of streamers.

That's really strange because that setup was effectively the default for N64 games. Stick under your left thumb for movement and the C buttons under your right thumb for camera control

What was remapped for PC? I don't have a PS5 so PC is how I played R&C:RA and I don't recall there being any difference in how the trigger pulls were interpreted between having adaptive triggers enabled or disabled.
ziml77··on Uv overtakes pip in CI
It really is!

I switched to using uv just 2 weeks ago. Previously I had been dealing with maintaining a ton of batch jobs that used: global packages (yes, sudo pip install), manually managed virtualenvs, and docker containers.

uv beats all of them easily. Automatically handling the virtualenv means running a project that uses uv feels as easy as invoking the system Python is.

ziml77··on Modern Linux tools
I think that's because it's super common to use cat to quickly view a file. It has the nice property of using your terminal's scrollback rather than putting you into a pager application. For that use-case it is an alternative to cat.

That said, I've never really cared much about missing syntax highlighting for cases where I'm viewing file contents with cat. So the tool doesn't really serve a purpose for me and instead I'll continue to load up vim/neovim if I want to view a file with syntax highlighting.

All you have to do is choose Set Up Later when presented with the screen for logging in with an Apple account.
ziml77··on Does our “need for speed” make our wi-fi suck?
Can confirm on the gigabit because I've got my gigabit internet running over old phone line right now. I'm not sure exactly how long the run is, but it goes to this floor's electrical room where the ONT is housed into a closet in my apartment where it's then spliced into CAT-5 to reach the router. I really didn't expect it to work but speed tests report that I'm getting 900+ Mbps.
ziml77··on AV2 video codec delivers 30% lower bitrate than AV1, final spec due in late 2025
Not to mention that the codec barely tells you anything useful on its own. There are many parameters that affect the quality and file size. And heck it's not even guaranteed that you will be able to watch a video just given its codec. Like an old computer might be able to decode H.264 but only be able to do it in real-time at 480p due to processing requirements for going higher than that.
ziml77··on LLMs are mortally terrified of exceptions
Aaaand there we go. I literally just ran into a problem with code someone had used AI to write which does this log and continue nonsense. Process spent 30 minutes looping through API requests and failing to persist the response on every single one because of a permission error. But the only indication of a problem is the errors in the log, the process finished with a successful exit code.
ziml77··on LLMs are mortally terrified of exceptions
That's funny but definitely not far off from reality. I have instructions from my agent to use exceptions but they only help so much.

I really dislike their underuse of exceptions. I'm working on ETL/ELT scripts. Just let stuff blow up on me if something is wrong. Like, that config entry "foo" is required. There's no point in using config.get("foo") with a None check which then prints a message and returns False or whatever. Just use config["foo"] and I'll know what's wrong from the stack trace and exception text.

ziml77··on Why Self-Host?
Why doesn't it matter? A VPS is still someone else's computer. They could be monitoring what you're doing on there because they run the hypervisor and they have physical access.

I wouldn't be surprised. They probably have like .com, .net, .org, .gov, .edu and maybe some ccTLDs hardcoded.
ziml77··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
Pop_OS is the one I will likely settle on once Cosmic is out of beta.

I will say I don't' have a strong opinion on Snap vs Flatpak, but I didn't know that about the CEO's hiring practices. Definitely not interested in touching Ubuntu again after reading some first-hand accounts of his behavior.

ziml77··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
I knew someone was going to reply about it being a hardware thing. Ubuntu was listed on Framework's compatibility page as being fully supported. And the hardware was not particularly special or cutting edge. Also, the installer is STILL bugged even with 25.10. Not crashing, but if you connect to WiFi in the installer, when you click next it sits the indefinitely waiting for it to connect even after you can see in the system tray that it's connected.

And I tried Fedora at the time but, if I remember correctly, that was the distro that wouldn't load the fingerprint sensor settings page.

ziml77··on Become unbannable from your email
Mine is me@[fullname].[tld] and I still kind of regret it because no one expects such a short set of characters before the @ sign. Even many websites don't. It's never been rejected but rather it breaks basic personal details masking. Because they often mask an email address replacing all but the first and last characters of the username portion with asterisks and leaving the domain fully exposed...

Not to mention that I've been told by a couple people that they find it to be an awkward email address. Sending to "me" from their perspective should mean sending to themselves.

ziml77··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
I ran into a bug about a year ago with the Ubuntu installer that caused it to crash on me when I was trying to install it on my Framework laptop. I had to try multiple times before the install finally went through.
ziml77··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
I've always set up with a local account as long as it's been possible. Not because I don't want a Microsoft account linked (I always end up linking one after installation) but because they don't let me choose my god damned username! I want my user folder to be C:\Users\[FirstName] but for some stupid reason they don't give me the option to do that! It just creates a name automatically based on the account email address.

If they're going to completely remove the option to create a local account, could they at least let me override the local username for the account?

ziml77··on In C++ modules globally unique module names seem to be unavoidable
Using a header file for kdb+ was great fun with its short macro and function names causing all sorts of weird breaks.
ziml77··on Why the end of support for Windows 10 is uniquely troubling
Let's say it was true. What does it even mean for users? macOS was on version 10 for something like 20 years. There were big changes in that time and compatibility for older hardware was dropped along the way.

Version numbers like this are arbitrary. They could have released Windows 11 as Windows 10 21H2 and it would have changed nothing about the scenario where some people can't update and their version would stop receiving security updates.

ziml77··on How I block all 26M of your curl requests
Your code emits a compiler warning about casting an integer to a pointer. Changing the cast to void* emits a slightly different warning about the size of integer being cast to a pointer being smaller than the pointer type. Casting to a long and then a void* avoids both of these warnings.
ziml77··on Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol
Who? Those of us who were paying attention to how tech companies have operated for the past 25 years.

They start out subsidized by investors and then once they have enough users and can no longer pay for them with the invested cash, they push more and more ads onto users.

And it was easy to see that LLMs are an especially devious place the inject ads because they can flow right into the the response and not even look like an ad, but rather feel like a casual recommendation.

ziml77··on Cleaning house in Nx monorepo, how i removed unused deps safely
I assure you that hearing "pin you dependencies" is not why people create a requirements file using pip freeze. It's simply because that has long been how people have said to generate a requirements file, because Python spent much of its life lacking proper project dependency management.

And now it's extremely hard to get people to stop. There's so much info out there on the internet that says to use pip freeze that people are going to continue to run into and continue to learn to use.

ziml77··on When I say “alphabetical order”, I mean “alphabetical order”
Nah that's not just you. That is an unnatural way to sort things because that's not how numbers are ordered. I remember when Windows changed to sorting numbers by their value and, despite my programmer brain finding it strange in a way, I was super happy to have files display in an order that actually made sense.
ziml77··on A Postmark backdoor that’s downloading emails
Multiple "it's not X, it's Y" and weirdly heavy use of dashes (it looks like the person who posted this did a find-and-replace to turn em-dashes into hyphens to try to mask that).

That said, I didn't find this one too bad. I could be wrong but it feels to me like the author had already written this out in their own words and then had the AI do a rewrite from that.

ziml77··on Thoughts on Mechanical Keyboards and the ZSA Moonlander
I just like how everything aligns on my desk better (in terms of comfort) with a TKL board. And I was never a numpad user anyway. Maybe if I was typing numbers into spreadsheets all day I would have a different opinion on the necessity of the numpad
