zheng··on Apple's Not Fond of Brunettes
I'm not trying to be snarky, but apparently they don't care that much if they can't handle working with developers about an issue as simple as this. Even just telling them "We have decided not to reinstate your app, sorry" would be better than what they are doing.
zheng··on Kid Automates Work, Is Fired, Hired Back, Automates Business
Not really. I'm the most junior person in my department and I can get a new chair if I want one. Big company too.
zheng··on Jeff Bezos Taught Me When to Quit
To be fair (and like others have said re: Amazon), this sounds pretty particular to a specific team. In other teams, it's pretty clear what you have to do in order to get promoted. I overheard from some employees that at the last meeting they had on the subject, management was very straightforward, saying that they had X spots available and Y people to consider. If you did the right things, they would consider you, and promote the best X people. I think this approach is about as good as it can be in a large org.
zheng··on Peity - Little charts for little projects
So let's say I don't care about compatibility, what is the real differences between Peity and jQuery sparklines?
zheng··on NPR Intern Gets an Earful After Blogging About 11,000 Songs
Here's my issues with this line of thought. For one, why is 99c considered "reasonable" for a song? I feel as though this price point has little to do with the economics of the song-making business and a lot to do with the economics of iTunes/etc. Secondly, what is "convenient"? Why is iTunes downloading convenient, but watching GoT on HBO's online service not? I'm not saying they are equal, I think iTunes is easier, but why does the line fall in between them? Basically, the writer in question thinks the line still falls on the other side of iTunes, so why does that make their behavior disgraceful?
zheng··on Hacker Workspaces
I have a 13" MBA, and the reason I chose it over the pro is that it has an SSD. I've killed hard drives before thanks to them not sleeping when I shut my lid. But I can't do real work on it for long periods of time, I need my dual monitors.
zheng··on Samsung Announces TecTiles, Brings Programmable NFC Tags to the Masses
Its things like this that will hopefully continue the push of automation in general society. We as hackers have long seen the power in automation, but the general public sees a computer as something that is powerful, but adds complexity to their life. Apple does a great job at fighting this image that technology == complexity, and that's part of why they are successful, IMHO. I just can't wait until the real wave of automation hits the general market with force.
zheng··on Aging Microsoft lures young tech idealists
I can't speak for the grandparent, but I've encountered zero of the famous mindset here. There is a definite competitive nature, but customer needs, not business rivals, are what are pushed to even the lowest devs. I'm working on something that is pretty much an internal tool, but the level of emphasis of being able to use it for modeling the needs of real customers is quite high.
zheng··on Aging Microsoft lures young tech idealists
I can't say what the best way to apply is, but if you send me your email (see profile) and optionally a link or description of what you've done/what you are interested in, I'd be happy to pass it on to a recruiter.
zheng··on SIMD, SIMT, SMT - parallelism in NVIDIA GPUs
A very good and reasonably approachable discussion of the pros and cons of how CUDA programming actually is realized in hardware. The explanation of how the GPU's handle context switching is particularly thoughtful and enlightening. It took me a long time to figure this out a couple months ago, a guide like this would have saved me a few nights.

I was surprised that the author didn't once use the term CUDA though, they even discuss actual syntax from it, but don't mention the language (extension) once.

zheng··on Windows Azure Dance Routine
FWIW, there was a lot of internal outrage over this yesterday. I even saw a public message to marketing asking them to please put a stop to any other items like this that were planned.
zheng··on GoToMeeting uses competitor’s name in search ads to trick people
Slight tangent, but I searched "free credit report" and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. What should I be taking note of?
zheng··on A VC-funded startup called WhosHere is trying to steal my social network
I think so, although there is always two sides of the story, so I would reserve judgement for the next couple days.
zheng··on Gunshot detection system transforms and raises issues
I'm not 100% on the laws around this, but if a city was utilizing ShotSpotter, wouldn't they have to disclose the area(s) they were monitoring?
zheng··on Live: SpaceX Dragon docking with ISS
They are now looking at a capture time of ~9:40AM CT (about 90 minutes from this comment)
zheng··on Hiring the Smartest People in the World
You're probably right, although as of right now it reads "in some order", ergo there is no guarantee that i comes before i+1 for all i. It could have been updated though.
zheng··on Hiring the Smartest People in the World
The problem wasn't misstated, when they aren't in order the solution isn't obvious unless you remember a bit about sums. Most interview problems, if restricted, can either be solved very quickly, or aren't interesting anymore. Either way, as it was stated, it's a fairly common interview question as another comment has pointed out.
zheng··on ShareJS – Live concurrent editing in your app
Pasting in most of Shakespeare's works seems to have made editing non-responsive for about 30s. Pretty neat though.
zheng··on Big Data's Big Problem: Little Talent
Slightly off-topic, but your website breaks after visiting the RDMS page, as all the other links seem to be relative, so they attempt to go to pages such as /products/people.html
zheng··on Cargo Cults and Interview Questions
Thinking that all interviews which use some form of whiteboard BS are bad is just as much a cargo cult idea as the use of whiteboards.
zheng··on "Gangbang Interviews" and "Bikini Shots": Silicon Valley’s Brogrammer Problem
It started as just a joke, but I've personally seen more than one CS undergrad living out the brogrammer stereotype because they thought it was cool and was part of "startup culture". No joking involved.

