ziml77··on Notepad++ for Mac – Independent community port
Oh for sure. Just look at the "Author" page. It says he started in March 2026 on this. Which means last month he pointed Claude to the Notepad++ repo and said "make a native port of this to macOS".
ziml77··on Quirks of Human Anatomy
Yes, don't give a crap about doing it right so all your costs instead move into support and maintenance (which in this analogy is healthcare)
ziml77··on What async promised and what it delivered
Yep and I loved when C# introduced it. I worked on a system in C# that predated async/await and had to use callbacks to make the asynchronous code work. It was a mess of overnested code and poor exception handling, since once the code did asynchronous work the call stack became disconnected from where the try-catches could take care of them. async/await allowed me to easily make the code read and function like equivalent synchronous code.
ziml77··on New 10 GbE USB adapters are cooler, smaller, cheaper
Right, but if it's not actually USB-C, at best you're looking at the device not working when plugged into a proper USB-C power supply. At worst you're facing fried electronics.
ziml77··on New 10 GbE USB adapters are cooler, smaller, cheaper
Ah that's a fun misuse of USB ports. The companies will often even dodge issues with the USB-IF by labeling the ports as Type C and letting the customer's mind fill in the word USB.

I wish these devices would just use barrel jacks, labeled with the voltage and polarity. But these manufacturers know that the USB-C port weighs into buying decisions (and they know that most people have zero clue about the difference between a physical port and the electrical/protocol specs).

ziml77··on New 10 GbE USB adapters are cooler, smaller, cheaper
I can't tell if this is a trick question that has something to do with a quirk of USB running multiple lanes in parallel to get higher speeds.

Because if not then it's the same as any specification for connecting devices that allows for multiple speeds. It runs at the lowest of the max speeds supported of everything in the chain.

ziml77··on Ubuntu 26.04
Hasn't there been reporting recently that Debian development is struggling with a lack of maintainers?
ziml77··on Ubuntu 26.04
That's what some people love about it. Gives them 2 clipboards. Personally I think copying into a shared space without an explicit action to do so is terrible from a security perspective, so getting rid of middle click paste by default is good to me.
ziml77··on OpenAI releases GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro in the API
It's just too bad the subsidized costs mean they won't actually feel any real punishment for their failure. Like normally time wasted on its own is enough of a punishment for making a poor decision, but they're not even doing anything themselves here!
ziml77··on Habitual coffee intake shapes the microbiome, modifies physiology and cognition
I also don't find that caffeine wakes me up or keeps me alert. I used to have it a ton because I like the taste but then mostly stopped because I was having some anxiety issues and wanted to be sure caffeine wasn't a factor. Stopping it was zero problem at all for me, which doesn't align with what others say about stopping consumption. I don't know if my body's metabolism of it is super fast or if my brain is weird in some undiagnosed way that prevents the caffeine from working "correctly"
ziml77··on Habitual coffee intake shapes the microbiome, modifies physiology and cognition
One early in the morning, one maybe a bit before lunch, and one in the afternoon. Doesn't seem too out there. And you probably approach 5 cups if you're normalizing the size of a cup and seeing that people generally get bigger cups than that (I'd imagine one large cup in the morning and another in the afternoon would easily put you at 5 for the purposes of the study)

You don't have to be smart to be elected. You have to be a good liar. And it's really easy to be a good liar when you have gotten so deep into bullshitting that you believe your own lies.

Also, being useful to the right people helps. Because they will dump their own money and time into bolstering your campaign.

ziml77··on DeepSeek v4
Any incidents of looting or fires? The protests were just an excuse for people to steal and destroy. Nothing bad happens? The protest was just a cute little parade.

They just come up with excuses to dismiss protests because it's inconvenient to even consider that the protesters concerns are valid and need to be addressed by making actual changes.

ziml77··on GPT-5.5
I agree. Given that there's only a single dragon type evolutionary line in gen 1 and that it's the last in the Pokedex before Mewtwo, I suspect dragon wasn't even one of their possible types when they designed Gyarados.
ziml77··on GPT-5.5
Gyarados is a flying type but I think it may be accurate that it can't actually fly. The only flying moves it can learn in any generation are Hurricane and Bounce (Bounce does send the user up into the air for a turn but the implication is that they've trampolined up extremely high rather than used wings to ascend)
ziml77··on Spam in conversational replies to blog posts
I wonder if people are finally catching on. I feel like I hear less of "I add 'reddit' to all my searches" than I used to.

