> it will kill the card from IO cycles.

It might not. I have a Raspberry Pi 2 that has been running a weather station for over 12 years, and it has been on the original SD card. I have other RPi's doing dumb things around the house and I have never had an SD card failure.

YMMV and all that.

Yes, I am very familiar with zbarimg and qrencode. But, other people might not be, and that's why just scanning a QR code works. Not everyone has Bitwarden, 1Password, Pass, keepass, etc.... also these tools may not be approved by your security teams.

And we are talking about the root account for your production AWS account. No need to get fancy. Just print the QR code, and put it in a safe hoping you never need it.

zikduruqe··on Bucketsquatting is finally dead
You print the MFA QR code, and give it to an executive that locks it up in a safe or offsite storage.

In a past life, we printed the MFA QR code and the head of finance put it into a safe.

zikduruqe··on The new Apple begins to emerge
> Do people like the Macbook Neo?

People have been begging for MacOS on the iPad... and here it is, but in different clothing. The Neo is just a test bed before committing MacOS to the iPad.

And easily demonstrable when meeting someone in a social setting:

"Hi, what's your name?"

Then the very next question: "What do you do for a living?"

Heh. I mean you are kinda close.

My callsign is a 2x1 call.

zikduruqe··on Ask HN: How many of you hold an amateur radio license in your country?
I hold an Extra Class license... the old 20 wpm kind. The cool thing is, I got my extra back when I was 19 years old and it set me up for a great tech career since I understood RF.

Not going to dox myself here putting my callsign in a post.

> How did people manage this prior to 2007?

You just looked at a map. People used to be good at looking at maps, and remembering cardinal directions prior to GPS units. We have unfortunately lost that sense of natural direction.

zikduruqe··on Motorola GrapheneOS devices will be bootloader unlockable/relockable
I was secretly hoping Framework would have produced a phone that would collaborate with GrapheneOS. I know it is a stretch, but one can dream.

> I would love to have a phone that has an active AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon SIM at the same time.

If you are not aware, US Mobile offers a Super Carrier package that one account can use all three. https://www.usmobile.com/networks

I don't use them, only read about it on r/nocontract.

Same here. I have tried my dangedest to want to need an iPad. Once the new wears off, I just cannot find a use for them.

This. I seldom leave the house with an iPhone, and my Apple Watch with cellular is my primary "mobile" device. I want to leave the Apple ecosystem as my devices age out, and the one thing I would love to have is an NFC ring or bracelet to replace my Apple Watch.

I dunno. I have an arch installation that is maybe 4 years old, I might update every few weeks, and have only had one issue.

Any issues are usually on the front page of archlinux.org what the issue is, and how to fix it.

zikduruqe··on Raspberry Pi Drag Race: Pi 1 to Pi 5 – Performance Comparison
As a fun weekend project in 2013, I stood up a weather station using Weewx and my RPI 2 with 1 GB RAM. I told myself if it ever crashes or the SD card gets corrupted, I'll just tear everything down.

Well, it's still running today on the original SD card. At noon today it processed its 1,055,425th record in the database.

Still, if it ever crashes, I'll just tear it down. :)

I usually ask if they poop with the door closed. We all know what you are doing in there, and we do the same thing. No need to hide.

Or, why do you get your mail in an envelope? I can see that it is your financial statements.

Why do you have curtains on your home? I can go to Zillow and see the interior of your house from years ago.

zikduruqe··on I'm a laptop weirdo and that's why I like my new Framework 13
I have Home Assistant running on an old Raspberry Pi and it is fabulous. Way quicker than HomeKit, and easier to tinker with, along with all kinds of integrations.
zikduruqe··on I'm a laptop weirdo and that's why I like my new Framework 13
> I love my M1 Pro MacBook and I wish I could have the same efficiency when running Linux but I can't.

No doubt. And don't forget Apple nailed the trackpad experience too. But I seldom need to use my laptop for 20 hours away from an A/C outlet. It's nice, but not necessary for me.

With that being said, I personally am going to start abandoning the Apple ecosystem with each device that NEEDS to be replaced. I'm tired of features being forced into each software cycle, and I don't want any AI on my devices.

I'm going to lean into Framework (or keep my old T480 alive) and GrapheneOS when needed.

zikduruqe··on I'm a laptop weirdo and that's why I like my new Framework 13
> Framework starts so far behind in performance ...

Honest question and not meant to flame anyone. What benchmark are you referring to regarding performance; spec sheets or your tools are not working correctly or working slowly?

Just trying to understand users needs in upgrading. I have some new MacBooks and some old linux laptops. They both equally work just fine for what I need to do, and I am starting to question the need for me to update to a new MacBook M* chipset moving forward.

Crazy invasive. Guess they want to see how far you drive and what route you get to get there.

It's best to get your order code, leave your phone at home and just pull up and say "I have order EM14..."