That's what scares me most about the joke. Its becoming a thing because people are too naive to realize that it isn't actually the new wave of best practices from the valley.

zheng··on Dotfiles.github.com - A guide to dotfiles on GitHub
I would recommend it. I'm not fully happy yet with my setup, but it's all in bash, and fairly simple really. Plus, when you do it yourself you will understand everything you do, and be less likely to screw up something you didn't actually want changed.
zheng··on Don't Build APIs
Well, if it helps any, I've found the CUDA API to be somewhat lacking in features, but more or less robust, and pretty logical to deal with as a developer. Keep up the good work.
zheng··on You're sharing your personal data with every app
Exactly this. I don't particularly mind sharing some of my personal data with 3rd parties, especially because I actually like ads if they are for new products that I am actually interested in purchasing. However, not being able to reliably control what exactly that data is without keeping up with the latest subtle changes in wording is too much for me.
zheng··on If We Go One Attempt Every Ten Seconds, We're Under The Radar
Being the enlightened hacker that I am, I use SSH keys for all of my ssh'ing, and I know a fair number of sysadmins that require ssh keys, so I kind of thought it was more or less default nowadays. I guess I was wrong, so what is the reasoning behind allowing password access to your servers? I guess if you have a fair number of non-technical users, keys might be too hard to deal with? But scripts can make the process fairly painless. I'd be interested to hear from someone who does manage more than a couple machines.
zheng··on Netflix Recommendations: Beyond the 5 stars
I almost spit out my coffee, very well done. I have the same issue in that I set up my preferences, and told my wife (who uses it alot more but doesn't look at the recommendations much, she generally already knows what she wants to watch) to just not rate anything, so that it wouldn't be confused by my ratings. All it took was one accidental 5* on Desperate Housewives and my recommendations were shot.

It seems to me that the rating algorithm is a bit sensitive. Also, I wonder if Netflix has considered giving people they option of multiple "personalities" for the purpose of suggestions, queues, etc. I bet if they offered this for something like $3/mo more, people would pay for it.

zheng··on Poll: What is your primary operating system
Never used Ableton, but I've been dabbling in Reaper[0]. I can't make a full switch yet, but am hoping to be able to at some point in time. From the little I've seen it isn't missing anything major.

Final Cut Pro is another story, but I really don't use it very often anymore, and I'm well-versed enough in Adobe Premier that I could probably drop it.

I'm not holding my breath either, but I do dream of a world where most software is OS-independent. I guess we're closer now than we have been for a while.

EDIT: I just remembered that Reaper is Win/Mac. I hear it runs under Wine, but I'd be worried about latency there. Alas, we are captive to our tools.

zheng··on Poll: What is your primary operating system
Windows handles media much better than linux. I have a linux media server as well, and while I like it for somethings, getting Blu-Ray/DVD/MP3/CD/Netflix/etc. working in it is not one of those things. Windows just works in that sense. Also games, although this is more of a theoretical bonus as I rarely play anything.
zheng··on Poll: What is your primary operating system
I run windows, but always run a Linux VM in which I do all of my dev work, and have an OS X laptop which would be a linux laptop, but Logic/Final Cut Pro keep it that way.

Right tool for the right job, IMO.

zheng··on Charlie Stross on Girls Around Me
You must have a strange social group. I don't have a facebook, and have never once had a problem in anything but other websites wanting me to have one. When friends ask for my facebook I say I don't have one, tell them I don't like their attitude towards privacy, they find it interesting and we move on.