The reliability of reddit comments has been questionable even before LLMs. Because people trying to push whatever they are interested in pushing realized that having organic-looking comments is the perfect way to sway people who don't trust professional publications and traditional ads. And now with LLMs in the mix, there's basically not even a cost to doing this and making it look like tons of people love your product and are sharing their friendly thoughts and advice.

ziml77··on The Onion to Take over InfoWars
Seriously, the reporting on that was so terribly biased that many people still think it was a frivolous lawsuit.
ziml77··on GitHub's fake star economy
Interesting that 5 years ago is exactly when this page showed up according to the Wayback Machine: https://docs.github.com/en/get-started/exploring-projects-on...

In it they explicitly call it out as a ranking metric

> Many of GitHub's repository rankings depend on the number of stars a repository has. In addition, Explore GitHub shows popular repositories based on the number of stars they have.

Yet another case of metric -> target -> useless metric

ziml77··on Turtle WoW classic server announces shutdown after Blizzard wins injunction
I found it very unfun. You end up in dungeons with a subset of the abilities you're used to. It felt especially bad, when leveling, if I queued for a random dungeon and got into a lower level one shortly after acquiring a new ability.

Don't forget the 4th way they get screwed which that the AI trained on the books is spitting out a flood of new books that push the real authors out.
ziml77··on Claude Design
I think they understand that the people running businesses are going to look at this vs a human who uses Figma and realize how much more cost and time efficient it is to pay for a machine than a human.
ziml77··on An Introduction to Obsidian
Obsidian shows a warning about this. But the only issue it's pointing out is that mixing Obsidian's built-in sync with something that syncs your files is likely to cause problems. Otherwise it's a perfectly safe and normal way to sync.
ziml77··on Tell HN: OpenAI silently removed Study Mode from ChatGPT
It seems to help. But it's just one factor. I also have a lot of subscriptions to help guide the algorithm. And it seems most heavily weighted on things you've recently watched, so if you ever leave youtube playing while you're not actually watching it, you might need to manually remove videos from your watch history that don't align with what you want to see suggested.

How can people ever discuss something in public fora if spoilers have to be eternally avoided? Keep in mind, people often disagree on what even crosses the line into being a spoiler.
ziml77··on Show HN: boringBar – a taskbar-style dock replacement for macOS
I'm with other people here. Make this a one-time purchase. If a major macOS update requires significant changes to keep the program working, make that a new version that people need to buy. A pretty standard way to keep people from feeling screwed if the break happens right after they bought your software is to give them the next version of your software for free if you release it within 1 year of their purchase.

I think you're actually likely to make more money that way because people will pass on adding yet another subscription to the pile they have already.

ziml77··on OpenClaw’s memory is unreliable, and you don’t know when it will break
The AI for everything thinking is really easy to let infect you. I was trying to figure out how to make some SQL alerting easier to understand quickly. The first thing my brain went to was "oh just shove it into an LLM to pull out the info of what the query is doing". And it unfortunately wasn't until after I said that out loud that I realized that was a stupid idea when you could just run a SQL parser over the query and pull the table names out that way. Far faster, more cost effective, and reliable than asking an LLM to do it.
ziml77··on Rockstar Games Hacked, Hackers Threaten a Massive Data Leak If Not Paid Ransom
Snowflake is typically used for data analytics in my experience. It's going to have financial stuff very likely, but not like raw documents. Definitely not source code.

I mean technically you can stuff documents into a column with the BINARY datatype provided they are under 67 MB each, but it's not really meant to be used as a document store.

ziml77··on CPU-Z and HWMonitor compromised
"Fix for a critical issue when querying the CPU that could lead to data corruption in other processes executing at the same time"

Or, "hey ChatGPT generate me a changelog for updates and fixes I could make to the software CPU-Z"

Expecting a more detailed changelog doesn't help at all

(I'm not even sure you'd need to prompt an LLM around guardrails like I did here, it would probably happily spit out a fake changelog even if you were explicit about it not being real as long as you don't tell the LLM you're planning to trick people with malware)
