Possibly a cultural affect though? His statement could be true for the american context.

In a capitalism steeped melting pot, it does seem like things that might be more commonly 'seen'/appreciated in other cultures - pride in one's work, common standards of politeness, sense of serving/interacting with 'your community' rather than just 'anonymous strangers from other communities' - that could be non-financial motivators for good service elsewhere that are simply missing or too few & far between here.

zedadex··on Upspin – Another option for file sharing
Is their hope or stated objective to move all file sharing to this format? My takeaway was that this was designed for the use case of "trivial day-to-day sharing without hassle" (or at least that's their focus on the consumer case), i.e. taking the "another option" at face value.

Long-lived public files seem like a different use case, and one that is already generally handled okay by traditional hosting or file sharing.

zedadex··on We Tried Slack and We Deeply Regretted It (2015)
Ublock's advanced features are pretty nice + handy for selective script enabling/disabling. It does it by origin rather than kind of course, but if you're looking for a quick toggle you might already have one in your toolbar :)

The due diligence in this case would have been researching the user limits which (as others have pointed out) were not published or advertised anywhere.

Agreed, and well said. This one line concisely sums up the first and last word on this whole pitch.

zedadex··on Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him
Yeah, it's actually quite a gamechangr. sunglasses

Kidding aside, it is, though. It crosses a line that, from a strict point of view (like that of permissions or data security) can't be uncrossed. It's equatable to any and every comment being edited or editable without labelling, presented as the unmarked original.

We're approaching the point where reddit comments are seen as valid enough to appear in congressional reports (re: the combetta bleachbit thing); I can't even begin to imagine the legal exposure this would give reddit if that were further along. (Though I guess I can; imagine if this were Twitter or FB; I'm sure some tens of thousands of cases would potentially be under question...)

And that's not even approaching the whole 'potential for historical revisionism' can of worms. Don't worry mate - the gravity of this isn't lost on all of us. :)

zedadex··on Reddit CEO admits to altering user comments that were critical of him
> the only thing he secretly altered was the target of the insults

Basically irrelevant. One hell of a veil to pierce.

This isn't even the first time reddit's indicated they're kind of... flexible, let's say, with how they handle certain kinds of data; but it always seemed like they stopped just short of crossing lines.

Unmarked edits to user comments was absolutely not something I'd've expected to come of that, so I can't say I'm not surprised; still, this seems like it's just the next stage of something that's always seemed to exist (or not exist, I suppose) for them.

zedadex··on On 2016 Apple: What do “Pro” users want?
> Unless there is an external factor which drives iPhone sales: the availability of iPhone software, which is not controlled by Apple. This software is developed by external Pros. On Macs.

I wouldn't say the demand for iOS apps is as elastic as the author thinks. The big push towards building for iOS isn't 'mostly people just playing around with xcode', but people actively pursuing profit off the market of users the iOS env has.

Even if fewer MBP users led to a significant ramp-down in the number of unique quality-app devs in the app store (I doubt it), the big players and their apps would still be around, as would many more hopefuls trying for a slice of the pie.

zedadex··on Finland plans to replace classic school subjects with broader “topics” (2015)
I'm only now realizing my interest in some things I could have spent more time learning when younger, yet even if I knew then what I do now, I still think it wouldn't've been something I spent 'my time' doing - not a lot of it, anyway. (Conversely, there are things I was interested in then that I have the resources to learn far mor effectively now, that I absolutely would've loved to have been tinkering with sooner.)

It's absolutely highly interest-driven, and while the information can sometimes be neatly standardized and labelled, that interest can't be.

It can be cultivated, but figuring out how best to do that takes tweaking and experimentation. As such I'll keep an eye out for Finland's progress on this and look forward to seeing what their findings are.

zedadex··on Office UI Fabric by Microsoft
Coming from windows (trying out mac), I have run into instances where (as I'm so used to the MS way) it's actually kind of jarring seeing dialogs that don't follow that "Don't" suggestion.

Granted, I haven't used much new MS software lately, so if they've gotten worse about that as you say that's a shame.

zedadex··on Seriously, we don’t need smartphone-controlled candles
"Seriously, we don’t need smartphone-controlled X" will always give way to "but if it doesn't exist, we'll have the market to ourselves," and so you'll continue to see "smartphone-controlled X"s being created and successfully funded, as niches still have profit margins.

There's really no point to the protestations anymore. "Smart X" is the new novelty modifier, and we've seen these come and go before. Just acknowledge it as a trend, purchase the ones you always had an interest in and believe a good product exists for, and forget about trying to dissuade the average consumer from doing what they're going to do anyways.

zedadex··on Gawker Files for Bankruptcy, Will Be Put Up for Auction
> Thiel destroyed a news company out of spite.

Thiel enabled something which should have destroyed them but was unlikely to (because of one of the stupidest reasons to not uphold the law, "because one side doesn't have the funds") to actually destroy them.

Gawker pretty much brought it upon themselves expecting to get away with it (see their disorganized deposition where one of the plaintiffs was actually laughing at questions).

While I'm wary of letting money have any more influence over the courts, this could be seen as a way for it to actually have less influence - the situation of "A is right but can't fund their case."

The worst you could do with this situation with billions to spare would be to try and fund a side "in the wrong" to help someone get away with something, but if the case against them is that strong all the funded legal maneuvering shouldn't allow them to 'get away clean'... Though perhaps 'shouldn't' should be the operative word there.

zedadex··on Gawker Files for Bankruptcy, Will Be Put Up for Auction
Agreed with the direction you were going there.

While I wholeheartedly support those organizations, your point highlights why I think making 'maintainence' a crime wouldn't pose a problem for those looking to interfere - it would just slow them down. All they'd have to do is come up with a good reason for making it their business (I'm sure even Thiel could have gotten away with a "defense of privacy" argument if he hadn't acknowledged having a vendetta with Gawker) or otherwise 'launder' their money through donations to charities or benefactors who have strong enough ties to whatever policy it is to support litigation.

We've all seen how well money works "for the people" when allowed in large sums through superPACs in campaign financing, I agree with the OC in that this is a major issue which we shouldn't let be clouded by specific opinions of Hogan or Gawker.
