zanedb··on GitHub supports open source provisions in National Defense Authorization Act
While I agree with your sentiment, I think it would be difficult for GitHub to open-source their product.

The limitation for them is obviously their enterprise offerings, which would be far less profitable if businesses could just roll their own GitHub instance.

I thought about it and couldn't come up with many SaaS companies that are open-source. Especially not with the same business model as GitHub.

I too would love an open-source version, but for the reasons above I doubt it will happen.

zanedb··on Mastodon 2.0
Mastodon seems very interesting, but I have one significant issue with it.

If every instance is decentralized, how can you be sure the instance you use is actually running the Mastodon code? How can you be sure it hasn't been modified to collect user credentials, for example?

Is there some sort of signature verification for Mastodon instances?

zanedb··on It Takes Just $1k to Track Someone's Location with Mobile Ads
Well, this isn't a VPN service, but this app (combined with a hosts file) does ad-blocking.

zanedb··on US telcos appear to be selling non-anonymized access to consumer telephone data
Well, the first demo is now returning a NXDOMAIN error.. they likely just changed their DNS after this blew up. The second domain just returns a WordPress error.

So, I never got to experience the data myself but I'm sure it's there.

Does anyone have a new working demo URL for either service?

What about for Verizon?

zanedb··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
When you're done with this, please open-source it on GitHub. Something like this would be very useful.
zanedb··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
Do you happen to have any of these available on GitHub? Particularly #7 would be very useful.
zanedb··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
Very interesting and smart system. Could you possibly share this code on GitHub?

Looks like the website is down.. the old HN hug of death.
zanedb··on Backblaze's Hard Drive Stats for Q2 2017
I understand why you don't support Linux. And while I wish you did, I respect the decision.

However, can you provide me with a backup client integrated with B2 that makes backups as simple as the regular home service? I don't want to deal with CLI or anything complicated.

zanedb··on Ideal OS: Rebooting the Desktop Operating System
Yes, since Android Marshmallow (6.0), which is almost 3 years old, there has been a granular permissions system. Most apps support it now, but there is the problem that only 45.8% of all Android devices have M or later.

zanedb··on Ideal OS: Rebooting the Desktop Operating System
That's true. Maybe there could be an 'enable advanced permissions' option?
