zigzaggy··on US Department of Justice Argues Assange Has No First Amendment Rights
This question has been debated and discussed often, especially since the “wars” on drugs and terror (with similar results). The truth is that the constitution protects all people in MOST cases, but not all. (0) It’s a complex answer and, as someone else mentioned, things change by case law (court decisions) all the time.

Note that if someone is being charged as some type of combatant or intelligence operative, they will have very few “rights” and apparently can be held for a very long time (see Gitmo).

zigzaggy··on ADHD, a Lifelong Struggle (2018)
So strange that I have said almost exactly these words. The characteristics that we depended on for survival as hunters now make life difficult in the middle class.

My theory extends to my desire for action and my risk taking behavior as a younger person.

zigzaggy··on Ask HN: What were your most impactful podcast episodes from 2019?
I also recommend Jocko podcast. I’ve truly enjoyed the perception shift of leadership and discipline.
zigzaggy··on Haters
Exactly. My site, my world, my rules. It’s been my approach too. I don’t respond or acknowledge them. Delete and move on.
zigzaggy··on The Best Hike in Every State (2019)
For Alabama, there are plenty of beautiful hikes. Rivers: Coosa, Cahaba, Tennessee, Paint Rock, Elk; Mountains: Cheaha, Noccalula, Oak Mountain, Monte Sano, Red Mountain; Beaches: Gulf State Park, Daphne, Orange Beach; ;Lakes: Guntersville, Perry Lakes, Lake Martin. We have waterfalls, rock climbing, and canoeing too - which always involve hiking when I go!

Like any other state, Alabama can most certainly not be filtered down into a "best of" list, because we're all from different parts.

I imagine writing about the great outdoors is a challenge. There's nothing like the real thing!

zigzaggy··on The Best Hike in Every State (2019)
Pretty much my thoughts too. Conversation starter at best, listicle at worst. Worked on us though!
zigzaggy··on Loudness war
Came here to post this. One of my favorite podcasts! Highly recommended
zigzaggy··on How to start a blog using Hugo
I also follow Perell and find him inspiring. Writing is a lifelong passion but since a big part of my work is writing, the flame has gone out. These days is all about relighting the fire.
zigzaggy··on Ask HN: What niche blogs are worthwhile to follow?
Thanks for the rabbit hole! Spend a few hours on this blog and his recommendations... and then theirs.
zigzaggy··on The Doors of Perception (1954) [pdf]
Brings back memories of the college days... not a single care in the world but expanding horizons.
zigzaggy··on Opening Black Boxes and Creating a Personal Knowledge Base
I just started using a combination of Pocket (on iOS) and Worldbrain Memex (on desktop). I also have my Pocket merging with Memex on a regular basis so I can ultimately have it all in one place.
zigzaggy··on Someone found a way to bypass Windows 7 Extended Security Updates checks
You may already know this, but you can set up an “offline account” that’s not connected to an online account and then delete the one you connected online. All my Win10 machines have offline-only accounts.
zigzaggy··on Proxmox VE 6.1 – Open-Source virtualization platform
Just set up Proxmox on my home lab last week. I’m slowly ramping up the learning curve. Sounds like I made the right choice.
zigzaggy··on I Ditched Google for DuckDuckGo
I don’t remember it redirecting. But I forget the past all the time.
zigzaggy··on I Ditched Google for DuckDuckGo
So it does. My mistake. Haven’t used the bang feature in a long time.

Either way, I use DDG by default on all my devices. I support as many companies as I can that don’t sell my data.

zigzaggy··on AWS DeepComposer
Two of my greatest passions, with the result of learning more about ML. Sign me up!
zigzaggy··on I Ditched Google for DuckDuckGo
Not if privacy is your end goal.
zigzaggy··on I Ditched Google for DuckDuckGo
Ha. Yes it sounds ridiculous on it’s face. But... It’s the privacy thing I’m concerned about. If google the tool was all Google is, then I’d have no problem with it. It’s the rest of Google I have an issue with.

I can bang google the tool along with wiki or whatever and still avoid the invasive practices the company uses. I don’t think that’s a complicated concept.

zigzaggy··on I Ditched Google for DuckDuckGo
My thoughts exactly. I always hear these complaints but I never have an issue. If I’m going technical I’ll use the bang feature (! g) and I’m all set. I’m not going back to ggle
zigzaggy··on PIA VPN to be acquired by malware company founded by former Israeli spy
I disagree with a couple of things.

First of all, you missed one thing that is really one of my primary concerns. I hate the idea of my ISP working with other ad surveillance companies to track and sell MY data about mine and my family’s and friends’ online activities.

Having a VPN stops that part of the surveillance machinery from working as intended. Combining that with pihole and other tools allows me to disrupt (at least a little bit) the business of the internet that I hate so much.

Also, Tor and other tools (all part of the same solution above) address #2 to the degree I need it addressed. And I am currently not worried about #3, but with the decentralization of streaming services, it won’t be long now.

zigzaggy··on PIA VPN to be acquired by malware company founded by former Israeli spy
Good point, thank you. Because of my use case, this isn’t an issue. But I understand we all have different models and should act accordingly.
zigzaggy··on PIA VPN to be acquired by malware company founded by former Israeli spy
Whether this is true or not isn’t really the point. The fact that it it’s even possible is a huge red flag for my use case / threat model.

It’s relatively easy, not to mention cheap (less than $10 per month) to spin up a streisand (0) instance and protect myself that way. As long as I keep my traffic encrypted, I can keep most / all of the vultures away that I’m concerned about.

Happy to walk anyone through it. Takes less than 30 minutes and it just works.

Edited to add link. Second edit to change reference # typo.

zigzaggy··on Smart TVs like Samsung, LG and Roku are tracking everything
Can I flash my own router with pcWRT or do I have to purchase one on Amazon? Is this similar to DDWRT? Or a fork of some open source project?
zigzaggy··on Cherokees divided: The acrimony between two 19th century tribal leaders
My wife is a Cherokee historian / genealogist, and I have always enjoyed the details of her stories. The history of the Cherokee is fascinating and full of rich history! Thank you for posting this. I sent it to her for a more intelligent response :)
zigzaggy··on I Tried Market Prediction with Machine Learning
Thanks for this. I still want to try, even if it does fail. Sounds like my idea of a very good time.
zigzaggy··on Why are people getting worse at “The Price Is Right”?
For the most entertaining version of the answer, watch this really cool movie (1) with math, intrigue, and daytime television all rolled into one. It’s called The Perfect Bid. (Not affiliated just a fan.) I think I watched it on Amazon or Netflix.

zigzaggy··on Bad Binder: Android In-the-Wild Exploit
According to recent articles I’ve read this may not be the case. Apparently at least one organization has accused NSO of doing the unlawful accessing.

Standby while I look for a source.

zigzaggy··on Pwn the ESP32 Forever: Flash Encryption and SEC. Boot Keys Extraction
This is how I handle all the IoT devices in my household. It’s one of the first things I implemented after I flashed my router over to DDWRT.
zigzaggy··on How to run your own mail server (2017)
So if I bought my “name.rocks” I’ll have trouble using that as an email? I was looking forward to “firstname@lastname.rocks” and I never even considered it would be a problem. I’m disappointed
zigzaggy··on Show HN: 400-Line Binance CryptoCurrency Bot
