ziml77··on Bazzite Post-Mortem
It's silly to reduce all issues like this to just pointless drama between people. It affects the product, especially if key people are pushed out. From the sounds of it, the person left running the show has already made a bunch of bad decisions (as I already commented on I ran into one of the issues caused by those bad decisions).
ziml77··on Bazzite Post-Mortem
I went with CachyOS. It's based off of Arch and compiles packages with flags for more modern CPUs. They also build extra packages that aren't normally provided by Arch (always nice to rely a little less on the AUR). And their default scheduler is supposed to provide a smoother gaming experience, though they have a selection of schedulers if you don't like that one.
ziml77··on Bazzite Post-Mortem
Glad I decided not to stick with Bazzite. I gave it a try a few months ago and had issues with Bazaar crashing (not at all low end hardware btw). If the primary method to install software was that broken on a fresh install, there was no way I was going to trust the OS at all, no matter how many people on YouTube and HN talked about how amazing it is.
ziml77··on Discord Alternatives, Ranked
If an option doesn't have that then it's not a Discord alternative for me or many of my friends.
ziml77··on UEFI Bindings for JavaScript
That's an en-dash. You want to also hold shift to make it an em-dash.
ziml77··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
There's also people who have been through enough of these moves and community splits that they're incredibly tired of it all.
ziml77··on Stop Using Face ID
The worst for me is when I am prompted to re-enter my password manager's master password. Trying to keep that out of view while entering all those characters is difficult and nerve wracking.
ziml77··on Adobe Animate will be discontinued
> "in a year we'll quietly stop any work on it anyway"

Exactly what my guess about this is too. People who rely on Animate shouldn't rest easy just because Adobe backed off this time.

ziml77··on FBI couldn't get into WaPo reporter's iPhone because Lockdown Mode enabled
The phone network already needs to know where your phone is to be able to route incoming calls.

Also, I don't get how the situation with your home internet connection changes much. Your ISP knows exactly where you are because your house doesn't move.

ziml77··on Claude is a space to think
> But inconsistency isn't a surprise for anyone who actually knows how LLMs work

Exactly. These people saying they've gotten good results for the same question aren't countering your argument. All they're doing is proving that sometimes it can output good results. But a tool that's randomly right or wrong is not a very useful one. You can't trust any of its output unless you can validate it. And for a lot of the questions people ask of it, if you have to validate it, there was no reason to use the LLM in the first place.

ziml77··on Show HN: Ghidra MCP Server – 110 tools for AI-assisted reverse engineering
I've had no issues with Claude refusing the few times I've done it. But I also remember I phrased things in a sort of way to make sure it didn't sound shady.

I suspect if I asked it to crack DRM or help me make a cheat for an online game, it would probably have refused. Or maybe it wouldn't have cared, I was just not interested in testing that and risking ending up banned from using Claude.

ziml77··on Notepad++ supply chain attack breakdown
I'd say it's more true on Linux that malware can hide anywhere if you allow a sudo prompt (which people have been unfortunately been trained is normal when installing software).

Windows enforces driver signing and has a deeper access control system that means a root account doesn't even truly exist. The SYSTEM pseudo-account looks like it should be that, but you can actually set up ACLs that make files untouchable by it. In fact if you check the files in System32, they are only writable by TrustedInstaller. A user's administrative token and SYSTEM have no access those files.

But when it comes down to it, I wouldn't trust any system that has had malware on it. At the very least I'd do a complete reinstall. It might even be worth re-flashing the firmware of all components of the system too, but the chances of those also being infected are lower as long as signed firmware is required.

ziml77··on Notepad++ supply chain attack breakdown
The Microsoft store would have needed proper vetting and support for normal desktop apps from day 1 for it to actually have been a good option. Also, not requiring the system be set up with an online account would have been helpful for adoption.

