zephjc··on Data Structures in Clojure: Hash Tables
Yeah, the less runtime reflection you make it use, the better the speed gains (I'm glad type hints are optional though).
zephjc··on Dogecoin decides to allow annual inflation of 5 billion coins each year, forever
5% is pretty steep. The rate's been relatively low for the last couple years. In 2007, it went over 4%.

zephjc··on Antimatter experiment produces first beam of antihydrogen
This is basically the power source on Romulan starships :)
zephjc··on Obama’s Path From Critic to Overseer of Spying
If theres ever a time to do the right thing, it's in the President's second term: it's all downhill, what the pundits say doesn't matter to re-electability, since there is none (unless you plan on going to another office later on...)
zephjc··on The Next Phase of Node.js
That is some ridiculous bikeshedding
zephjc··on Args.js – Optional and Default parameters for JavaScript
typo here in your readme:

    this.define('isFemale', female, String.Boolean);
should be

    this.define('isFemale', female, Strict.Boolean);
zephjc··on Hindley-Milner in Clojure
I think that was the joke :)
zephjc··on Compile Clojure to Objective-C
Targeting another popular platform, Objective-C with the Apple libraries, makes a lot of sense to me. That, and C#/.NET (which is already a thing with clojure-clr) seem like the obvious candidates.
zephjc··on Python 2.x vs 3.x use survey
no trailing space is a convenient shorthand - print by itself prints with a newline (so it might make sense to have print() vs println()); print + comma omits the newline and waits for the next print statement, so that

    print 'hi',
    do_something()
    print 'there'
and

    print 'hi', 'there'
both yield

    hi there
(Assuming do_something() doesn't call print itself)
zephjc··on Python 2.x vs 3.x use survey
I don't think it's a leading question - I think if they get a large enough sample size, it will be a worthwhile survey of the Python community's 2/3 behavior.

Ultimately, you did pro-Python 3 supporters a disservice by not speaking up.

zephjc··on Python 2.x vs 3.x use survey
Consider a generator that yields results indefinitely, or even merely millions of results. Are you still sure you want those printed to the repl? :)
zephjc··on Architect's Dream House: Less Than 200 Square Feet
The subreddit /r/tinyhouses has lots of this sort of thing, and is a pretty good collation of various blogs and articles on the subject, with some pretty decent conversation.
zephjc··on Enlightenment DR 0.18.0 Release
Those halcyon days, I remember them well.
zephjc··on NeoCities
I think people are aiming to create the original geocities experience too: Examples:

SCO v. IBM, aka "The Thing That Wouldn't Die"
zephjc··on What's Wrong with the iOS 7 Icons?
I think he means Netscape Communicator, which used the lighthouse icon (where the metaphor has something to do with guiding you around in the dark?); Navigator had the boat wheel icon.

zephjc··on My sister absolutely refuses to learn math
Math uses symbols heavily as its own jargon, and someone approaching formulae that have unspecified symbols, without knowing this jargon, is typically fruitless.

That said, I agree that math is terribly taught. My mother and my wife both hate math, and talking it out with both of them, I've been able to pinpoint it to a single bad/discouraging (and sometimes straight out mean) math teacher for both of them. Once the teacher is mean or otherwise bad about teaching, they have not only failed as teachers, but have sometimes caused the students to put up mental walls that can be hard to tear down.

I suspect the sister mentioned in the OP may have had such an experience.

zephjc··on What happens when you give 4chan images of the Boston Marathon?
> If he was planning to commit the atrocity he did, why would you stand & talk to someone? (unless they were perhaps working together)

They are photographed together in both photos, both carrying bags.

But I believe it's jumping to conclusions way way too quickly.

zephjc··on Facebook Home
No. Hacker News is serious business.
zephjc··on Flat UI: Free Web User Interface Kit
I have played with Win 8 Metro only a bit, so I can't speak for it's practical usage, but I own a WinPhone8 (Lumia 920) and the UI i think is not at all overdone, and other than tiles having their non-standard images sometimes, it's all very consistent (except for the few apps that are e.g. ports from Android or iOS, which use non-standard UI, but that's the developers' faults, not Metro's).
zephjc··on Google Glass - If I Had Glass
Add a chat/texting app and give it to teenagers and it will be instantly considered "cool".
zephjc··on Show HN: Sci-fi movie review site (side project)
Should show ratings in the movie directory pages, instead of just on the movie details pages.
zephjc··on Monads explained in Clojure by Brian Marick
Note, this is a repost of http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4992062 which went overlooked, but I added a vimeo album to link to all 4 videos.
zephjc··on Learn Clojure with Clojure Koans

zephjc··on Clojure 1.5.0 RC 1 released
> Set and map constructor functions allow duplicates

Awesome, finally!

zephjc··on E17 is out
The diagram in the Building Blocks section of http://enlightenment.org/p.php?p=about&l=en hurts my eyes. I had to zoom in to see if my eyes or the image was to blame.
zephjc··on When I first heard the name "Safari"
I don't know - when I first heard the name, 'Safari' made sense to me after a moment of thinking about it. Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, and Safari - all named around the theme of discovery.
zephjc··on Ray Kurzweil joins Google
Google continues its move towards the ad-driven singularity.
zephjc··on CheckIO is a videogame you play by writing Python.
Kind of cute, a game-oriented Python koan/exercise site. There's a lot of broken english though.
zephjc··on Portal’s physics engine rebuilt in 25KB—on a graphing calculator
Technically, that's a raycasting engine (a la Doom and Wolf3D). The first implementation that I know of that was made into a game was Daedalus for the TI-85, back in 1997 http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/11/1147.html
