zadokshi··on You can't just assume UTF-8
Better to assume UTF8 and fail with a clear message/warning. Sure you can offer to guess to help the end user if it fails, but as other people have pointed out, it’s been standard for a long time now. Even python caved and accepted it as the default: https://peps.python.org/pep-0686/
zadokshi··on Apple users are being locked out of their Apple IDs with no explanation
How many laws would that break?
zadokshi··on Apple users are being locked out of their Apple IDs with no explanation
I can easily imagine an AI algorithm noticing a user has two phones, and deciding that is out of the ordinary and suspicious, and locking you out of both.
zadokshi··on MemoryDB: A fast and durable memory-first cloud database
Yes, it does seem like all that effort to wrap redis is wasted, and that it’d be easier to just create their own. It isn’t clear to me why this is better than creating their own. Does anyone know why they would go the route of trying to wrap something around redis rather than just replace it with something that has a redis compatible API?
zadokshi··on Magnesium Depletion Score and Metabolic Syndrome in US Adults
So if someone lives off white bread and pasta with little to no meant/veg, that could possibly deplete magnesium.

Is that true, there is more magnesium in the husk?

zadokshi··on Magnesium Depletion Score and Metabolic Syndrome in US Adults
It’s not clear to me which foods you would need to “only eat” to not have enough magnesium. Meat, vegetables, and grains all contain magnesium. I wonder if you process meat into (for example) hot dogs, you are eating meat mixed with grains, so the grain content might decrease the total magnesium.

Perhaps a high calorie diet (soft drinks, potato chips, etc…) would lead someone to eat less “real food” (meat, vegetables, and grains), and thus overall magnesium would be less.

But still, I don’t know what one would have to focus on eating to avoid magnesium.

zadokshi··on Google workers arrested after protesting company's work with Israel
Freedom on full display. Employees free to break their employment contract. Employer free to fire them.

Let me guess, you want power to control what people and companies can or can not do? I don’t trust you enough to put you in control of that.

zadokshi··on Spotify demonetizes all tracks under 1k streams
This is literally their current business model. Large music distributors pay for streams, the songs rise up the charts, people see the songs. If that’s not advertising I don’t know what is.
zadokshi··on Institutions try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution
No. The point is the examples don’t directly support the contention.

Observing that the examples don’t directly support the contention doesn’t by itself validate or invalidate contention.

zadokshi··on The Linux Kernel Prepares for Rust 1.77 Upgrade
Saying part of the problem is “using too many dependencies” is not an overly helpful thing if the ecosystem keeps on trying to download 3Gb of build dependencies because you tried to use some simple little library. The problem is obvious, it’s the solution that is much more difficult.
zadokshi··on Uv: Python packaging in Rust
Golang users don’t sit around arguing about package managers, nor do they have trouble with trying to make sure they have the right version of go installed.

Early versions of go didn’t solve things well, but go has had this fixed for a long time now. Any arguments about packaging issues are likely related to older out of date problems people had.

The only real problem people have these days is around private non open source packages. You can do it, but you need to learn how to set environment variables.

zadokshi··on Uv: Python packaging in Rust
That’s literally his point. Other languages have solved this. It makes no sense that it’s not solved in python. (If your not sure how look at a golang go.mod file or a rust Cargo.toml file.)
zadokshi··on Apple confirms it's breaking iPhone web apps in the EU on purpose
No one meads “scare screens”.

I’m. It sure what I think about this yet, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to land on “allowing less privacy aware browsers to run web “apps” with heightened privileges seems like a recipe for disaster.

Maybe in the long term ther is a way to do it well. But for now I’m not sure.

zadokshi··on Did the ancient Greeks and Romans experience Alzheimer's?
Yes, but there are other studies that make this link. The link is apparently strong enough that some prefer the phrase “type three diabetes” as a way to describe Alzheimers.

