zests··on The divide between political parties is smaller than we think (2020)
Do you base your opinion of each side off of what you see on the internet?

"On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog."

zests··on I'm tired of this anti-Wayland horseshit
These are evdev based tools, not wayland tools.

Personally the community around wayland seems to have some toxicity in it. That is the only thing I really took from the original post.

zests··on I'm tired of this anti-Wayland horseshit
There needs to be a better way to discover random stuff like this.
zests··on I'm tired of this anti-Wayland horseshit
I'm already on 28.x/native comp. Is this branch really tested and working well enough without any performance regressions? I read the LWN article about this branch and it did not increase my confidence.
zests··on I'm tired of this anti-Wayland horseshit
When I'm at my framebuffer terminal, I can either type 'startx' or 'sway'. If I go from typing 'startx' to typing 'sway' does that count as "switching to Wayland"?
zests··on I'm tired of this anti-Wayland horseshit
Beware writing things on the internet when you are angry.
zests··on Should I be wearing two masks?
Welcome to the outrage economy. Its great when you're on one side but sucks when you're on the other.
zests··on VideoLAN is 20 years old today
What happened internally when you discovered that you were given a false severe grade CVE? I remember seeing many articles suggesting users uninstall VLC.

zests··on Ask HN: Recommended books and papers on distributed systems?
This thread has piqued my interest. I am curious if the people interested in distributed systems are closer to hobbyists or professionals using the ideas directly in their work.

Distributed systems fans of HN, why are you reading about distributed systems?

zests··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
If you take off the linux hobbyist blinders you will see that having to type in "apk add audacity" and getting a mobile unusable interface is a non-starter for 99% of people. Compare that to the experience of typing in to a search bar that loads suggestions and gives results with pictures and ratings and descriptions.

I like the pinephone and am going to buy one myself but I'm buying it because of linux reasons, not because I actually think it will be a good daily driver.

zests··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
A walled garden is a plus for most consumers. Especially non-technical consumers who want to download something and be sure it's not spyware that will brick their phone. If you want to be able to install anything you can buy a pinephone but I can't imagine it would be fun to install anything on a pinephone.

Apple offers a walled garden as an offering to i-device users. Other companies try to mimic Apple's success. Mobile devices simply do not have the same "must be able to install anything" requirements that a standard computer has.

zests··on Parents' income, not smarts, key to entrepreneurship
I'd guess that basic income would encourage entrepreneurship in individuals with a high degree of self-actualization but not individuals with a low degree of self-actualization.

Whether or not basic income itself would increase the degree of self-actualization people have is not an easy question. It is in fact a complicated question deeply integrated with culture. I'd guess peoples opinion on this question mostly reflects their political ideology and/or support for basic income.

zests··on Parents' income, not smarts, key to entrepreneurship
Intelligence is overrated. It's one piece of the puzzle. If we look for "one factor" that's responsible for success we are going to be searching for a long time.

Income is a more robust metric because it is a somewhat natural combination of many personal characteristics.

zests··on Agent fired from literary agency for using Parler and Gab
Yes. Good question.
zests··on Heap-based buffer overflow in Sudo
How do you measure the sizes of these modules? I counted lines from source code and systemd pam code was a 1k-2k lines of C total and pam is 30k lines of C.
zests··on Heap-based buffer overflow in Sudo
sudo su

My favorite command.

zests··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
This is whataboutism. You can talk about other reasons for using firefox if you'd like (although you'd have to mention what those reasons are.) We're talking about privacy right now and firefox does not fit the bill.
zests··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
What if you change the search engine in Chrome and disable all telemetry? This is the comparison we should be making.
zests··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
Firefox sends everything you type in the address bar to google by default.

Would you be able to tell the difference between stock firefox and stock chrome if all you saw was the fiddler session? I don't know, I haven't tried. I did look at a firefox session in fiddler and I was not impressed.

Pick your poison. If you configure all the settings in firefox properly it might be acceptable. But can you just do the same in chrome? If not, you can use the privacy friendly chromium browser of your choice. Most firefox users wont take the time to configure it properly and the data will still reach the data gobbler.

Edit: an interesting comment from the other firefox thread https://news.ycombinator.com/reply?id=25916762

zests··on Google won't donate to members of Congress who voted against election results
It sounds like you are trying to point out how both sides in a two party system have similar characteristics. Unluckily for you, in the areas you are comparing both parties, I am able to find minute differences between the actions of the parties and claim that these differences are enough to negate your original comparison of said political parties.

All political discussions are the same.

zests··on Unlocking LUKS2 Volumes with TPM2, FIDO2, PKCS#11 Security HW on Systemd 248
I tinker on my gentoo box and OpenRC is more than capable of everything it needs to do. I don't understand why people's linux fill up with "trial and error custom shell scripts".

Can someone explain why non-systemd systems are claimed to be full of broken shell scripts? I've yet to experience that.

zests··on Facebook Incubated the Insurrection
Or even the HK protests. I could list many famous [protests|riots] in history and they would also make great examples.

I am not referring to any real life events.

zests··on Facebook Incubated the Insurrection
Which event are we talking about?

The ones that agree with my sensibilities are protests. The others are riots.

zests··on Facebook Incubated the Insurrection
Explain it to an engineer. A few people in a mostly peaceful protest got out of hand and this is the most frightening event ever? I'd say the congressmen shooting was 10x scarier yet received 100x less news coverage.

Just to be clear, sarcasm and unduly extreme language do not work as well on an engineer :)

zests··on Facebook Incubated the Insurrection
Yes, social media and maybe even the internet as a whole will radicalize its users. Facebook is a groupthink incubator. So is hacker news. I've witnessed many people change their political beliefs to match whichever group they belong to.
zests··on SolarWinds: What Hit Us Could Hit Others
Could the NSA just tell the rest of the government to pretend it was Russia?

It's not like any of us would know better.

zests··on A bit on scaling chess.com's database
Paying people to play chess can't be a bad thing. I prefer chess.com to lichess specifically because I support chess players by using chess.com. Streamers, tournaments, article writers...
zests··on Parler drops offline after Amazon pulls support
In this world, service providers should create TOS that are as complicated as possible so that practically every company is violating them. The terms can then be applied "as needed".
zests··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
The mega-corporations that herd people together and use their people herd to sell ad slots are not part of a democracy.
zests··on Google suspending Parler from the Google Play store
Social media is universally terrible, you might be the last one to notice.
