zed88··on Show HN: Instil – Platform for creating and monetising live classes
Co-founder of Instil here. Here is a bit of backdrop.

We started Instil after finding out that many classes have gone live after the lockdowns began. It seemed to us that the live classes are here to stay and we should make our move to adapt to the changing paradigm.

We wanted to not just build a software solution, but also a community platform with a gallery. So here we are a few months later!

This is very much an alpha product so any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks!

zed88··on Signal is having technical difficulties
Done, thanks for mentioning this. TBH..I would happily pay for a paid tier of Signal.
zed88··on No-code platform Webflow (YC) raises $140M at a $2.1B valuation
After watching Vlad's interview on this week in startup, I think the product deserves more success. His story is inspiring.

zed88··on Ecosia – A search engine that plants trees
I hope they aren't planting monocultures instead of mixed forests. If they do...they are no better than the Chinese.
zed88··on Trump administration goes ahead with rule to scrap visa lottery
Try New Zealand. Even harder.
zed88··on GitHub blocks entire company because one employee was in Iran
Yeah you forgot to add 'extra-judicial' to the drone strikes, breaching every international law.
zed88··on GitHub blocks entire company because one employee was in Iran
Well...human memory is certainly weak or biased or both. Let's not forget Guantánamo bay, which is just one among many examples.
zed88··on GitHub blocks entire company because one employee was in Iran
US laws follow US geo-politics, which is where the problem lies.
zed88··on GitHub blocks entire company because one employee was in Iran
What's the difference between a Chinese company and a US company? None. Both work for the state, although US ones operate under the guise of democracy.

This sort of union between tech and politics is not going to take us anywhere.

zed88··on The Evolution of a Haskell Programmer (2001)
I think Hasura is written in Haskell
zed88··on Jack Ma has not been seen in public for two months
"Don't bite the hand that feeds you", it certainly sounds true in China.

And after watching that interview with Elon, he certainly doesn't seem that bright.

zed88··on Chobani Yogurt CEO Hamdi Ulukaya Is a Pro-Employee Billionaire in Expansion Mode

zed88··on Bug drone for UK army that weights 196g, has 40 mins autonomy and 2km range
The last thing we need in the world messed up by Covid and the military industrial complex is more war machines and normalisation of meaningless wars (all of which have an undertone of neo-colonialism, where we use buzzwords to justify our acts by painting the other side as less of a human).

We could use the technology though, in solving real problems.

zed88··on California nurse tests positive over a week after receiving Pfizer vaccine
No more surprising than people assuming that a "plumber" is usually male. What are you trying to imply here?
zed88··on Covid: France rewards frontline immigrant workers with citizenship
Anti-Immigrant sentiment is rife here in New Zealand as well. In particular against Asians. If your skin is white, you blend easy here.
zed88··on Boeing 'inappropriately coached' pilots in 737 MAX testing: U.S. Senate report
This is what happens when you patch-up airframe stability issues with code. We have gone to the point of no return to save one last buck and only the MBA types are to blame for this.
zed88··on Stripe’s payments APIs: the first ten years
No complaints about the product, but not happy with Stripe's ever increasing transaction cost.
zed88··on LinkedIn’s Alternate Universe
LinkedIn to me seems full of recruiters, self promoters and narcissist posts from middle level manager types.
zed88··on World's first no-kill eggs go on sale in Berlin (2018)
The moral dilemma that vegans/vegetarians face is at what size we consider them sentient. Does the same apply to the micro-organism that vegans consume everyday on their salad? Or they are simply not sentient enough because we can't see them with naked eyes?
zed88··on Google Launches App That Lets Banks Remotely Lock Your Android Device
Google seems to be setting new benchmarks every now and then.
zed88··on Dutch flying car gets permission to drive on European roads
You can do zero roll jump takeoffs if you have enough rotor speed. Watch this: https://youtu.be/9ISIlgMcb-U
zed88··on Show HN: Tara – A free Jira alternative, now with Gitlab
It's an interesting pivot for you guys from building some sort of recruitment AI (I remember seeing it somewhere) to this.

Would you mind elaborating this shift?

Anyways, Good luck with the launch! Will give this a go.

zed88··on Dutch flying car gets permission to drive on European roads
Wonder if this can do pre-rotation, it would be cool to take off like a helicopter.
zed88··on Gabe Newell applies for NZ residency
Sure, come on in, we will embrace you with open arms. We already have SF like social issues here, so we won't mind. Our housing is messed up on even a grander scale than SF. It's not all flowery here either, but it's way better than many other places on the planet atm.
zed88··on Gabe Newell applies for NZ residency
The bigger issue that NZ has is its old boys network, which wouldn't allow radical ideas and startups to succeed.

The solution is to dilute it with tech entrepreneurs and investors from outside NZ and recreate the landscape.

I live in Wellington and the tech scene here, although small, is quite vibrant.

There is no reason why we can't accommodate those companies and workers who want to move out of SF. The govt will need to give heavy tax incentives and easy route to residency for those entrepreneurs who move their company here.

zed88··on Gabe Newell applies for NZ residency
Well, if you have about 3 million dollar to put away, you're welcome here too. We need more Billionares and tech businesses here.

zed88··on Twilio set to acquire Segment for $3.2B
Hopefully they drop the pricing after this, else I am moving to Rudderstack.
zed88··on Moldova Shuts Down Bootleg Helicopter Factory
Damn I would love to have one, I mean who wouldn't love a bootleg helicopter right? Here is an engine start video that I absolutely loved https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1xKhc77VXk
zed88··on WHO official: Asymptomatic spread of coronavirus 'rare'
As someone who worked for a global UN agency, I can personally attest to the influence of China in the organisation. I remember one instance where the Chinese govt. kicked a major fuss over including 'Taiwan' in the country selector dropdown for our web properties. The order came from really high up in the top and we had to remove Taiwan lol.
zed88··on Wikipedia Is Now Banned in China in All Languages (2019)
All hail the CCP. The totalitarianism of China just baffles me.