“Currently, there is a rapid growth in the literature pointing toward insulin deficiency and insulin resistance as mediators of AD-type neurodegeneration, but this surge of new information is riddled with conflicting and unresolved concepts regarding the potential contributions of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), metabolic syndrome, and obesity to AD pathogenesis.”

zadokshi··on Companies embracing SMS for account logins should be blamed for SIM-swap attacks
Exactly, it wouldn’t be hard for the mobile providers to require sms confirmation and/or written authorisation before a number is ported out.

I don’t know if it’s government law or phone company laziness getting in the way of SIM security, but giving up on SIM security seems nonsensical and silly. Fix SIM porting security.

zadokshi··on Philadelphia Jury Hits Monsanto with $2.25B Roundup Verdict
We already know for a fact that the pharmaceutical companies have teams to manipulate social media through bot accounts. I don’t know why Beyer/Monsanto would be any different.

zadokshi··on iPhone apps harvest data when they send you notifications, researchers find
Spoken like someone who has never implemented a push notification system.

How does a server know when to send a push notification to a client if the server doesn’t know the users local Timezone.

Want a wake up call at 7am? How does the server know when to make the call? Want to avoid sending a study reminder at 3am, how does the server know when it is 3am? Most websites do some kind of location detection to show times back to the user that are likely in their current Timezone.

zadokshi··on CVE-2023-40547 – avoid incorrectly trusting HTTP headers
Yep I’m surprised this made it through even basic code review. It makes it seem like this code was written by a junior dev without any code review. Accidents happen; it’s human and understandable; but wowzer this one seems like a beginner level mistake.
zadokshi··on iPhone apps harvest data when they send you notifications, researchers find
Not saying some companies aren’t up to no-good. But, collecting timezone (or ip to infer timezone), as long as it’s done with user consent in the privacy policy and or notifications setup process is actually helpful for end users. Most of us want (for example) our exercise reminder or our news update to arrive at breakfast even when we travel across Timezone boundaries. I don’t want to have to sign in to an app or go to a settings page for an app to tell it when I cross Timezone boundaries. If apps are collecting info to allow inferring Timezone without user consent then thats a different kettle of fish.

Not that I ever want linked in notifications, I definitely don’t want linked in notifications at 3am in the morning because I crossed a few international date lines.

zadokshi··on Train robbery for Amazon packages? More common than you think
The cost of the losses are likely less than the cost of increased security. If it was more profitable to use “armoured cars” they would be doing it. No company willingly chooses the less profitable option.
zadokshi··on Gene therapy allows an 11-year-old boy to hear
The ability to distinguish sounds in an L2 that is not in the L1 is absolutely possible. It comes with a combination of massive input and being taught the tongue positions to allow the person to begin producing the two sounds. If someone says they can’t distinguish the sounds mostly it’s because they haven’t had enough comprehensible audio input.
zadokshi··on Gene therapy allows an 11-year-old boy to hear
Yes, this is the real answer. The claims being made are not as articulate as they should be. You could perhaps say “before 12 a person can pick up an accent for ‘free’” but after twelve its certainly possible to pick up correct accent but it requires conscious effort, which many people are not interested in after they get their spoken L2 to the “good enough” point.
zadokshi··on The Last Days of the Barcode
Not gonna lie, I’m not convinced we are in the “last days” of the barcode. Large institutions and associated standards change slowly.
zadokshi··on Ask HN: Can we do better than Git for version control?
The inner workings of git are not overly complicated. The real problem is git only provides a thin layer on top of the inner workings. It’s not git that needs replacing, (it’s just saving blobs of data) it’s the user interface on top that is confusing. The problem with simplifying the user interface is that abstracting away the complexity is super difficult.
zadokshi··on Ask HN: Can we do better than Git for version control?
To be honest, I can’t even imagine what you imagine “git save” and “git update” would even do in an alternate universe.
zadokshi··on Millions of customers in Australia hit by mobile phone and internet outage
Technical people have a blind spot where they think technical competence and expertise is what helps someone up the food chain. The truth is it’s who you know not what you know. Especially in these larger types of companies.

So do tech CEO’s just have more bad luck lately? Or is it that the title tech CEO make it more likely that you will appear in the news? (Compared to the rest of the violent acts against non tech CEO’s that isn’t reported)
