zer0zzz··on Asahi Linux on M3
FUD based in no actual facts. Recently with the new Golden Gate OS update, Asahi boot was made inoperable. Apple basically helped the Asahi folks work around a flag in the boot loader that they had not figured out how to handle in their reverse engineering. This doesnt strike me as the actions of an organization that is planning to close down the ability for asahi to boot after years of allowing it.

What is the context here? I am saying, if they cared what OS users booted on their mac they would have used the same boot process the iPad has. They wouldn't have gone out of their way to make it possible to boot systems not signed by Apple.

I have similar issues with my ultra. Have put it on a laptop, but my desk Setup with my multiple desktop computers is usb-c video based ( kind of a poor man’s kvm) , and asahi doesn’t do usb-c video yet
zer0zzz··on Asahi Linux on M3
Man… they absolutely do not care. An Apple engineer made the boot loader for Mac open in the first place.
zer0zzz··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
Yeah, he also doesn't seem to separate those of us that hate omarchy because its a stupid distro from those of us that hate omarchy because of the authors annoying political loudness. It's a convenient tool though, label all the detractors as hating him for political reasons when the distro is objectively kinda pointless.
zer0zzz··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
I thought that’s pretty much the way all technology goes. Just seems silly to take promotion an operating system that’s essentially a lot of config files atop existing work seriously from someone that made a popular web development framework 20 years ago. That’d be like me caring about a distro Gavin king made because he made hibernate in the 2000s at jboss.
zer0zzz··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
Yeah that’s exactly it. Seems he’s manufacturing a lot of culture war bullshit just to bring attention to a less than interesting distro. If it wanted to be the “hyperland“ distro as so many distros are (built to bring one de/wm to users prepackaged) that’d be one thing. If he wanted to show people how to roll their own opinionated distro the way gentoo or lfs kinda did that’d be another too! But seems it’s neither of these, and purely vanity to me.
zer0zzz··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
Everyone knows that, but that was 20 years ago. Why do people still care?
zer0zzz··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
What exactly is special about rolling a custom arch in this instance? Like, why does this get so much attention? Do web developers really care about what DHH does that much?

Like, I get it if thats the case. Say, if Chris Lattner or Andrej Karpathy rolled some ML GPU programming distro I'd probably care about it and try and see if it made me more productive.

zer0zzz··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
Thats pretty good, then he should have made a toolkit for building and rolling your own badass distro and not a "opinionated" "omakase" system that claims to solve all of deskop linux while personally mocking a lot of people that actually have made real contributions as "clowns".
zer0zzz··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
I am a little unsure why folks keep getting convinced one new distro or another is gonna come and finally solve the Linux desktop adoption problem?

The fundamental problem linux distros have is that they dont agree on a fundamental set of libraries, user experience, or have a stable abi. We've had minimal disros before, we've had maximal install-everything distros before, and we've had special purpose distros before (ie knoppix, mythbuntu, Kali). But the same adoption problem remains.

Afaict Google and Valve have managed to meaningfully move things forward with chromeos, android, and steam OS. Tools like flatpak and others also have made a difference.

But if you're really going the typical distro route, it confounds me what the point of going outside of the typical and common debian/redhat/arch systems are especially when its one guy. Hell, I still remember SprezzOS (Nick Black's Distro) and that thing had more real goals worth praising than anything I see from Omarchy.

> It's why you switched away from Windows in the first place, remember?

Really good reminder I gotta say

zer0zzz··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
What exactly is a Linux phone and how does that actually change anything?
zer0zzz··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
The fact that you use fediverse and framework as some catchall for future innovation tells me you are really missing my point.

I am talking more about on the level of things like the migration of time spent watching television to time spent on Facebook on a pc to time spent swiping TikTok on an iPhone. None of these are inherently good or bad, but many of them exhausted their ability to grow and attract costumers and as a result doubled down on extracting value from an existing base - that’s what enshitification is or so I thought.

zer0zzz··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Enshitification doesn’t end. It collapses under its own weight as people get tired and instead stop using things or switch to some newer radically different paradigm.
zer0zzz··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Up to the M2 series are supported pretty much fully. There are a few exceptions, but it does work quite well. I'd need a good reason to grab an intel/amd laptop just for running linux.
zer0zzz··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
From what I understand, the based M1/M2s are closer to the battery life you'd want and still quite good for a linux laptop. USB DP is a real bummer though.
zer0zzz··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
It's not that bad, pop ups every few months.

I just buy older stock or refurbished these days. M1s and M2s are still good enough for me. Recently picked up a refurbished M1 16" because I wanted a larger screen in bed / on the couch for a good price with good condition refurbished from amazon.

zer0zzz··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Why not just stay on the previous 15 release? They still even push updates for it!
zer0zzz··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Why buy all that for Linux when there’s asahi for the m1?
zer0zzz··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
Seems they’re actually advertising pcie expansion. Dang I’d love to switch to a Mac for my cuda kernel writing.

I’m weighing two bad outcomes here. I think it’s a lot worse if there’s only one browser for the entire web than it is for there to be one browser for one singular platform.
zer0zzz··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
No, the two are not architected the same. I believe it’s shipped as a dylib on macOS.

This user choice argument isn’t what makes safari monopolist. It’s that for some countries iOS has majority share these days, and safari is pushed on users through it.

That’s why I was kinda trying to say it is anti-monopoly monopoly.

If Apple supported read+execute pages for third party applications, it might give users more choice but it would also have the consequence of ushering in the way for total browser domination by chromium. I’d argue that is an even worse scenario as far as monopoly is concerned.

zer0zzz··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
You're never going to have an app with plugin ability on iOS because that goes against the ios terms of service. It can be seen as shipping a competing appstore.

Tried it out, used youtube music without a subscription. Hit an ad immediately, back to brave.
zer0zzz··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
It's a really huge deferent from chromium reaching 90%+ browser share. So yes, it is in fact an anti-monopoly browser. iOS isn't even at majority market share in most places in the world.
zer0zzz··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
I agree with this, but on macos they are not entirely tired. On iOS because of the way iOS gets performance (as far as I understand it to be the case) through the iOS shared cache, there really isn't a way to totally decouple safari from iOS.

I guess you could allow an alternate newer safari, but the one that comes with the OS would have to be linked into the blob.

zer0zzz··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
Let’s be real, this is more of an anti-monopoly
zer0zzz··on Mojo 1.0
They are going to open source it eventually
