zeamaize··on De-Location Package: Keep Your Career and Live Beyond the Bay Area
Just about everywhere else I've lived is culturally richer, DC, Chicago, Miami, London, Houston, all had better cultural and art scenes.

I'm big in theater, ballet, and art. San Francisco is way too expensive for artists to live in anymore and the art scene there is very limited, inorganic, and a bit stale. Further the distance to San Francisco means it's a chore (and a drive) to get there from the South Bay where all the jobs are.

Now I can take public transit to cultural institutions, and walk to a lot too. We have organic arts districts with real artists in residency, regular gallery showings and art walks, and some amazing local musicians.

You might get that in Oakland these days, but even Oakland is getting prohibitively expensive.

> The original salary must have been low, no hate.

My new salary is just much higher, I've had several major steps up. I've found salaries in major metro areas to be pretty much the same as a competitive offer in the Bay Area.

> Different strokes for different folks. If you're working at a company that already pays well and you're not in the Bay Area, then your options for switching are either exciting but very risky startups (< $1 billion) or small satellite offices of big corps that have limited team options and little political influence (bad for advancement in senior positions). These would typically be lateral movements at best.

The Bay Area isn't the only place with a tech sector, and there are plenty of companies whose main offices aren't in the Bay Area. Washington DC, Chicago, Austin, Denver, all have tremendous tech industries. I've even had job offers at great places that are further out there.

My "one that got away" was a job offer in Portland I still think about. It was a great opportunity and a fantastic city, but I ultimately went elsewhere primarily based on the desire to bring some of my projects with me.

I left the Bay Area in 2011 because I was tired of the endless suburban hellscape, the high cost of housing, and the poor cultural offerings (yeah SFO is great but that's a long way off).

I was worried it'd be tough to move jobs or careers and that getting new jobs would be harder.

It hasn't been. I've been steadily moving up and into new positions at new companies every 2 years just like I was in the Bay Area. My salary is 2.7x higher than it was when I left the Bay Area, and I now have a 5,000 sqft home in a great city that I paid about 1/10th as much for as I would have in the Bay Area.

zeamaize··on Eating less and more than needed on alternate days prolongs life (2006)
I do strict calorie counting. I cook most of what I eat and do volumetric estimation on the rare days I eat out.
zeamaize··on Eating less and more than needed on alternate days prolongs life (2006)
This sort of result has been showed repeatedly. We really need more (and better) nutrition education. The level of obesity and overeating in our society is astounding. I'd be surprised if most people could even implement basic calorie counting.

Then why do it in TeX as opposed to Inkscape?
zeamaize··on The Wall Street Journal to Close Google Loophole Entirely
Why the hell should I pay for poor journalism that is riddled with ads?

There is a reason I subscribe to Netflix but not Hulu.

zeamaize··on Doomsday Prep for the Super-Rich
That ship seems to have already sailed.
zeamaize··on Too much sitting, too little exercise may accelerate biological aging
It's the other way: standing is necessary but not sufficient. Exercise doesn't cancel out sitting and blood pooling in your legs.
zeamaize··on Too much sitting, too little exercise may accelerate biological aging
Except it's not about a decade. Good friend of mine died at 30 from obesity induced cardiomyopathy. Then we talk about quality of life. I run, lift, and generally workout because I want to maintain quality of life as much as length.

My Aunt is 95 and still runs 5k every day. Guess who isn't an invalid in her autumn years?

zeamaize··on Too much sitting, too little exercise may accelerate biological aging
Part of the problem here is the obesity angle. Obese people are sick, they have a serious disease, they cannot pursue fitness until they fix their underlying weight problem. Obese and overweight people need to focus on getting their diet healthy while doing very moderate exercise. Fitness only comes after you hit a healthy weight.
zeamaize··on Too much sitting, too little exercise may accelerate biological aging
Exercise feels great. It wears you down but it makes you feel alive! Exercise is the time during the day I am most at peace and relaxed. No work bullshit, just me and my goals.
zeamaize··on I Turned a Routine Traffic Ticket into a Constitutional Trial
It's a problem of our system in general. When I don't pay something I supposedly "owe" immediately penalties escalate unreasonably.

When the state doesn't pay something they owe, there is no penalty. That asymmetry breeds injustice.

zeamaize··on I Turned a Routine Traffic Ticket into a Constitutional Trial
To be fair the author clearly doesn't understand the basis of the law either. Hint: it's not the constitution, even if it ever was.

It's power and the threat of violence from the elite.

zeamaize··on I Turned a Routine Traffic Ticket into a Constitutional Trial
Wait, political corruption from an elected official is your WTF here?

Have you been paying attention?

zeamaize··on I Turned a Routine Traffic Ticket into a Constitutional Trial
No states have excellent DMVs (or BMVs, or IDS) some states just have worse ones than others.
zeamaize··on I Turned a Routine Traffic Ticket into a Constitutional Trial
Not everyone complies with registrations. Compliance is especially low amongst the poor, ethnic minorities in large cities, and the wealthy elite in California.
zeamaize··on Public universities have “really lost our focus”
Maybe in liberal arts and crafts, but this bullshit doesn't apply to STEM.
zeamaize··on Lessons from 3,000 technical interviews
The benefits are ridiculous. Not the costs. Where I live it costs $28,000 to get a BS. I took out loans for every penny. Before college my salary was just under $18,000. After college I was making $48,000. I got my MS and PhD for free, fully funded by my work while in graduate school. I even made a decent salary, $18,000 during the year and $30,000 during summer internships.

My first post-grad school salary was $112,000.

My education was an investment. It paid off.

Why would you see the decisions of the rich elite few allowed to be part of government as reflective of the population?
zeamaize··on There's no good reason for Apple to kill the headphone jack
I have never had a bad experience with Bluetooth.

I don't use wired headphones anymore, wireless is just better for running.

That said -- I oppose eliminating this jack. My hearing disabled father relies on it for his custom monaural earpiece.

Why eliminate such a functional port in the first place? As someone who took the MacBook plunge USB-C is a pain in the ass.

Or... You know... Don't live in California.

We moved from the coasts to Iowa. I got a 14% salary bump. My wife got a 41% salary bump.

We have been socking away savings non-stop, just bought a house, and all of a sudden can afford vacations, furniture... Everything.

Life is better here, all around. Our commute dropped from a 1.5 hr drive to a 20m walk (5m if we drive). We went from shelling out $3,000 a month for a crappy one bedroom with no space to paying $1500 for a giant house.

We can walk to a swanky wine bar, and afford drinks rather than drive 45m to one where we just split a glass and grimace at the bill.

We can eat out, we can travel, the schools are good, the crime is non-existent, and our backyard has a trailhead in it!
