zelly··on Back to the '70s with Serverless
You can still get "scale to 0" with cgi-bin applications. Yes, it's old (but it works). Yes, it's slow (so is Lambda).

Unlike Lambda, CGI works on any web server and any OS. It's also extremely easy to mock because the input and output is stdin/stdout, not AWS API invocations that cost money every time you run.

What you miss out on is "scale to infinity" (read: your bill goes to infinity too).

zelly··on Amazon disallows pointing out paid reviews
Reviews from randoms cannot be trusted. Word of mouth is king. Second is the word of professional reviewers too well-paid to be bought, like Siskel & Ebert. When a top-tier reviewer on YouTube endorses a product, it sells out instantly.

Amazon reviews are good for getting the actual details and pictures of a product that the seller couldn't be bothered to include in the description.

Yes, that is it. Thank you.
zelly··on What If OpenDocument Used SQLite? (2014)
PDF is an open spec--even though it is so complicated that there's only one complete implementation which costs money.

Maybe this is the right thread to ask:

I vaguely remember a file archive format similar to JAR/WAR (for Java) or ASAN (for Electron) which was designed for bundling software with its dependencies and static resources. It is not a container because it's just files with no specification for its runtime. Unlike JAR, it is language agnostic. These bundles could be compiled and compressed on your local machine then scp'd to a server that knows how to execute this bundle. If I recall correctly, it was some open source project from a big company.

I've spent hours trying to find it again and am wondering if I might be remembering something from a dream.

zelly··on Firefox Was Always Enough
A lot of smart TV apps are already HTML and JavaScript webviews. You can create a webview app on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, a ton of proprietary devices like cars or TVs. What benefit would Firefox OS bring here, besides creating another kludgy abstraction layer over the vendor hardware?
zelly··on Firefox Was Always Enough
> Ditching Rust as a core component of the future of Firefox is also a demonstration that Mozilla isn't a tech focused corp anymore. Rust is going to yield a lot of result when it comes to security, memory saftely and maintainability and firing Rust devs was terribly short sighted.

Mozilla was tired of getting smoked by Chrome, which actually invested in browser development using what the tools they already had ("engineering"), as opposed to subsidizing PhDs on programming language theory.

Now it's too little too late. They've passed the point where they could catch up on technical grounds, so they make appeals to morality to market their software. Yes, I agree it was bad leadership.

> Lambda calculus is a BFD in the subfield of programming languages

This is a good example of abusing the vocabulary of mathematics as is common in the FP world. A programming language is not an object in abstract algebra. You can't add, subtract, or factorize a programming language. It's just software.

when we can get cheap symmetric fiber connections in residential is when I'll start thinking about running services at home.

Too many cooks spoil the broth

I want a language designed by one very smart person, a dictator. I'm looking forward to Jai but for now the best native language is still C++. It also has too many features like Rust but at least it works.

zelly··on Why does Linux have so much trouble sleeping and waking?
Many times I find I can still ssh into the laptop even if the screen/GPU fails to draw the screen on wakeup
zelly··on Why does Linux have so much trouble sleeping and waking?
because I don't want to open my backpack and be greeted by a furnace and 10% battery left
zelly··on Manifest V3 now available on M88 Beta
the doomsday scenario the top-level comment mentioned is if they disabled that option. it's possible but very unlikely because it would make that browser unusable for many corporate networks.
zelly··on Manifest V3 now available on M88 Beta
then I'll use a fork that uses old DNS. maintaining a small diff that enables old DNS is easy enough that I could do it myself. much easier than trying to fork out Manifest V3.

you can block most ads that uBlock Origin blocks with a hosts file. they still cannot take that away from you.

I might actually start doing this now that I considered how much access I'm giving to uBlock Origin.

do you really think your "data" is valuable? or was this just an idea put in your head by journalists?

ponder that for a moment

turns out people didn't want to swipe right on the same website their grandma uses

good lesson in there that some domains just don't mix

zelly··on FTC Sues Facebook for Illegal Monopolization
there is no end. crypto will continue to swallow up all the world's capital and you'll be furious at how many leading zeros there are in your BTC-priced paycheck.
zelly··on FTC Sues Facebook for Illegal Monopolization
that's just delusion and cope. if the price keeps going up for years, then no matter what you think you're wrong. the market isn't being irrational, you are.
zelly··on FTC Sues Facebook for Illegal Monopolization
no one else can afford to host that much useless content except maybe the US government. the alternative would be that YT dies and nothing replaces it. sometimes there is no alternative to centralization.
zelly··on FTC Sues Facebook for Illegal Monopolization
the social graph isn't all that valuable to outsiders. anyone determined enough can scrape it without permission anyway. no one else can do much with it except maybe intelligence agencies which were already voluntarily given root access a long time ago.

the main economic value of it is to serve ads on Facebook dot com. that's it. that's how they make 100% of their earnings.

zelly··on Deno 1.6 supports compiling TypeScript to a single executable
Containers changed the game. 99% of Deno/Go/Rust server software will be running on containers in practice. You're no longer deploying to a system running other programs which may share pages. It's a container, not a process. Dynamic linking in a container is just a vestigial useless step.
zelly··on Qt 6.0
Developers have already foregone traditional desktop development since webapps and Electron took over. Webapps are as incidental of a substitute for desktop applications as mobile apps that run on desktop would be. Companies don't volunteer for expen$$$ive development work just out of a sense of purity when it doesn't bring in any more money.

Windows still owns the desktop but they mimic Apple. Also since ca. 2008 the population under 30 has been mostly on Apple. Those people will get older and replace the generation that was brought up on Windows.

zelly··on Qt 6.0
A mobile app written in portable code that runs without emulation on a desktop.

The desktop OS would expose the same platform SDK as the mobile OS. (Needless to say, apps depending on the accelerometer, selfie cam, etc. for major functionality would not work.)

This is already the case with the latest generation of Macs. No speculation necessary. It's possible and has been done. Also Chromebooks can run Android apps.

What remains to be seen is when (not if) Windows would mimic what Apple did, as they have been doing for the past decades. I suppose the easiest way would be to run Android (and Google Play) on WSL. Android and Google Play can run on x86–no need for emulation. How clunky this turns out is how willing MS and Google are to work together.

In the end there will just be two platforms you would have to support as a GUI applications developer: iOS and Android.

zelly··on Show HN: This website is valid JSON
All of the things you mentioned serve a purpose that, at scale, would have to be replicated in some ad-hoc manner in JSON.

Yes XML is more expensive to parse, but so is all the extra stuff you have to do to get around the various limitations of JSON, which could have been done cheaply by an optimized XML parser.
