zackola··on Ask HN: What do you use when searching for houses or apartments online?
+1 ... Ok fine I work there, but I use it too!
zackola··on Ask HN: Worst working conditions you have written code in?
Pales in comparison to your story but I worked in a basement office, with awful fluorescents, no natural light, with 95.5FM a top 50 hits station blaring through the overhead system, in a open space for a man who was a pretty dead on 50/50 mix of Michael Scott from The Office and Buster from Arrested Development whose puppy would love to run around and shit in the back corner of the office near the server room. Other than that, it was a pretty sweet first job :)
zackola··on Ask HN: Recommend chair to comfortably support my hacker ass for 12+ hours a day?
+1 for the Mirra. Got a Mirra at home, Aeron at work. Mirra wins! Definitely spring for the adjustable armrests.

zackola··on Ask HN: PhD, Startup, or Career?
PhD or Startup
zackola··on Ask HN: playin' the stocks game
+1 I'd recommend reading The Boglehead's Guide to Investing. And checking out the forums over here: http://www.bogleheads.org/ Amazingly intelligent discussion going on.
zackola··on Ask HN: What's a good low profile job where I can hack at the same time?
Librarian +1
zackola··on Laptop of choice for a Programmer, Need Help
Agreed. Find a mac addict on craigslist who bought one right before the new ones came out. Spend 50 bucks at crucial to max out the memory to 4GB. Mmmm. Tasty memory.
zackola··on Is this iTunes app spam or smart marketing?
Shift+!
zackola··on Ask YC: best (multi-user) startup email support/helpdesk system?
Pretty sweet and easy to get this working in a Rails app http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/HowToReceiveEmailsWi... Then users in the rails app can claim feedback, and reply through the system, so everything gets nice and logged. I'm not sure what your development platform looks like but you should be able to wire this type of thing up somehow.
zackola··on Ask YC: Anyone have any subscription service tips/experience?
This is the part of the post where you give out a few free beta accounts to hacker news readers and ask them politely to judge your product/ask for recommendations about pricing and business model.
zackola··on Ask HN: How do you deal with a boss who is stuck in the past?
Can you give some examples of patterns that show up in your bosses code that you disagree with? Let us judge them too.

How many other developers are on this team with you and your boss? Maybe you can get them to stand up and say something too.

Maybe you can get together with your team and do peer reviews once a week. Try reaching out to your boss about a function/module you have written that you know needs improvement and seek his opinions on what could be done. You have to start thinking of him as a peer who is trying to help create a successful business and not as an antagonist to beautiful code.

Your code might be pretty, but if beautifying code takes the place of bug fixing and adding features needed to sell a product or service, it doesn't matter.

zackola··on Ask HN: Professional Python IDEs?
I'd check out the free version of WingWare first. It feels not so polished in terms of the GUI, but the features/integration with Python in general is pretty sweet. What are your complaints/missing features of some of the other things you've used?
zackola··on Microsoft is Dead
Out of morbid curiosity, what would you say comprehensively defines MS, or future MS strategies? They seem to constantly try to branch out into established markets by throwing tons of money at every area they can think of without actually doing innovative work in any area. It seems they are generally left in the dust trying to catch up to established markets because they lack the innovation to develop and market anything new and interesting on their own.
zackola··on Microsoft is Dead
Old news! Death to Microsoft! The more interesting question is do they really not realize they suck? When you have Google as the #1 search engine being used within Microsoft and iPods as the #1 music players being used by Microsoft employees, I find it very hard to believe they don't know they suck.
