zero-sharp··on Hacker Leaks 3.3B Emails and Yes Every Single One Is Unique
Sure it's sloppy. But why would the title mention uniqueness if we were talking about emails?
zero-sharp··on DHH Is Right About Everything [video]
This is a two hour video. Maybe somebody can use their amazing AI technology to create a few bullet points?
zero-sharp··on AI Companions Reduce Loneliness
>You just replied to a comment in which they did not reply to you. Thus, you were not heard.

This is a weird and extremely off putting game to play. You read my post. What are you talking about?

zero-sharp··on AI Companions Reduce Loneliness
Yea I agree. One of the things I value in social interaction is knowing that I'm being heard by another human being. There's no possible way for that to happen with an AI, so the interaction is significantly diminished. So talking to an AI with that intention/need would cause me to lose my mind.

That other response chain to your comment is one big facepalm.

zero-sharp··on Working in the office 5 days/week to build company culture is a myth: PwC report
I've had it both ways. As soon I leave, I don't hear from those people ever again. On the other hand, I've also made good friends that have lasted for years beyond the employment.

The tone of your post doesn't really help. You're not a child so you don't go looking for bonding in the workplace? Haha okay Mr Adult. Jesus Christ. Forming relationships is such a basic human thing.

zero-sharp··on Tech jobs have dried up
I got admitted into a CS masters program starting in January.
zero-sharp··on Computer Science Personality Disorder?
Oh yea, that's another part of it. Seeing your school at the top of some rankings fuels some egos as well. I've met plenty of intelligent people who remain modest for the reason I indicated in my previous post. Wish them success in their career and just move on. No doubt they'll have professional and interpersonal problems down the line.
zero-sharp··on Computer Science Personality Disorder?
Sounds like they didn't pass a high enough filter. It's easy to have a high impression of yourself when you didn't actually compete. I remember having conversations with roommates and people in my classes about how hard so and so works, how you would always find them in their office, how we would get emails from this or that professor in the middle of the night, etc. My guess is that most people don't see how competitive academics can be. Without that visibility, people form inflated (egotistical) attitudes.
zero-sharp··on LinkedIn blocked due Meshtastic video in private chat
It is corporate noise. But I think it's a great way to find, and talk to, people with similar professional backgrounds. Or to stay in touch with people that you've worked with.

>If losing access to any one account is a big deal for you, that's more than a major technological literacy failure - it's a basic life planning failure. Do not overly rely on a single thing controlled by people you cannot trust. Even my grandmother would know better.

uhhuh. While it's a good idea to have backup plans and to exercise independence, people usually aren't accustomed to losing substantial parts of their livelihood for no reason and having no recourse. There's no reason to form a backup plan for a scenario that shouldn't occur. We depend on services all the time whose providers we can't control. That's modern life. What would a backup plan look like here for the average person? Do you think your average tech savvy person has taken those steps?

The intention with this post isn't to defend unpreparedness. But there is a point to be made that cutting somebody off, through some technical loophole, shouldn't be a thing. And companies know that. Every so often they get called out in public by somebody with a lot of traction and they correct the problem. So it's only a problem if it gains enough visibility. That's the system.

zero-sharp··on Can AI Talk People Out of Conspiracy Theories?
People probably think of AI as being a neutral agent, which would give it more credibility in these kinds of conversations. The messed up thing is that they probably aren't neutral. I mean, imagine if a conspiracy theory somehow became a common chatbot response. The company deploying it would face backlash, and so they would have to bias the AI against producing those results. We would never know what kinds of biases exist in the chatbot.

