zephyreon··on Show HN: AI toy I worked on is in stores
My biggest concern with a toy like this is that my future kid might ask for a water park in our backyard and then Santa would respond with an enthusiastic “That’s a great idea Kyle! I’ll consult with the elves to see how I can make it happen!”
zephyreon··on My first contribution to Linux
This was a great read. Congratulations on your first contribution to the kernel!
zephyreon··on Jane Goodall has died
As a young person I really appreciated how she worked to connect with our generation. She was such an inspiration.
zephyreon··on Not all browsers perform revocation checking
Ironically this ends up putting a ton more load on the issuers, which some others have pointed out is why revocation doesn’t scale well (other than privacy concerns, which are valid).
zephyreon··on Not all browsers perform revocation checking
fwiw iOS happily displays the cert as very valid

zephyreon··on Not all browsers perform revocation checking
So the answer then is just much shorter-lived certs? I could definitely still see the need for an immediate revocation to be recognized near-instantaneously. Or in practice is that ultimately not necessary?
zephyreon··on Not all browsers perform revocation checking
> https://revoked.badssl.com

This loads fine in Safari on iOS 26 lol.

zephyreon··on Not all browsers perform revocation checking
Seems rather problematic that a cert that appears to have been revoked 5 days ago isn’t recognized as revoked by virtually any browser. Is this an OCSP-related issue or do browsers actually do a bad job at checking for revocation?
zephyreon··on Not all browsers perform revocation checking
Safari on iOS 26 certainly doesn’t show this page as revoked.
zephyreon··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
This is really good. I’ve seen recreations before but the attention to detail made this delightful to use. Agree with some of the other points that you’re recreating a design that already exists but it’s evident you spent some effort on this even with the help of AI (which was disclosed in the AUTHOR command in command prompt, thank you!)
zephyreon··on Show HN: Moribito – A TUI for LDAP Viewing/Queries
Apache Directory Studio is extremely cumbersome / heavy so this is much appreciated.
zephyreon··on Show HN: Moribito – A TUI for LDAP Viewing/Queries
As someone that spends an inordinate amount of time in LDAP for work, it warms my heart to see this project. Will definitely try it out!
zephyreon··on Automating Bug Bounty with N8n
> What sets n8n apart from many other automation tools is that it’s open-source, can be self-hosted, and offers nearly limitless integration options.

For what it’s worth n8n is not open-source nor do they claim to be. They use a custom license and advertise themselves as fair-code.

zephyreon··on Marek's Dev Diary: August 14, 2025
Longtime fan of SE. It’s been cool to see Keen work on their own game engine and what they prioritize vs the more mainstream engines.
zephyreon··on Baby is healed with first personalized gene-editing treatment
This is incredible. Probably the most exciting piece of news I’ve read in years.
zephyreon··on Open WebUI changed license from BSD-3 to Open WebUI license with CLA
Moreso the structure of an OSS project, which includes the funding model. The license choice is arguably one of the most important decisions yet people seem to get bitten by it quite often in my view.
zephyreon··on Open WebUI changed license from BSD-3 to Open WebUI license with CLA
Asked and answered but for the sake of discourse, what is the best model/structure for open source projects? Every OSS project that reaches critical mass seems to believe changing the license to something source-available is the only option. Is it or isn’t it? Why or why not? Does it make sense to go with a different OSS license? If it does, which license would you recommend, and in what case(s)?
zephyreon··on Show HN: Find a random wedding website
You’re missing out on a bunch of sites by pairing opposite gender names only lol.
zephyreon··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
This. I try to meet everyone where they are when entering into political discussions. I’ve learned a lot from people as a result of this and — I’d like to think — have successfully communicated an understanding of my own perspectives. Being able to sit down and talk to someone you disagree with is so important and I feel it is something we have gradually lost over time.
zephyreon··on Self-Hosting like it's 2025
I host tons of web-facing apps behind a reverse proxy. I used to have it all running in a swarm cluster with several underlying vms but decided to move everything to Unraid a while back for simplicity.

Would highly recommend.

zephyreon··on GM blocks dealers from using Apple CarPlay, Android Auto aftermarket kits
Will echo this sentiment with one caveat. I would consider a non-CarPlay enabled vehicle if the infotainment is actually good and the vehicle is the main selling point (for me that would be Rivian).
zephyreon··on GM blocks dealers from using Apple CarPlay, Android Auto aftermarket kits
Parents have a Jeep, can attest that Uconnect is probably the worst infotainment experience I have ever had the displeasure of using in any vehicle I’ve driven. 99% of Jeep owners seems more realistic.
zephyreon··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Graham’s opinions and stances on everything are akin to a flag blowing in the wind. As soon as the wind shifts, the flag immediately follows. Granted most politicians are like this but I’d venture to say Graham is one of the most consistent.
zephyreon··on Directus – real-time REST and GraphQL API of any SQL database
They’re subjective with how that’s enforced. We used it in a higher ed institution in a small department and they reached out to us demanding we fork over (a lot of) cash to continue use. They considered the entire institution’s budget as the deciding factor.

Yes, that aligns with the license, but I’ve found most companies will negotiate in good faith when the use is limited within an organization. This felt very Oracle-like.

zephyreon··on Show HN: Mikey – No bot meeting notetaker for Windows
I always ask if I can transcribe using an AI tool regardless of jurisdiction. Not sure what the other commenter’s intentions were but just throwing my two cents in.

I prefer non-bot transcription tools solely because they’re not a nuisance during the meeting — they take up valuable screen real estate and provide no input during the meeting so I’d rather them be invisible.

zephyreon··on TikTok goes dark in the US
Someone should measure how much the collective mental health in America increases while TikTok is unavailable.
zephyreon··on TikTok tells staff impacted by wildfires to use sick hours if they can't work
I read this as they still need to WFH and just need to indicate they’re doing so in the portal so they aren’t penalized.
zephyreon··on TikTok tells staff impacted by wildfires to use sick hours if they can't work
Can’t say I’m surprised given how ByteDance is their parent.

There’s a Netflix documentary called American Factory that illustrates just how different the work culture is in China vs the U.S.

Hope they change their mind and give these folks free PTO.

zephyreon··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
Student web service in question: https://ws.admin.washington.edu/student/swagger/index.html

FERPA was probably a big factor in UW’s initial response to ask that the site be taken down. Institutions are all about CYA now.

The bit about blackmail seems a bit far fetched. I’d like to see the correspondence between UW and this individual. The entire story is certainly plausible but as other have pointed out, there are a number of inconsistencies.

zephyreon··on The Egg, an at Home Nuclear Reactor
The Egg may be fake, but the merch is real. [1]
