zadler··on Ethereum 2.0 launches
Bitcoin will continue to use PoW while the main chain transaction fees are enough to buy adequate security for the network. This could be a very long time, or indefinite if it continues on it’s current trajectory. And if it does, then some governments will almost certainly take an interest in mining as a way to generate revenue from available energy, as Venezuela is already doing.
zadler··on Ethereum 2.0 launches
Perhaps not, but blockchains, as well central bank digital currencies, will definitely have a big impact on society. People will have an alternative to the monetary system provided by their government. Eventually this could well lead to alternative governmental systems becoming available. There is also a chance that old tax codes will never adaquetely adapt to the way that crypto currencies are used. It looks set to reduce the role of central governments and banks in finance.

> we really haven't progressed that much outside of technology

This would imply that the measure of progression / advancement is civility, and that we are going to progress and become more civil given more time. That seems to be a fallacy also, it may be that evolution does not optimise for civility at all, after all being civil is not going to help you to crush your enemies or attract a mate in this environment.

Try Haskell, the ceiling is so high for the type system that you can spend a lot of time trying to golf an interface until you are happy that it is maximally elegant. Banal is better in some regards, hense Go. But it’s always a trade off where the extremes are pushing your boundaries and getting stuff done.

zadler··on Entropy and Life
I have a theory about this. To me the relationship between entropy and life was a big realisation and left me wondering why it wasn’t of greater cultural or scientific interest. Here’s what I came up with:

All life is preoccupied with removing free energy in order to get greater predictability over the future, and that encompasses literally everything we do in one way or another. Therefore, the theory that life reduces local entropy is not in any way useful, because it doesn’t guide us to do anything differently than we are already doing. It’s a bit similar to the anthropic principle.

Example: let’s say you need to clean up your room. You’ll find that even doing a very quick straightening of debris on a table will make a space feel more orderly and produce some level of satisfaction. But if you’re not the type to do that regularly, you might not bother the next time because clutter is the norm and it’s more dependable.

Another example: tell a businessman that life is a process which reduces entropy locally. Ok, so he has to get greater predictability over his circumstances, how to do that? More money and power. That was already taking place.

Thus, this theory hasn’t really taken off for lack of utility.

When we have a magical entropy measuring device, then yes, we can use it for all sorts of things...

Im hopeful about chloroquine but concerned that blocking the virus may lead to recovery but not give the body time to develop immunity. So far I havn’t seen much discussion about this.
zadler··on Oregon has first confirmed Covid-19 case
There’s no reason to believe the Iranian number is anywhere near accurate. On the contrary, it’s likely that the cases confirmed number is too low everywhere except maybe the diamond princess. Quoting 17% as the possible death rate is just inciting panic. It’s likely much lower. Which is not to say you should not worry; I think it’ll reach most people and end up killing millions.