Slightly less related: remember earlier this year when people were using Gemini to generate images and we saw it push political correctness?

zero-sharp··on LinkedIn blocked due Meshtastic video in private chat
I feel like posting on public forums only works if you have a big enough name. I want to be wrong about that.
zero-sharp··on LinkedIn blocked due Meshtastic video in private chat
How did you lose the account? Was there a reason from Google?
zero-sharp··on LinkedIn blocked due Meshtastic video in private chat
I've always wondered about this. What happens if one of the big tech companies makes a mistake and closes your account? LinkedIn is pretty important nowadays when searching for work. Would you be able to make a new account? If not, that seems like a pretty big deal. Same concern with your email, or any of the other big services that we usually depend on. If I just suddenly lost my gmail, I would probably lose access to external accounts and other important data, which could be crippling.
zero-sharp··on Ask HN: Rights to receive copies of / delete past job interview data
I would make an effort to search through your history as well, but it seems like you live on hackernews.
zero-sharp··on How Important Is a College Degree Compared to Experience? (2023)
I never said anything about what I believe. I've been in the workforce for years and my parents are immigrants. I don't know where your response came from.
zero-sharp··on How Important Is a College Degree Compared to Experience? (2023)
I thought the narrative was the opposite because of DEI.
zero-sharp··on Using Proxies in Web Scraping
The issue that I struggled with is browser fingerprinting. Servers can detect if you're using a browser. If you are, then there are a number of flags, or parameters, in the browser that give away your identity. You can cycle through user agents and proxies. I don't think these things help. If you're not loading the page through a browser or if you try to hide information, you're already flagged. Scraping is a cat and mouse game now.
zero-sharp··on AI ruling on jobless claims could make mistakes courts can't undo, experts warn
Someone should explain how this isn't dystopian.
zero-sharp··on Ask HN: The Importance of the Set {-1, 0, 1} and it's Universal Application
If I could downvote this post, I would.

This is a little bit like asking about the significance of the number 2. What you're asking is way too general. What are we discussing? Maybe you can describe the contexts where you've seen this set and why you think it's surprising? Sets aren't usually studied in isolation.

zero-sharp··on Show HN: Infinite Testimonials with FastHTML, Outlines, and Modal
automating the creation of false testimonials is inefficient at scale? go on ...

what's the alternative?

zero-sharp··on Show HN: Infinite Testimonials with FastHTML, Outlines, and Modal
So it's a bullshit generator? Hopefully this is just for demos.
zero-sharp··on How do you find 10x Engineers?
I can't imagine why you're not able to find perfect hires while I'm reading your post where you describe your recent hires as mediocre.
zero-sharp··on ESPN AI recap of Alex Morgan’s final professional match fails to mention her
She's a big name in soccer and she's retiring. I don't even watch soccer and I recognize her name. It doesn't matter what her performance was in her final game. It's very common to give great athletes recognition (at the very least mention) at their retirement. Your comment is bewildering (tone-deaf).
zero-sharp··on ESPN AI recap of Alex Morgan’s final professional match fails to mention her
I don't think people are upset about the technology. It's about overreliance and lack of quality control.
zero-sharp··on AI may not steal many jobs after all
Sorry, can you be more specific? What are the roles/skill sets whose demands we're not meeting?
zero-sharp··on YouTube will begin limiting access to fitness videos for European teens
I don't understand your concern. The conversation surrounding the negative impact of social media has been going on for some time now. But also, they already pick and choose what most of us watch through their recommendation system.
zero-sharp··on Four Thieves Vinegar Collective – Harm Reduction for the Living
Healthcare in the US is terrible, sure. And making medicine more accessible is a great thing. But I feel like the term "right to repair" is being hijacked here. A manufacturer that creates a piece of technology can theoretically publish repair instructions and provide parts (at a reasonable cost). This is different than the issue of accessibility in the drug space?

Maybe I'm making a fuss over nothing, but it just stood out to me.

zero-sharp··on Which Emojis Are Best for a Layoff Email?
Maybe you should also figure out a dance to perform on tiktok that you can send out with your layoff email.
zero-sharp··on The WarCraft Occult (2013)
There's an active warcraft 2 community huh? You check the forums & the last post is from 2014? Huh, ok. Then you read the "time now" stamp on the forum and it still thinks it's 2014? Okay, I'm done.