I can't say it would have guaranteed people would have liked it, just that those were needed for it to have a chance.

ziml77··on The TSA's New $45 Fee to Fly Without ID Is Illegal
I renewed mine in May and still have a non-Real ID license.
ziml77··on The TSA's New $45 Fee to Fly Without ID Is Illegal
I think the question here is, which laws?
ziml77··on Show HN: Wikipedia as a doomscrollable social media feed
It's incredible how rude and entitled people are about a toy site. It's like they are looking for any reason to take a shit all over it.

You did a great job and I love hearing that you did it all by hand in a day rather than having AI make it for you.

ziml77··on In praise of –dry-run
This is why I end up creating an interface for the calls that perform modifications. Then I have one implementation that logs and one implementation that does the actual work. I end up with the output being as representative as possible as to what would happen. I also feel a lot more comfortable that a dry run truly won't write anything when the only class that could ever actually write anything is not even instantiated in dry run mode. I don't get that same comfort when there's a ton of branches sprinkled throughout checking for a dry run flag.
ziml77··on Nvidia's 10-year effort to make the Shield TV the most updated Android device
> can play Dolby Vision Profile 7 FEL

This is the only reason I know about this Ugoos device. I find it so strange that Profile 7 is effectively unsupported outside of Blu-ray players and this one device. It doesn't even seem like it can be a processing power issue because the documentation says that the other profiles have higher maximum pixel rates.

I don't have the Ugoos box myself though. Instead I'm running a series of processing steps on my Blu-ray rips which converts the file to Profile 8. For every movie I've tried so far this has been fine, though I've read that some movies lean far too heavily on the FEL and have color problems without it.

ziml77··on GOG: Linux "the next major frontier" for gaming as it works on a native client
When I played Hollow Knight some years ago on my Steam Deck, I had to switch to the Windows version under Proton because the Linux native version was giving me random graphical glitches that made it impossible to see what was going on until I moved to a different screen and came back.
ziml77··on Vitamin D supplements cut heart attack risk by 52%. Why?
Is this actually real? I don't see any link to a study. The use of AI has me suspect, as does visiting the main page of the site and seeing: "A 365º view of your heart health" I guess that could be intentional but it comes off as someone mistaking days in a year with degrees in a circle.
ziml77··on A judge gave the FBI permission to attempt to bypass biometrics
It shouldn't be different. But law enforcement wants access and everyone who could reign them in seems to also want them to have access. Honestly it's surprising at this point they haven't argued that people can be compelled to give up their password using whatever means necessary.
ziml77··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
They still look great on a rainy November day. A nice cozy, quiet vibe.
ziml77··on Microsoft 365 now tracks you in real time?
This actually seem quite flag-worthy to me. Look at the rest of the site, it's not at all trustworthy. The first post says it's by some random 16 year old (if we can actually believe that) and only has a few posts. One of them is a comparison of smart watches which says they tested them in the subheading on the article listing, but then doesn't show anything more than a surface level comparison from AI.
ziml77··on Retiring GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini in ChatGPT
What kind of "training" did you do?
ziml77··on C++ Modules Are Here to Stay
I would think they don't want to hear that because of how badly they want modules to happen. Don't kill their hope!
ziml77··on Please don't say mean things about the AI I just invested a billion dollars in
Human time estimates are bad, but the ones that AI gives are just absurd. I've seen them used from small things like planning interviews and short presentations, all the way up to large scale projects. In no case do they make any sense to me. But I think people end up trusting them because they look so confident and well planned due to how the AIs break things down.
ziml77··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
There actually is an installer for arch. I haven't tried it myself, but there should be an application included on the ISO called archinstall which helps with basically everything that's part of the install guide on the Arch wiki.
ziml77··on Show HN: Bonsplit – Tabs and splits for native macOS apps
You're not the only one. I first assumed it was a library when I was scanning the headlines, but then when I started opening up tabs moments later I thought it added tabs and splits to existing apps. I remember something that brought tabs system-wide to Windows so it's not even too crazy of an idea.
ziml77··on I don't write code anymore – I sculpt it
The title alone was enough for me to suspect exactly what I'd see. A post praising AI, written by AI.
ziml77··on Bye Bye Gmail
Seconding Fastmail here.

Microsoft is an insane choice, just look at what they've done with Windows and their Office suite.
